14 Fall 2026 Accessory Trends That Can Transform Your Wardrobe

August 31, 2026 By: Nada Manleycomment

You do not necessarily need a closet full of new clothes to make your wardrobe feel current for fall. Often, one well-chosen accessory can make a bigger difference.

A new blouse may give you one or two new outfits. A beautiful bag, belt, scarf, or pair of earrings can change the way dozens of existing outfits look. That makes accessories one of the smartest places to begin when you want a seasonal update—especially if your size is changing, your wardrobe is already well established, or you simply do not want to replace everything you own.

The fall 2026 runways offered two seemingly opposite ideas. On one side, we saw polished, ladylike structure and familiar classic shapes. On the other, we saw softness, exaggeration, texture, color, and expressive maximalism.

That contrast gives us plenty of options. You can choose the trends that reflect your personal style rather than trying to wear all of them.

Bag Height Guide

HeightSuggested Everyday Bag Width
Under 5’4″10″–12″
5’4″–5’7″12″–15″
5’8″+14″–18″+

Remember: Width Isn’t the Whole Story

A 14-inch flat tote and a 14-inch wide, 10-inch tall, 6-inch deep structured bag have very different visual weight.

The more height, depth, structure, hardware, and embellishment a bag has, the larger it will appear.

So when you’re between sizes, consider the bag’s overall visual scale—not just its listed width.

Strap Length Matters Too

Where the bag hits your body affects your proportions.

  • Petite: Avoid an excessively long crossbody that lands near the lower hip or upper thigh. Shortening the strap usually creates better proportion.
  • Medium height: Most standard strap drops work well, but adjust according to torso length.
  • Tall: Look for sufficient strap length so shoulder and crossbody bags don’t sit awkwardly high.

Simple rule: The shorter you are, the more important it becomes to control both the size of the bag and how low it hangs.

1. Structured Ladylike Bags

Structured handbags are back in the spotlight, particularly top-handle, flap, and doctor-style bags. These are not overly stiff or stuffy versions of the ladylike handbag. The newest styles have defined, architectural shapes combined with interesting proportions, rich leather, beautiful color, or modern details.

Look for a medium or slightly smaller scale, short handles, minimal but distinctive hardware, and an optional shoulder strap. A classic bag shape in an unexpected color or finish can feel both timeless and current.

My Picks

  • Vince: https://stylists.shop/V51
  • Dolce & Gabbana: https://stylists.shop/V52
  • Teddy Blake: https://stylists.shop/V54
JW PEI Thea Bag $99
Mini Sabrina Leather Top Handle Bag Vince $298
Medium Sicily Leather Top Handle Bag Dolce&Gabbana $1,895
Teddy Blake Dana Croco 11″ Black&Red $495 Use Code TBNada30

2. Soft, Slouchy Bags

At the opposite end of the handbag spectrum is the soft, collapsing bag. Slouchy shoulder bags and hobos have a relaxed quality, but the best versions still look luxurious.

Supple leather, suede, restrained hardware, and softly folded shapes define the look. Many are oversized, although your version of oversized should be relative to your frame. A petite woman may need a much smaller bag to achieve the same relaxed effect without being overwhelmed.

My Picks

  • Hammitt: https://stylists.shop/V5f
  • Mansur Gavriel: https://stylists.shop/V5d
  • Anthropologie: https://stylists.shop/V5b
  • Strathberry: https://stylists.shop/V58

3. Richly Textured Bags

Suede, croc embossing, woven leather, pony hair, shearling, and faux fur give fall bags depth and interest. Texture can also make a relatively affordable bag look richer and more luxurious.

Some textures, including suede, croc embossing, and woven leather, have lasting appeal. Fur and shearling bags make a stronger seasonal statement. Choose the degree of trendiness that suits your wardrobe and how long you want to wear the piece.

My Picks

  • Dolce Vita https://stylists.shop/V5h
  • Vince https://stylists.shop/V5j
  • Chloe https://stylists.shop/V5m

4. Embellished Bags

This season’s embellished bags resemble wearable jewelry. Beading, embroidery, crystals, fringe, decorative hardware, and artistic surface treatments turn the handbag into a focal point.

These bags are no longer limited to formal evening outfits. They appeared with everyday clothing on the runways, bringing contrast and personality to otherwise simple looks. An embellished bag can be especially useful if your wardrobe contains plenty of clean, neutral basics that need more character.

My Picks:

  • Nina: https://stylists.shop/V5o
  • Alexander Wang: https://stylists.shop/V5q
  • Erdem: https://stylists.shop/V5s

5. The Return of the Clutch

Clutches are becoming daytime accessories again. Along with traditional evening versions, we are seeing larger leather clutches, soft fold-over shapes, pouches, textured finishes, and relaxed bags designed to be tucked under the arm.

Carrying a clutch makes an outfit look deliberate because it suggests that the bag was chosen for style rather than maximum storage. For practicality, look for one with a discreet wrist strap or removable crossbody strap.

My Picks:

  • Anthropologie: https://stylists.shop/V5y
  • Staud: https://stylists.shop/V5w
  • Stella McCartney: https://stylists.shop/V5x

6. Statement Belts

Fall’s belts are not meant to disappear quietly into belt loops. Decorative buckles, Western references, sculptural plaques, tassels, cords, braided leather, and wider obi-style designs make the belt a central part of the outfit.

Wear one over a dress, blazer, sweater, coat, or other layer. A beautiful belt can define the waist, change the proportions of an outfit, and take the place of jewelry.

My Picks:

  • Gap: https://stylists.shop/V5F
  • Retrofete: https://stylists.shop/V5H
  • B-Low The Belt: https://stylists.shop/V5E
  • Le Sundial: https://stylists.shop/V5K
  • Valentino: https://stylists.shop/V5C

7. Reinvented Pearls

Classic pearls will always be beautiful, but fall’s pearls are less predictable. Oversized, irregular, organic, and baroque shapes make them feel more expressive. Long strands, pearl-and-chain combinations, and unexpected placements also bring a contemporary quality to this traditional material.

If you already own classic pearls, try wearing them with denim, chunky knits, modern tailoring, or mixed chains. The contrast keeps them elegant without making them feel overly formal.

My Picks:

  • Pearl Source: https://stylists.shop/V5Q
  • St. Moran: https://stylists.shop/V5V
  • Mignonne Gavigan: https://stylists.shop/V5W
  • Gorjana: https://stylists.shop/V5S

8. Maximalist and Charm Jewelry

Delicate jewelry is not disappearing, but fall 2026 gives us permission to make a stronger statement. Layered necklaces, charms, pendants, mixed materials, oversized stones, and sculptural pieces bring individuality to simple clothes.

You do not need to pile on every accessory at once. One striking necklace worn with an uncomplicated sweater, shirt, or dress may be enough to transform the entire outfit.

My Picks:

  • Anthropologie: https://stylists.shop/V61
  • Bimba Y Lola: https://stylists.shop/V69
  • Mignonne Gavigan: https://stylists.shop/V62
  • Oscar de la Renta: https://stylists.shop/V60

9. Statement Earrings

Statement earrings remain one of the easiest ways to bring attention, color, and light toward the face. This season’s versions include sculptural metal, oversized drops, irregular pearls, flowers, birds, gemstones, tassels, resin, and fabric.

“Statement” does not always have to mean enormous. An earring can be relatively small but still distinctive because of its shape, material, or movement.

My Picks:

  • Natasha: https://stylists.shop/V6h
  • Chan Luu: https://stylists.shop/V6f
  • Mignonne Gavigan: https://stylists.shop/V6g
  • Saint Laurent: https://stylists.shop/V6d

10. Brooches and Dimensional Adornments

Brooches continue to grow larger, more dimensional, and less formal. Oversized flowers, feathers, textured metal, beading, and fabric embellishments make them feel more like removable sculptures than traditional jewelry.

Wear them on a lapel, at the shoulder, on a scarf, at the waist of a dress, on a belt, or even on a handbag. You can also cluster several smaller brooches together. This may be one of the easiest trends to recreate using something you already own.

My Picks:

  • Mignonne Gavigan: https://stylists.shop/V6i
  • Helena Simon: https://stylists.shop/V6j
  • Oscar de la Renta: https://stylists.shop/V6k

11. Dramatic Scarves

Scarves are becoming more than finishing touches. Oversized versions are worn as wraps, draped over one shoulder, tucked into belts, or wrapped closely around the body. Silk scarves appear against chunky fall textures, while long knitted scarves bring color and movement.

The key is to make the scarf feel intentional. Let it become a significant part of the silhouette or color story rather than adding it as an afterthought.

My Picks:

  • Hermes: https://stylists.shop/V6o
  • Guest in Residence: https://stylists.shop/V6l
  • Sezane: https://stylists.shop/V6m

12. Colorful Long Gloves

Gloves are both practical and expressive this season, especially in longer lengths and unexpected colors. Red, turquoise, green, purple, and pink appeared as deliberate contrasts to neutral coats and clothing.

You do not have to wear opera gloves with a sleeveless evening dress to participate. Simply replacing an ordinary neutral glove with a rich color can make your everyday winter coat feel new.

My Picks:

  • High Heel Jungle: https://stylists.shop/V6r
  • Handsome: https://stylists.shop/V6t
  • Prada: https://stylists.shop/V6s

13. Statement Hats and Headwear

Fall hats are returning in a meaningful way. Beanies, fedoras, pillbox shapes, sculptural caps, bucket hats, wide brims, turbans, and exaggerated runway creations all appeared for the season.

The goal is not to recreate an old Pinterest outfit with skinny jeans, a tunic, and a floppy felt hat. Look for cleaner, more expressive shapes and style them in a way that feels connected to the rest of your outfit.

My Picks:

  • French Knot: https://stylists.shop/V6v
  • Gigi Burris: https://stylists.shop/V6A
  • Ruslan Baginskiy: https://stylists.shop/V6D
  • Eric Javits: https://stylists.shop/V6B

14. Shield Sunglasses

One of fall’s most surprising trends is the shield sunglass. These oversized, wraparound styles have a sporty, futuristic quality and often feature colored lenses or strong temple details.

They are also practical. Large lenses provide more coverage, which remains useful during fall and winter—particularly around reflective snow. If the most dramatic versions feel overwhelming, look for a more moderate interpretation with a gently wrapped shape.

My Picks:

  • Anthropologie (sold out/alternative): https://stylists.shop/V6I
  • Quay: https://stylists.shop/V6L
  • Bottega Veneta: https://stylists.shop/V6N

Choose the Accessory That Will Work Hardest for You

These 14 trends are not a fall shopping list. They are possibilities.

Start by asking which accessories you actually wear. If you carry a handbag every day, the right bag may update the greatest number of outfits. If you rarely carry one but always wear earrings, jewelry may be the better investment. A scarf, belt, pair of gloves, hat, or sunglasses may be more useful depending on your climate and lifestyle.

Then look through your wardrobe before buying anything. Pearls, brooches, structured handbags, scarves, clutches, and statement belts have all existed before. You may already own exactly the piece you need—along with a new way to wear it.
