Fall Jacket Trends 2026: What’s Worth Buying—and What Should You Skip?

September 10, 2026 By: Nada Manleycomment

A new season brings a new crop of trends, but I’ve never believed that a trend report should become your shopping list.

The better question isn’t simply, “Is this in style?”

It’s: “Does this deserve space in my closet?”

For Fall 2026, jackets are one of the most interesting categories because we’re seeing everything from very practical everyday layers to exaggerated runway pieces that are much harder to translate into real life.

So I’m putting 13 of the season’s jacket trends into three categories: Buy, Maybe, and Bye-Bye.

My criteria are pretty simple. I want wearability. I want flattering proportions. I want enough versatility to justify the purchase. And unless we’re intentionally buying something fun and fleeting, I want some indication that we’ll still enjoy wearing it next year.

How to Shop This Post:

  • Shop My Picks. They are all linked in list form, and the pictures are also linked.
  • Shop everything in this catalog: https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/306H-SQ4tFKd6h?s=1915222

BUY: Barn and Chore Jackets

Shop these jackets here: https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/306H-SQ4tFKd6h?s=1915222

In Order:

  • Green Jacket: https://stylists.shop/W2v
  • Beige Long Jacket (sold out/similar): https://stylists.shop/W2x
  • Beige Long Jacket: https://stylists.shop/W2t
  • Denim Jacket: https://stylists.shop/W2y
  • Dark Olive Jacket (sold out/different color): https://stylists.shop/W2w
  • Olive Jacket: https://stylists.shop/W2z
  • Olive Jacket: https://stylists.shop/W2A
  • Olive Jacket: https://stylists.shop/W2B
  • Red Jacket: https://on.ltk.com/+apiAdqSCGnpJojsupHIkzQ
  • Navy Jacket (sold out/similar): https://stylists.shop/W2C

This continues to be one of my easiest recommendations.

A barn or chore jacket fills essentially the same role in your wardrobe as a denim jacket: casual, comfortable and easy to throw on. But right now, it feels fresher.

I’m particularly drawn to barn jackets in olive, tobacco, camel, navy and burgundy.

The caution here is proportion. Some versions are extremely boxy or long, which can overwhelm a petite frame or create unnecessary volume on a fuller bust.

And pay attention to where the hem hits. If you don’t want to emphasize the widest part of your hip, don’t put a strong horizontal line there.

The beauty of this trend is that it feels current without feeling disposable.

Verdict: BUY.

BUY: Suede Jackets

  • Camel: https://stylists.shop/W2H
  • Brown: https://stylists.shop/W2F
  • Dark Brown: https://stylists.shop/W2G
  • Coganc Brown: https://stylists.shop/W2I
  • Black Blazer: https://goto.quince.com/vDvZAO
  • Cognac Blazer: https://stylists.shop/W2K
  • Light Blue Suede: https://stylists.shop/W2J
  • Dark Brown Blazer: https://stylists.shop/W2E
  • Long Coat: https://stylists.shop/W2L
  • Knee Length Coat: https://stylists.shop/W2D

Suede doesn’t need a complicated silhouette to be interesting. The texture does the work.

You can wear an incredibly simple outfit, add suede, and suddenly the entire look feels richer and more intentional.

Because suede can also be an investment, I would resist highly detailed trendy versions. Instead, look for straightforward silhouettes—a cropped straight jacket, a simple blazer or another shape that already works for your body and wardrobe.

Then, if you want the 2026 update, consider doing it through color.

This is one of those categories where my usual mantra applies perfectly:

Details date.

Let the beautiful material make the statement.

Verdict: BUY.

BUY: The Refined Leather Bomber

  • Dark Brown: https://stylists.shop/W2M
  • Dark Olive: https://stylists.shop/W2N
  • Medium Brown: https://stylists.shop/W2O
  • Olive: https://stylists.shop/W2S
  • Burgundy: https://stylists.shop/W2R
  • Taupe Suede: https://stylists.shop/W2T
  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W2X
  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W2Y
  • Chocolate: https://stylists.shop/W2Z
  • Olive Suede: https://stylists.shop/W34
  • Brown: https://stylists.shop/W31
  • Brown: https://stylists.shop/W2V
  • Cognac: https://stylists.shop/W2Q
  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W2P

If you’ve been wondering what has taken the place of the moto jacket, this is it.

I’m not declaring moto jackets dead—I still own and love mine—but the softer leather bomber looks much fresher right now.

We’re seeing less hardware, softer leather, more relaxed shapes and beautiful neutrals like brown, oxblood, olive and taupe.

I particularly like the contrast of a leather bomber with feminine pieces such as dresses and skirts. It gives you the attitude we used to get from the moto jacket without feeling overly hard or heavy.

What I would avoid are exaggerated cocoon sleeves, enormous dropped shoulders or heavy elastic hems that create excessive volume.

Keep the shape relatively refined and this can have real staying power.

Verdict: BUY.

MAYBE: Peplum Jackets

  • Black Leather: https://stylists.shop/W35
  • Blue: https://stylists.shop/W3B
  • Black Leather: https://stylists.shop/W3C
  • Ivory: https://stylists.shop/W3D
  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W3F
  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W3G
  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W3E
  • Givenchy: https://stylists.shop/W3H
  • Dior: https://stylists.shop/W3J

A great peplum can perform a little wardrobe magic.

It can define the waist while gently minimizing the tummy.

Unfortunately, a bad peplum can do exactly the opposite.

If the flare starts too high, sticks out too dramatically or turns into a giant ruffle, it can shorten the torso and add volume precisely where many women don’t want it.

Look for a controlled, architectural peplum rather than a theatrical one.

This is absolutely a trend worth trying—but don’t settle for the wrong fit just because the style is having a moment.

Verdict: MAYBE.

MAYBE: Military Jackets

  • Black Blazer: https://stylists.shop/W3O
  • Tweed Jacket: https://stylists.shop/W3P
  • Mustard Jacket: https://on.ltk.com/+BHiDk9t3KqozJaAXkRhf1g
  • Olive Jacket: https://stylists.shop/W3Q
  • Gold Braid Jacket: https://stylists.shop/W3R
  • Army Green Jacket: https://stylists.shop/W3S
  • Black Jacket (sold out/similar): https://stylists.shop/W3T

I love a military jacket.

Strong shoulders, stand collars, brass buttons, piping and regimental details can transform jeans and a basic top into an actual outfit.

The problem comes when all of those things appear on one jacket.

You want a military reference—not the entire marching band.

Choose a contemporary version with one or two strong military details. The simpler the jacket, the more modern it will feel and the longer you’ll probably wear it.

Verdict: MAYBE—but a strong one for the right personal style.

MAYBE: Frog-Closure Jackets

  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W3V
  • White: https://stylists.shop/W3X
  • Gray: https://stylists.shop/W3W
  • White: https://stylists.shop/W3U

This is one of the more surprising trends of the season.

Frog closures themselves can be incredibly graphic and interesting, but this style has also appeared for years in clothing marketed specifically toward mature women. That means choosing a version that feels fresh and modern is particularly important.

The closure should be the design feature.

Put beautiful, high-quality frog closures on an otherwise streamlined jacket and the effect can be sophisticated and current. Add embellishment, unusual fabrics, complicated shapes and multiple decorative elements, and the look can become dated very quickly.

Verdict: MAYBE.

MAYBE: Colorful Technical Windbreakers

  • Red https://stylists.shop/W3Z
  • Burgundy https://stylists.shop/W3Y
  • Berry https://stylists.shop/W3Z
  • Red https://stylists.shop/W41
  • Yellow https://stylists.shop/W42

Fashion and function don’t always get along, but this season they’re finding some common ground.

Bright technical windbreakers are being treated as fashion pieces rather than purely practical outerwear.

I particularly like these for travel, walking, sporting events and women whose wardrobes lean casual or athleisure.

But that’s also the limitation.

If you rarely wear sporty clothes, this isn’t necessarily going to integrate easily into your wardrobe.

Buy for your lifestyle first and the trend second.

Verdict: MAYBE.

BYE-BYE: Plastic, PVC and High-Shine Coated Jackets

No to these.

Choose these instead.

  • Pink: https://stylists.shop/W43
  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W44
  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W46
  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W45

Some things make far more sense on a runway than they do standing in your closet.

Clear plastic and heavily coated PVC jackets fall into that category for me.

They’re dramatic. They photograph well. They catch the light.

They’re also frequently stiff, hot, crinkly, uncomfortable and extraordinarily difficult to make look effortless in everyday life.

I’m not talking about a practical raincoat or beautiful patent leather. Those can absolutely earn a place in a wardrobe.

I’m talking about the obvious plastic-jacket micro trend.

The jacket becomes the entire outfit—and everyone remembers it every time you wear it.

Verdict: BYE-BYE.

BYE-BYE: Extremely Oversized Blazers

Try this instead.

  • Black Blazer: https://stylists.shop/W48

I’m thrilled that clothes that actually fit are fashionable again.

Relaxed tailoring can still be beautiful. A slightly slouchy blazer can absolutely work.

But there’s relaxed—and then there’s a blazer with shoulders hanging well beyond your body, sleeves swallowing your hands and enough fabric to dress another person.

Extreme proportions are immediately identifiable with a particular fashion moment, which also means they tend to date quickly.

If you love a relaxed blazer, wear one.

But if the blazer is wearing you?

Verdict: BYE-BYE.

BUY: Blouson Jackets

  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W49
  • Cream: https://stylists.shop/W4a
  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W4c
  • Camel: https://stylists.shop/W4d
  • Cream: https://on.ltk.com/+2tvywMP6AaDvYz0Ri4tqBQ
  • Beige: https://stylists.shop/W4h
  • Pink: https://stylists.shop/W4g

The blouson is something of the bomber jacket’s lighter, more refined cousin.

It generally has some soft volume through the body along with definition at the hem. That combination can create shape at the waist while also gently camouflaging the tummy.

And unlike some of the more specific trends on this list, it can work with trousers, jeans, skirts and dresses.

The key word is soft volume.

You don’t need puffiness or exaggerated proportions.

Verdict: BUY.

BUY: Funnel-Neck Jackets

  • Brown: https://stylists.shop/W4k
  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W4o
  • Brown: https://stylists.shop/W4p
  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W4r
  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W4q
  • Red: https://stylists.shop/W4n
  • Beige: https://stylists.shop/W4l
  • Black: https://stylists.shop/W4j
  • Camel: https://stylists.shop/W4s
  • Brown: https://stylists.shop/W4i
  • Navy: https://stylists.shop/W4s

This may be one of my favorite updates of the season.

A higher funnel neck can take an otherwise simple jacket and instantly make it feel more directional and modern.

I also like the longevity of this trend. In many cases, if you’re tired of wearing the funnel zipped up, you simply open the jacket and it becomes a much more classic silhouette again.

You’ll find funnel necks in leather, canvas, technical fabrics and lightweight materials, so this isn’t limited to one particular wardrobe style.

If you have a shorter neck or fuller bust, look for a softer, less bulky funnel rather than something extremely tall and rigid.

It’s directional without being difficult.

Verdict: BUY.

MAYBE: Capes and Wraps

  • Black Cape: https://stylists.shop/W4x
  • Ruffly Cape: https://stylists.shop/W4y
  • Black Leather Cape: https://stylists.shop/W4w
  • Beige Cape: https://stylists.shop/W4z
  • Black Leather Cape (sold out/similar: https://stylists.shop/W4v
  • Cognac Wrap: https://stylists.shop/W4A
  • Camel Wrap: https://stylists.shop/W4C
  • Black Wrap: https://stylists.shop/W4E
  • Cobalt Wrap: https://stylists.shop/W4F
  • Fringed Brown Wrap: https://stylists.shop/W4I

I have tried to convince women to wear capes for years, so you know this one is difficult for me.

A cape brings instant drama to even the simplest outfit.

But practicality matters.

Some capes restrict arm movement. Shoulder bags can become awkward. Excessive fabric can overwhelm a petite frame. And an unsecured wrap can become something you spend the entire day adjusting.

For petites especially, less length and less volume will generally make this trend easier to wear.

I still love them. I simply wouldn’t recommend that a cape become your only fall layering option.

Verdict: MAYBE.

MAYBE: Satin Jackets

  • Navy https://stylists.shop/W4J
  • White https://stylists.shop/W4M
  • Black https://stylists.shop/W4N
  • Pink https://stylists.shop/W4K
  • Navy (sold out/avail in brown) https://stylists.shop/W4P
  • Cream https://stylists.shop/W4L

For evening, I think this is one of the most useful trends on the list.

A satin jacket can provide arm coverage without resorting to one of those flimsy chiffon layers that seem to appear endlessly in occasionwear marketed toward women over 50.

A cropped satin jacket, satin blazer or even a modern satin shrug can finish an evening outfit rather than simply cover it.

And for artistic or romantic personal styles, embroidery can be beautiful.

The quality of the fabric matters enormously. Cheap, excessively shiny satin can look inexpensive very quickly, and shapeless unlined versions can start looking like sleepwear.

It’s also lifestyle specific. If you rarely dress for evening events, you simply may not need one.

Verdict: MAYBE.

The Final Fall 2026 Jacket List

But my list shouldn’t automatically become yours.

Personal style begins when we stop asking only, “Is this fashionable?” and start asking better questions:

Does this work for my body?
Does it work with my wardrobe?
Does it work for my lifestyle?
Do I genuinely love it?

Because the smartest fall wardrobe isn’t the one with the most trends.

It’s the one where every piece earns its place.
