The New Rules of Accessorizing: 20 Styling Strategies That Make Your Wardrobe Feel Current

July 23, 2026 By: Nada Manleycomment

It’s not just what you wear. It’s how you wear it.

You do not necessarily need an entirely new wardrobe to make your outfits feel current for fall. Often, a different shoe, belt, bag, scarf, jacket, or piece of jewelry can transform clothes you already own.

The newest styling ideas are also much less concerned with perfect coordination. Instead of matching everything, we are seeing more contrast, creativity, texture, juxtaposition, and personal expression.

Here are 20 styling strategies that can help you transition your wardrobe from summer into fall and make your existing clothes feel new again.

1. Replace Cognac With Chocolate Brown

Cognac has been one of our most dependable neutrals for years, particularly with denim.

We have worn cognac:

  • Belts with jeans
  • Loafers with denim
  • Cognac boots
  • Medium-brown handbags
  • Cognac ballet flats
  • Brown leather jackets

Cognac is not going out of style, but because we have seen this combination for so long, replacing it with a darker neutral can immediately make a denim outfit feel fresher.

Try pairing denim with:

  • Chocolate brown
  • Black
  • Charcoal gray
  • Navy
  • Burgundy

The contrast between denim and a dark neutral looks crisp, polished, and slightly edgier. It also helps move denim out of its lighter spring and summer combinations and into fall and winter.

Burgundy is especially useful here. It is almost a neutral and works beautifully with denim, pale blue, and medium blue.

2. Add One Deliberately “Wrong” Color

Most of us grew up believing that the colors in an outfit had to match.

If we wore pink shoes, we were taught to repeat pink somewhere else. Our belt matched our shoes, our shoes matched our bag, and every color had to coordinate perfectly.

Modern styling is much more interested in the unexpected.

Try adding one color that looks as though it should not be there:

  • A yellow bag with a red dress
  • A turquoise bag with a purple outfit
  • A pale blue accessory with burgundy
  • A red accessory with pink
  • An olive bag with navy
  • Butter yellow with chocolate brown
  • A green accessory with a red outfit

The unexpected color can appear in:

  • A shoe
  • A bag
  • A belt
  • A scarf
  • An earring
  • A necklace
  • A brooch
  • A jacket

The size of the accessory changes the impact. A colorful earring is an easier entry point than a bright jacket. Choose a dose that suits your comfort level and personality.

Red and green can work together without looking like Christmas.

The key is to avoid using equal amounts of primary red and primary green. Instead, try a nuanced shade such as olive, burgundy, oxblood, tomato red, moss, or forest green.

A small olive accessory against a red outfit looks very different from wearing large blocks of bright red and green together.

3. Use a Bridge Color or Bridge Piece

Sometimes two colors almost work together, but your eye is not completely convinced.

This often happens with tonal combinations such as:

  • White and cream
  • White and beige
  • Two shades of beige
  • Two shades of navy
  • Two shades of blue
  • Black pieces in different fabrics
  • Similar neutrals that are not exact matches

These combinations can look sophisticated and modern, but some women worry that they look accidental rather than intentional.

A bridge piece can connect the colors.

Add a Belt

Place a belt between a white shirt and off-white pants. The belt creates a visual break so the two shades no longer appear to be unsuccessfully matching.

Add a Jacket

A jacket covers part of the dividing line between the top and bottom. It helps the colors flow together without requiring them to match.

Add a Scarf Containing Both Colors

A scarf with white and ivory makes a white-and-ivory outfit look completely intentional.

A scarf that includes several of your best wardrobe colors can become one of the most useful accessories you own.

Choose a Piece That Includes Both Shades

Look for:

  • A woven bag with white and ivory
  • A striped shoe containing both colors
  • A scarf that incorporates both shades
  • A jacket with a print that connects them
  • Jewelry that repeats the two tones

Repeat Each Color Elsewhere

You could also wear:

  • An ivory shoe with a white bag
  • A red bag with a pink shoe
  • A navy shoe with a lighter blue scarf

Repeating each color elsewhere in the outfit demonstrates that the combination was a deliberate choice.

Introduce a Completely Different Color

A contrasting belt, jacket, or accessory can separate two similar colors and keep the outfit from looking as though you tried—and failed—to match them.

The purpose of a bridge piece is simple: it makes a styling choice look intentional rather than accidental.

4. Use an Accessory to Supply Your Missing Style Word

Many women do not fit neatly into one personal-style category.

You may not be simply classic, bohemian, preppy, romantic, edgy, or minimalist. Your style is probably a combination of characteristics.

My three style words are:

  • Feminine
  • Creative
  • Bold

When an outfit feels almost right but does not fully feel like you, ask:

Which one of my style words is missing?

An outfit may already feel feminine and creative but not bold. A dramatic jacket, colorful shoe, statement necklace, or oversized earring can supply the missing word.

Accessories that can complete the personal-style message include:

  • Jewelry
  • Shoes
  • Bags
  • Belts
  • Scarves
  • Brooches
  • Hair accessories
  • Jackets

Consider whether the accessory will stay on throughout the day. A bag may supply the boldest element, but the effect disappears when you put the bag down.

A shoe, necklace, jacket, or earring continues doing the styling work after you arrive.

5. Embrace the Return of Maximalism

Maximalism is returning, but it does not have to mean wearing everything at once.

For one woman, maximalism might mean bringing back a necklace she has not worn in several years. For someone else, it might mean combining multiple patterns, textures, colors, and statement pieces.

We are seeing a return to:

  • Statement necklaces
  • Statement earrings
  • Statement necklaces worn with statement earrings
  • Dramatic shoes
  • Oversized jewelry
  • Embellished footwear
  • Statement belts
  • Bold handbags
  • Hats
  • Brooches
  • Scarves
  • Socks
  • Patterned tights
  • Patent leather
  • Fringe
  • Embroidery
  • High-shine fabrics
  • Dramatic silhouettes
  • Peplums
  • Bubble skirts
  • Decorative details

To ease into maximalism, add one strong element:

  • One oversized necklace
  • One dramatic brooch
  • A shiny shoe
  • A fringed bag
  • A bold color
  • An embellished flat
  • A statement belt

The goal is to find your own place on the spectrum between too little and too much.

6. Put a Bow on It

The bow trend is continuing, but these are not necessarily tiny, sweet, or childish bows.

The newest versions feel more grown-up, unexpected, and fashion-forward.

Try a bow:

  • Cinching the waist of a blazer
  • Tied at the neck
  • Attached to a necklace or earring
  • Worn as a small brooch
  • Attached to a handbag
  • Tied at the collar of a menswear-inspired shirt
  • Secured through a belt loop
  • Added to a white button-down
  • Wrapped around a watch
  • Tied around the wrist
  • Worn in the hair
  • Securing a ponytail

A bow becomes more interesting when it is paired with something structured, tailored, simple, or traditionally masculine.

7. Borrow One Accessory From Menswear

Menswear-inspired elements are appearing in otherwise feminine outfits.

Options include:

  • A substantial watch
  • A necktie
  • Loafers
  • A tailored jacket
  • Tweed
  • A structured shirt
  • Traditional menswear fabrics
  • Chunkier accessories

A necktie can even take the place of a scarf. We are seeing ties in interesting colors and prints, styled with feminine clothes rather than traditional businesswear.

This is not for every personal style. If menswear makes you feel as though you are wearing a costume, skip it. The goal is to borrow only the ideas that feel authentic to you.

8. Mix Sporty Pieces With Classic or Dressy Pieces

Instead of wearing sporty items only with other athletic pieces, combine them with tailored or dressy clothes.

Try:

  • Track pants with a blazer
  • A track jacket over a silk slip dress
  • Stirrup leggings with a longer blazer
  • A track jacket with tailored trousers
  • A polished handbag with a sporty outfit
  • Dressy shoes with athletic-inspired clothing
  • A blazer with leggings
  • A structured jacket with sneakers

We have been combining blazers and denim for years. This is the next version of the same principle.

It can also help you wear dressier pieces more frequently. If you retired, changed careers, or now live a more casual lifestyle, you do not need to give up every tailored piece you once loved.

Combine it with something sporty or casual so that it fits your current life.

9. Wear an Evening Accessory During the Day

Evening accessories no longer need to wait for a formal occasion.

Try wearing:

  • Satin pumps with jeans
  • Satin flats with a T-shirt
  • Jeweled shoes with tailored trousers
  • An embellished clutch with a daytime dress
  • Glamorous earrings with a knit outfit
  • A chain-mail bag with denim
  • A fringed evening bag during the day
  • A sparkly shoe with a casual outfit
  • A faux-fur accessory with daytime clothes

This approach allows you to use beautiful pieces that might otherwise sit untouched in your closet.

The tension between a casual outfit and a glamorous accessory is exactly what makes the combination look modern.

10. Add a Tactile Accessory to Make an Outfit Feel Seasonal

Texture is one of the easiest ways to signal a change of season.

In summer, we often wear:

  • Raffia
  • Open-weave knits
  • Jelly accessories
  • Lightweight woven materials
  • Woven leather

As fall approaches, introduce:

  • Fringe
  • Tassels
  • Chain mail
  • Patent leather
  • Animal print
  • Faux fur
  • Tweed
  • Heavier knits
  • Embellished surfaces
  • Heavier woven materials

You do not have to wear heavy fall clothing while the weather is still warm.

A patent shoe, tweed bag, fringed accessory, animal-print belt, or faux-fur handbag can make a lightweight outfit feel fall-ready.

11. Go All In on Fringe

Fringe is appearing on both accessories and clothing.

It adds:

  • Movement
  • Drama
  • Glamour
  • Shape
  • Dimension
  • Texture
  • Visual interest

Because fringe moves and floats over the body, it can also be surprisingly flattering. It helps disguise lumps and bumps without requiring an oversized or shapeless garment.

Look for fringe on:

  • Handbags
  • Skirts
  • Jackets
  • Dresses
  • Scarves
  • Shoes
  • Jewelry
  • Belts

Fringe is not simply decoration. The movement is part of the appeal.

12. Use Animal Print as Punctuation

Animal print works like the finishing punctuation mark on a fall outfit.

It can also serve as a bridge between colors that do not seem to speak the same language.

Important prints for fall include:

  • Leopard
  • Snow leopard
  • Snake
  • Python
  • Zebra and other graphic interpretations

Snow leopard is an especially useful option for women who prefer cooler colors and do not wear traditional warm brown leopard prints.

Try animal print in:

  • A shoe
  • A belt
  • A handbag
  • A scarf
  • A coat
  • A faux-fur jacket
  • A brooch
  • A small accessory

A leopard shoe or coat can improve almost any simple outfit. It functions as a near-neutral while adding pattern, texture, and personality.

13. Wear Pants Either Long or Short

Pants are moving toward more decisive lengths.

We are seeing:

  • Full-length pants
  • Floor-length pants
  • Slightly puddled pants
  • Long shorts
  • Capris
  • Wide culottes or gaucho-style pants

What we are seeing less often is the familiar, ordinary cropped pant that falls somewhere in the middle without looking deliberately cropped or deliberately full length.

A very wide culotte can work because it resembles a flowing midi skirt rather than a conventional cropped pant.

The idea is not that everyone must wear puddled pants or capris. It is that pant lengths look most current when the length appears intentional.

14. Make Every Layer Visible and Removable

Layering is becoming more complex, but every layer should contribute something to the outfit.

For example:

  • A tank under an open button-down
  • A lightweight cardigan over the shirt
  • A jacket over the cardigan
  • A T-shirt under a sleeveless knit
  • A contrasting shirt under a sweater
  • Layers of different lengths
  • Layers with contrasting textures

Each layer should be able to stand on its own. You should be able to remove the jacket or cardigan without discovering that the remaining pieces do not make a complete outfit.

We are also seeing:

  • Different lengths worn together
  • Contrasting textures
  • Pieces that do not appear to match at first
  • A small amount of the bottom layer intentionally revealed
  • Multiple collars, cuffs, and hems contributing to the look

15. Use a Modern Sheer Layer

A sheer layer can cover your arms without looking as though its only purpose is concealment.

Avoid a tight, dated sheer shrug that draws attention to the exact area you are trying to cover.

Instead, look for a sheer piece that adds genuine style:

  • A sheer shirt
  • A sheer jacket
  • A flowing organza layer
  • A sheer printed blouse
  • A loose mesh knit
  • A lightweight transparent overshirt

The piece should feel modern and intentional, with enough ease that it does not cling to the upper arm.

You can also layer:

  • A sweater vest over a T-shirt
  • A sleeveless knit over a shirt
  • A sleeveless dress over a fitted top
  • A lightweight sweater over a short-sleeved layer

The purpose is to create an outfit—not merely cover a body part.

16. Replace the Predictable Denim Jacket

A classic denim jacket is not out of style, but it is no longer your only casual layering option.

Consider replacing it with:

  • A blouson jacket
  • A bomber jacket
  • A workwear jacket
  • A cropped blazer
  • A funnel-neck jacket
  • A lightweight leather jacket
  • A modern cropped denim silhouette
  • A soft, unstructured jacket

If you love denim jackets, choose one with an interesting shape, collar, sleeve, proportion, or wash.

A simple tank dress and denim jacket can look ordinary—or exceptional—depending on the jacket.

17. Change the Shoe Before You Change the Clothes

When you feel ready for fall before the temperature cooperates, change your shoes first.

Replace:

  • A sandal with a loafer
  • A flip-flop with a ballet sneaker
  • A classic ballet flat with a high-vamp flat
  • A lightweight shoe with a pale boot
  • A summer shoe with a moto boot

Moto boots and similar substantial shoes can be worn well before true cold weather arrives. They immediately ground a lightweight dress, skirt, or summer trouser.

This is one of the easiest ways to make an outfit feel seasonal without adding heavy clothing.

18. Use Proportion Contrast

Contrast does not have to come from color, pattern, or decoration.

You can also create interest by mixing proportions:

  • Oversized with fitted
  • Long with short
  • Relaxed with structured
  • Voluminous with streamlined
  • Cropped with high-waisted
  • Wide-leg pants with a more fitted top
  • A long blazer with slim leggings

This is particularly useful for women with classic, minimal, or understated style.

You can create a modern outfit without adding bold colors or statement jewelry simply by making the proportions more dynamic.

19. Make the Collar Part of the Styling

Collars are becoming an important styling element.

Try:

  • Popping the collar of a shirt
  • Turning up the collar of a jacket
  • Wearing a blazer collar raised
  • Leaving a shirt collar outside a sweater
  • Keeping the collar tucked under for a relaxed look
  • Wearing one side of the collar in and one side out
  • Layering two contrasting collars
  • Allowing a long collar to emerge over a jacket
  • Adding a brooch at the collar
  • Tying a scarf, ribbon, or tie around the neck

A collar worn outside a jacket or sweater looks crisper, more intentional, and slightly preppier.

A collar tucked underneath looks softer and more relaxed.

Neither is automatically right or wrong. Choose the effect that suits your outfit.

20. Ground Romantic Summer Pieces With Fall Accessories

Romantic summer clothing can continue into fall.

Instead of packing away every eyelet, lace, embroidered, or flowing piece, ground it with darker, stronger, or more structured elements.

Try:

  • An eyelet dress with a leather belt and boots
  • A lace skirt with a structured blazer
  • A slip dress with a workwear jacket
  • A romantic blouse with dark trousers
  • A white embroidered dress with chocolate-brown accessories
  • A feminine dress with a moto boot
  • A flowing skirt with a substantial bag
  • A delicate blouse with a patent loafer

The contrast between the romantic garment and the grounded accessory keeps the outfit from feeling overly sweet or strictly summery.

Choose the Rules That Support Your Style

You do not need to try every strategy.

Some women will love maximalism, bows, fringe, and unexpected colors. Others will prefer proportion contrast, tonal dressing, textured shoes, or an updated jacket.

Return to your personal style words and ask:

  • Which of these ideas feels like me?
  • Which one fills a gap in my outfit?
  • Which strategy helps me use something I already own?
  • Which trend would make getting dressed more enjoyable?
  • Which ideas do I admire but not want to wear?

The best accessory does not merely finish the outfit. It helps the outfit communicate who you are.
