Fall Color Trends 2026: The Colors That Will Define the New Season

August 10, 2026 By: Nada Manley4 Comments

Fall color usually follows a familiar script.

Burgundy. Brown. Olive. Camel. Maybe a little rust.

Those colors are certainly here for Fall/Winter 2026–2027—but they are only half the story.

This season, some of our most traditional autumnal neutrals are sharing the spotlight with fuchsia, royal purple, chartreuse, aquatic green, clear red and brilliant maritime blue.

It sounds almost contradictory.

And that is exactly the point.

The Biggest Fall Color Trend Is Contrast

The defining color story of Fall 2026 isn’t one individual shade. It’s the contrast between two very different approaches to color.

On one side, we have a sophisticated, earthy palette:

  • Chocolate
  • Cinnamon
  • Terracotta
  • Red mahogany
  • Burgundy
  • Olive
  • Camel
  • Cream
  • Gray
  • Deep ocean blue

On the other side, we have unapologetic color:

  • Royal purple
  • Fuchsia
  • Chartreuse
  • Aquatic green
  • Maritime blue
  • Clear red

That makes Fall 2026 an unusually flexible season.

If you love a quiet, elegant wardrobe, there are beautiful new neutrals to explore.

If you love color, you have plenty of it.

And if—like me—you want both, this season makes mixing the two feel especially current.

1. Clay, Terracotta and Cinnamon

Warm medium browns are becoming increasingly important.

Look for names such as cinnamon, burnt sienna, rust, terracotta, copper brown, warm cognac, brick, Muted Clay and Arabian Spice.

What makes these shades useful is their depth. They’re richer and more interesting than beige but not nearly as dark as chocolate or espresso.

They also transition beautifully.

Right now, you could wear cognac sandals with white or denim, carry a warm brown bag, or pair a terracotta top with a lighter summer bottom.

Later, that same palette can become much richer: chocolate trousers with a clay blouse, a cinnamon sweater, or an entire tonal outfit made up of multiple shades of brown.

You don’t necessarily need different colors for late summer and fall.

Sometimes you simply need to style the same color differently.

2. Burgundy, Oxblood and Red Mahogany

If there is one color family I expect to be especially useful this season, it is this one.

Burgundy has been building for several seasons, but it increasingly behaves like a true neutral.

Think of it alongside navy, black, charcoal and chocolate.

Then add some of the richer variations we’re seeing: oxblood, cordovan, burnt cherry, merlot, deep wine and especially red mahogany.

Red mahogany sits somewhere between brown, burgundy and deep red, making it remarkably versatile.

This family is also a wonderful option if traditional brown isn’t flattering on you—or you simply don’t like wearing it.

Try:

  • Burgundy trousers + pale blue
  • Burgundy + ivory
  • Burgundy shoes + denim
  • Red mahogany belt + neutral dress
  • Burgundy jacket + pink
  • Burgundy + clear red

If you already own burgundy, this is one trend you may not need to shop for at all.

3. Brown Gets Richer

Brown continues to expand.

Chocolate and espresso are still important, but we’re also seeing toffee, cinnamon, cognac, camel, ginger and red-brown tones.

One of the most modern ways to wear brown is tonally rather than relying on one perfectly matching shade.

Try cream, camel, cognac and chocolate together.

Or rust, cinnamon and mahogany.

Or perhaps my favorite: pink, burgundy and chocolate.

Even a simple switch from cognac accessories to deep chocolate can give denim a distinctly fall feeling.

4. Olive Becomes Polished

Olive isn’t disappearing. It’s getting dressed up.

Instead of thinking only about army jackets and utilitarian pieces, picture olive trousers, satin, tailoring, handbags and sophisticated shoes.

Olive can function almost like a neutral.

It works beautifully with cream, camel, chocolate and burgundy—but also with less obvious partners such as soft pink, purple, teal and maritime blue.

An olive pair of pants is one of those wardrobe expanders that suddenly gives you something to wear with tops that never seemed to work with anything else.

5. Turquoise & Bright Blue for Fall

One of the season’s more unexpected stories is aquatic blue-green.

You’ll see versions described as Neptune green, muted turquoise, sea green, sea glass, dusty teal, patina and verdigris.

This is an excellent bridge color because it changes personality depending on what you put with it.

With white, it can still look summery.

With denim or camel, it becomes transitional.

With chocolate or burgundy, it suddenly feels autumnal.

And with navy, charcoal or deep purple, it can feel thoroughly wintry.

This is exactly the kind of color that can make an existing neutral wardrobe look new.

6. Chartreuse Continues

Chartreuse isn’t going anywhere yet.

Acid green, yellow-green, pea green, wasabi and other vivid yellow-based greens remain directional for Fall 2026.

The secret is deciding how much chartreuse you actually want.

For a small dose:

  • Shoes
  • Earrings
  • Bag
  • Scarf
  • Print

For a medium dose:

  • Blouse
  • Cardigan
  • Vest
  • Lightweight sweater

For a major commitment:

  • Dress
  • Coat
  • Suit

And if you’re wondering what on earth to wear with it, start with chocolate, charcoal, navy, olive, burgundy, camel or black.

A bold color gets much easier when the rest of the outfit grounds it.

7. Purple Is Back in a Big Way

Royal purple and saturated violet are among the strongest new color stories for Fall 2026.

We’re seeing purple in dresses, coats, tailoring, leather, knitwear, handbags, shoes and even monochromatic looks.

But you don’t have to wear bright royal purple.

Plum, aubergine, grape, amethyst, deep orchid and softer violet variations give you plenty of choices.

If you haven’t worn purple in years, this may be the season to take another look.

8. Two Very Different Pinks

Fall pink is going in two opposite directions.

First, there is Foxglove: a muted, dusty mauve-pink that may remind some of us very strongly of the 1980s.

Think dusty rose, antique pink, rose taupe and muted berry.

Then there’s the exact opposite: vivid fuchsia.

Fuchsia is being treated as a legitimate cold-weather color and paired with much richer shades such as burgundy, chocolate, olive, navy, purple and red.

If fuchsia overwhelms you, raspberry can give you much of the same energy in a slightly more wearable form.

9. Red Is Becoming a Foundation Color

Red isn’t being relegated to the shoe, handbag or lipstick this season.

Designers are using it in much larger doses.

We’re seeing red with baby blue, butter yellow, brown, green, purple, denim, black and gray.

We’re also seeing different reds worn together.

Tomato, cherry, burgundy, mahogany, rust and pink-red do not have to match perfectly.

In fact, the slight clash between them is part of what makes a tonal red outfit look modern.

10. Blue Goes From Bright to Deep

At the brighter end, maritime blue brings an almost denim-like versatility to the season.

At the darker end is Poseidon, a saturated deep ocean blue that functions much like navy.

Both are useful because blue plays so well with the season’s warm browns, burgundies and brighter accent colors.

The Fall 2026 Color Combinations to Try

This is where the season gets especially interesting.

Rather than pairing every trend color with black, try some of the combinations we’re seeing emerge:

Purple + Red

Strong, dramatic and surprisingly sophisticated.

If that’s too intense, use burgundy, plum, aubergine or red mahogany to soften the contrast.

Red + Brown

One of the easiest combinations of the season.

Try cherry with chocolate, tomato red with camel or burgundy with cognac.

Chartreuse + Dark Neutrals

Chocolate, charcoal, navy and olive can make vivid chartreuse infinitely easier to wear.

Pink + Red + Burgundy

Play with different depths instead of matching intensities.

A pale pink with oxblood, for example, is much easier to wear than two equally bright colors.

Blue + Warm Brown

Denim and cognac have always worked.

Now expand that formula: maritime blue with camel, pale blue with chocolate, cobalt with cinnamon or Poseidon with toffee.

Green + Purple

It sounds theatrical but can look remarkably sophisticated.

Olive and plum is a particularly wearable place to begin.

Don’t Forget Accessories

You never have to adopt a new color in a head-to-toe outfit.

Some of the season’s most effective color updates are accessories.

A burgundy handbag can replace a black or brown one.

A colored shoe can completely change a simple outfit.

Red accessories work with nearly everything.

Purple and green are showing up in bags, shoes, scarves and jewelry.

And colored tights—burgundy, olive, red, purple, charcoal or navy—can add a strong fashion element without requiring a major purchase.

One of my favorite strategies is using a scarf, belt or piece of jewelry as a color bridge.

If a scarf contains three colors already represented in your wardrobe, chances are it will connect pieces in ways you hadn’t considered.

How to Wear Fall Colors While It’s Still Hot

You don’t have to wait for boots and coats to make your wardrobe feel like fall.

Change the color without changing the fabric.

Wear linen in terracotta.

Try a cognac sandal instead of a lighter neutral.

Add a burgundy handbag to a summer dress.

Wear olive trousers with an ivory top.

The fabric and silhouette can remain completely appropriate for warm weather while the color starts moving your wardrobe toward the next season.

Before You Shop, Shop Your Closet

This may be the most important part.

Once you know the trends, don’t immediately go shopping.

Look through your wardrobe.

Pull out anything you already own in burgundy, red, olive, chocolate, purple, pink, blue or one of the other colors we’re seeing.

Then start experimenting with combinations you haven’t tried before.

Maybe that old burgundy jacket suddenly works with your pink blouse.

Maybe your olive pants look new with purple.

Maybe your chocolate bag is exactly what your red dress needed.

Trends are most useful when they help us see what we already own differently.

Fall 2026 gives us an enormous amount of freedom with color.

You can be subtle.

You can be bold.

You can stay entirely neutral.

You can clash colors intentionally.

You can wear a trend color only in your shoes.

And not every color needs to be flattering next to your face. If you love a shade that isn’t one of your best colors, wear it in pants, a skirt, shoes, a bag or another accessory.

The goal isn’t to collect every color on the trend list.

It’s to notice the ones that make you excited to get dressed again—and find a way to make those colors work for you.

Thanks for the turquoise – brown idea. I was just looking at my mint denim jacket today thinking its season is ending, but this sounds like a great way to extend my time wearing it.
