One of the easiest and most affordable ways to update your wardrobe is with a great top.
A new top can make jeans feel fresher. It can make white pants feel more intentional. It can make your everyday shorts, skirts, and casual bottoms feel more styled without requiring you to rebuild your whole closet.
But that does not mean we need more random tops.
The goal is not to keep buying pretty things that do not work with anything else. The goal is to choose tops that fill a real gap in your wardrobe, work with the bottoms you already own, and help your outfits feel more current, polished, and effortless.
So today, I’m sharing 50 of my favorite summer tops for women over 50. I looked for pieces that checked several important boxes: quality, size range, fit, style, fabric, versatility, and wearability. There are affordable finds, investment pieces, elevated basics, modern classics, statement tops, cotton tops, linen tops, button-downs, tanks, lace tops, and summer sweaters.
This is not specifically a sale roundup, although some of these pieces may be on sale now or may go on sale as we move through the summer sale season. I’ll continue updating the catalog as prices change, especially with the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and other summer sales coming up.
Before we get into the tops, though, I want to share a few filters that will help you shop this list more intentionally.
1. Decide Whether You Need Classics, Updates, or Statements
A strong wardrobe usually has three levels.
The first level is your essentials and modern classics. These are the pieces that give your wardrobe versatility. They are the easy, reliable tops you can wear again and again with different bottoms.
The second level is what I call updates. These are elevated essentials. They are not wild statement pieces, but they are a step above the most basic version. They might have an interesting neckline, a pretty texture, a better sleeve, a little ruching, a beautiful trim, or a more modern shape.
The third level is your modern statements. This is where personality comes in. These tops might have embroidery, lace, color, pattern, texture, or a more memorable silhouette.
When you look at your summer tops, ask yourself: am I missing classics, updates, or statements?
That one question can make shopping so much easier.
2. Broaden Your Horizons
There is nothing wrong with having go-to brands, silhouettes, colors, and formulas. In fact, one of the benefits of getting older is knowing yourself better.
But there is a fine line between having go-tos and being stuck in a style rut.
If you see a color, silhouette, brand, or detail that intrigues you but feels slightly outside your usual comfort zone, it may be worth exploring. Sometimes one new shape or one new color can make you fall in love with your wardrobe again.
3. Choose Breathable Fabrics
For summer, breathable fabrics are not optional for most of us.
Cotton, linen, ramie, gauze, silk, lyocell, Tencel, and breathable blends can make a huge difference in whether you actually reach for a piece. A top can be beautiful, but if it feels sticky, stiff, heavy, or uncomfortable in the heat, it is probably not going to become a favorite.
This has become more and more important to me as I get older. I want pieces that feel easy on the body.
4. Look for Shape Without Stiffness
I have an aversion to stiff clothes. If something feels rigid or uncomfortable, I just do not reach for it.
For summer especially, I love tops that have shape, structure, or a defined silhouette without feeling stiff. That might mean a slightly shaped button-down, a wrap top, a boxy gauze tee, a ruched tee, or a blouse that gives you ease without swallowing you.
The goal is polish without discomfort or an overly boxy look.
5. Pay Attention to Sleeve Lengths and Necklines
Sleeve length and neckline are two of the biggest filters when choosing summer tops.
Some women want more arm coverage. Some want a V-neck. Some prefer a boatneck. Some love a high neck. Some want a sleeve that hits closer to the elbow.
If you like to cover your arms, consider an elbow-length sleeve instead of always defaulting to a three-quarter sleeve. An elbow sleeve can often feel fresher and more modern while still giving coverage.
Know your filters. They will help you avoid buying tops you admire online but never actually wear.
6. Make Sure Your Tops Work With Your Bottoms
This is one of the most important shopping rules.
Before buying a top, picture it with the bottoms you already own. If all of your bottoms are flowy and loose, then a very loose, diaphanous top may not give you the balance you need. If your bottoms are more fitted or streamlined, you may have more room for volume on top.
The top has to work with your real wardrobe, not an imaginary one.

Here are some categories of tops to consider:
Affordable Summer Tops
There are some very pretty affordable options this season.
The first two are from Walmart’s Scoop collection. The off-the-shoulder smocked ruffle cotton top is feminine, summery, and available in a generous size range. It has that pretty, romantic feeling without a high price tag.
The second Scoop option is an airy toile blouse that looks much more expensive than it is. It has the kind of pattern and shape you might expect to see at a higher-end store, but at a very accessible price.
Target also has a strong option from the KBB by Kalana collection: the grandpa cardigan. It has that relaxed, cool-girl feel, but in a lightweight cotton that makes sense for summer. It is a little more expensive for Target, but the look and quality feel elevated.
Old Navy also has a slim button-down shirt that is worth considering. I like that it has some shaping at the waist, so it is not just a big oversized shirt. It gives you the option of wearing it untucked without looking sloppy.
Built-In Bra Tops
OGL has become one of my favorite brands for supportive bra tops.
The blouson band bra top in lyocell is especially good if you want something that feels light, breathable, and a little more forgiving around the middle. It gives you ease without looking shapeless.
The ribbed V-neck bra tank is one of the most flattering tanks I have tried. It has enough support that you do not need to worry about finding the right bra, and the shape is very clean and easy to wear. I love that it comes in multiple colors and gives you that polished tank look without all the undergarment complications.
OGL also has a linen wrap top with a self-tie detail. I love wrap and tie-front styles because they allow you to customize the fit. They can create shape without being tight, and they are especially nice for hot summer days.
Investment Tops
There are also a few true investment pieces in this roundup.
Another Tomorrow has a linen French cuff shirt that is definitely a splurge, but it is the kind of forever piece that can live in your wardrobe for years. It is simple, elevated, beautifully made, and made in a sustainable framework.
Jenni Kayne is another premium brand that does elevated basics beautifully. The Ease Shirt is a polished, high-quality button-down that has that relaxed California feel without looking sloppy. Their Fisherman Sweater is also iconic. It is expensive, but it is the kind of piece people collect because it has such a recognizable elevated casual look.
Jenni Kayne’s best-selling tank is another example of a luxury basic. It is a high-neck cotton tank with a clean, polished shape. It is not inexpensive, but if you want the most elevated version of a simple tank, it is a beautiful option.
Veronica Beard’s Adairis beaded button-down shirt is a true statement investment piece. It has embroidery and special details that make it feel collectible. It is expensive, but it is also the kind of top that can make a very simple outfit look finished.
Nili Lotan also has a beautiful ramie top. Ramie is a wonderful breathable summer fabric, and this piece has a relaxed but premium look. It is another investment piece, but one with a lot of ease and longevity.
Elevated Tees and Tanks
Not every summer top has to be dramatic. Sometimes the most useful pieces are elevated basics.
Boden’s Louisa Slub T-Shirt is a great example. It is still a tee, but the shape, neckline, sleeve, and color options make it feel more polished than an ordinary basic tee.
Boden’s Maddie trim detail vest is another pretty elevated basic. It is a cotton tank with a bit of stretch and a beautiful trim detail that makes it more interesting than a plain tank.
Mango has several great updated tees this season. The asymmetrical ruched T-shirt is a wonderful option if you want a tee with more shape and interest. The draped cotton top is another great choice because it gives you that modern draped effect in 100% cotton. Their super soft V-neck T-shirt is also a strong basic because of the neckline and trim detail.
Ann Taylor’s boatneck tee is a polished option, especially if you want something that works well with flowier bottoms. A slightly sleeker top can help balance wide-leg pants, skirts, and looser summer silhouettes.
Universal Standard’s cotton tank is another excellent option if you want inclusive sizing and good quality. Their size range is one of the best, and the tank itself is a clean, classic cotton piece.
Pact’s organic cotton sleeveless sweater is also a lovely alternative to a basic tank. It has that knit texture that makes it feel more intentional, but it is still breathable and easy to wear.
Shopbop’s Talia tee is another elevated knit option. It looks more like a lightweight sweater than a standard tee, which can instantly make a simple summer outfit feel more refined.
Draped and Wrap Tops
Draped and wrap styles can be very flattering because they create shape without clinging.
Mango’s lyocell printed tie-detail shirt is a good option if you want a longer top with a little tummy coverage. It has a more elevated shape, but it can still be worn casually with shorts or casual pants.
Ann Taylor’s linen wrap-front sleeveless top is another beautiful option. It gives you that shaped wrap effect in a breathable summer fabric, and it comes in a range of colors.
These kinds of tops are especially useful when you want something more flattering than a basic tee but not as formal as a blouse.
Button-Down Shirts
Button-downs are having a big moment, and they are so useful in summer.
They can be worn tucked, untucked, open over a tank, tied at the waist, or even used as a lightweight cover-up. They are also much cooler than many heavier layering pieces.
Banana Republic’s Everyday Shirt is a great classic option because it is not too oversized and not too tight. It is the in-between fit that many women are looking for.
Quince has a cotton poplin split-neck top that gives you the crispness of a cotton shirt with a slightly softer neckline. It is also a great price for 100% cotton.
Eileen Fisher’s double-layered organic cotton gauze band collar shirt is a softer, breezier version of a summer shirt. It is shorter, easy to tuck or leave out, and has that relaxed Eileen Fisher ease.
Everlane has several good button-down options, including the Boxy Oxford and the boxy shirt in washable silk. The washable silk version gives you that relaxed luxury without looking too dressy.
Frank & Eileen is another brand I love for relaxed shirts. You do have to be careful not to go so oversized that the shirt becomes hard to style, but the right Frank & Eileen shirt can be a beautiful long-term wardrobe piece.
Madewell’s Signature Y-Neck Shirt in poplin is another strong option. It comes in several colors and stripes and has an easy, wearable fit.
Shopbop also has a relaxed button-up shirt and the Winslet top, which has a tie-back detail. The tie-back makes it a little trendier, but it can also be loosened and worn more like a regular button-down, which gives it more longevity.
Cotton Gauze and Easy Breezy Tops
Cotton gauze is one of my favorite summer fabrics because it is light, breathable, and forgiving.
Eileen Fisher’s lofty gauze round neck box top is an easy alternative to a T-shirt. It is not clingy, but it is still flattering because of the shorter, boxier shape.
These are the types of tops that make summer dressing easier because they feel casual and comfortable but still more intentional than a basic tee.
Feminine and Lace Tops
If you have a more feminine style, there are several beautiful options in this roundup.
Petite Studio’s Coralline cotton lace top has been one of my favorite pieces in my own wardrobe recently. It is 100% cotton with a cotton lining, and it has that pretty, feminine detail without feeling overly fussy.
White House Black Market has a cotton lace elbow-sleeve shirt that is also worth considering. White House Black Market can be hit or miss, but this is one of the pieces I really like. It has pretty lace detail, arm coverage, and breathable cotton.
J.Crew’s crochet floral tank top is another good answer if you like embroidery or texture but want it to feel elevated. It is classic, pretty, and summery without looking dated.
Statement Blouses
A statement blouse can be one of the easiest ways to elevate summer outfits.
Evereve’s navy textured blouse is an easy summer statement. It has texture, a little arm coverage, and a simple color that makes it wearable.
Sézane’s Solenn knit is another beautiful feminine summer top. It feels like a short-sleeve summer sweater, and it has that soft French-inspired polish Sézane does so well.
Duffield Lane’s Marin top in emerald vine embroidery is a beautiful printed and embroidered statement piece. It does run a little small, so I would size up, but the quality and detail are excellent.
Spartina’s Olena blouse is another pretty statement option. It has a classic block print that will not go out of style quickly, and the cotton-linen-viscose blend gives it a nice drape.
Boden is also excellent for statement tops that still feel wearable. Their linen blouse options and Camille double cloth top both have interest without feeling impractical. Boden does pattern, color, and modern classics very well, and their size range is also one of the best.
Cardigans, Sweaters, and Lightweight Layers
Summer sweaters and cardigans can be incredibly useful, especially if you spend time in air conditioning or want an easy arm-covering layer.
The Target KBB by Kalana grandpa cardigan is a relaxed, modern option.
White House Black Market’s crochet short-sleeve cardigan can be worn buttoned as a sweater or open as a layering piece. It gives arm coverage without looking like you are trying to cover your arms. Because it is cotton with an open weave, it is also more breathable than many other layering options.
Jenni Kayne’s Fisherman Sweater is a more premium option, but it has that beautiful elevated casual look that works well for summer evenings, travel, and transitional weather.
A Note About Price
I included everything from very affordable tops to investment pieces because I am not a price snob in either direction.
A great wardrobe can include a $20 Walmart blouse and a $390 linen shirt. It can include a Target cardigan, a Mango tee, an Eileen Fisher gauze top, and a Veronica Beard statement blouse.
The point is not the price. The point is whether the piece works for your wardrobe, your lifestyle, your body, your budget, and your style goals.
Sometimes the best buy is the affordable piece you wear constantly. Sometimes the best buy is the investment piece you keep for years.
The Bottom Line
The best summer tops for women over 50 are not just pretty. They are breathable, wearable, flattering, modern, and easy to style.
Look for pieces that fill a real gap in your wardrobe. Make sure you have a mix of classics, updates, and statements. Choose fabrics that feel good in the heat. Pay attention to sleeve lengths and necklines. And always ask whether the top works with the bottoms you already own.
A great top can make your whole summer wardrobe feel fresher.
And that is what we want: fewer random pieces, more outfits that work, and a wardrobe that makes getting dressed feel easier.
