Bottoms are often the most problematic part of a summer wardrobe.
A top can be beautiful. Your shoes can be ready. You may even have the perfect bag and accessories. But when the pants feel too heavy, the shorts are too tight, or the skirt clings in all the wrong places, the entire outfit becomes harder than it needs to be.
That is why I created a list of 50 summer bottoms that check different boxes.
Some are polished. Some are extremely casual. Some are feminine. Some are trend-forward. Some are investment pieces, while others are very affordable. I also looked for a meaningful range of sizes, lengths, fabrics, and silhouettes.
The goal is not to convince you that you need 50 new things.
The goal is to help you identify the type of bottom that is missing from your wardrobe—and then recognize a good version when you see it.
Exact products, current prices, and available colors can change quickly, so all of the pieces from the video are numbered and linked in my shopping catalog.

Before You Shop: Five Rules for Better Summer Bottoms
1. Start With the Rise

Low-rise and lower-slung pants are returning, but that does not mean mid-rise and high-rise styles have disappeared.
In fact, mid-rise and high-rise bottoms remain the most practical choice for many women. They tend to provide more support, work well with tucked tops, and create a defined waistline.
A lower-rise style requires a different approach.
Tucking a top tightly into a low-rise pant can make the pants look as though they are falling down. A lower rise generally works better with a top that is left untucked, cropped to the right length, or designed with an interesting hem.
The question is not simply, “Is low rise in style?”
The better questions are:
- Where does this rise sit on my body?
- Does it create the proportion I want?
- Will I tuck my tops into it?
- Does it work with the tops I already own?
If you like to tuck, a mid-rise or high-rise style will usually be easier to wear.
2. Choose Fabrics You Will Actually Wear in the Heat

A pair of pants can be beautiful on a hanger and completely useless during a hot summer.
Look for fabrics that are light, breathable, and comfortable enough for your actual climate and lifestyle.
Strong summer options include:
- Linen
- Cotton
- Cotton gauze
- Chambray
- Lightweight denim
- Poplin
- Soft twill
- Modal
- Lyocell
- Tencel
- Lightweight viscose blends
Natural fibers are wonderful, but the composition is not the only consideration. A thoughtfully chosen blend may wrinkle less, drape better, or feel silkier against the skin.
Also examine the lining.
A breathable linen or cotton skirt loses much of its advantage when it is lined with a heavy, non-breathable fabric. Some of the strongest pieces in this collection use cotton linings underneath linen or cotton exteriors.
3. Look for Ease Without Excess Fabric

Tight shorts are not the most modern option right now, which is good news for both comfort and wearability.
Current shorts generally have a little more room through the leg. Pants are also appearing in relaxed, wide-leg, barrel, and balloon silhouettes.
Relaxed does not have to mean shapeless.
The best versions still have some control through the waistband, hip, or upper leg. They skim the body without clinging, but they do not completely overwhelm it.
Some reliable summer silhouettes include:
- Tailored wide-leg trousers
- Straight or softly flared linen pants
- Relaxed pull-on pants
- A-line midi skirts
- Column skirts
- Soft poplin maxi skirts
- Mid-thigh tailored shorts
- Longer denim shorts
When the bottom is very full, keep at least part of the top more streamlined. A fitted tank, tucked tee, trim knit, or neatly cropped shirt can restore balance.
4. Make Sure the Length Looks Intentional

This is particularly important with cropped pants.
A full-length pant is often the easiest and most current option. An ankle pant can also work beautifully, especially in the summer.
The difficult zone is the length that falls somewhere between an ankle pant and a traditional capri. Depending on the cut, it can look less like a deliberate design choice and more like the pants are accidentally too short.
A successful shorter pant should clearly communicate its intended shape.
Look at:
- Where the hem hits your leg
- Whether the leg is straight, tapered, or wide
- The visual weight of the shoe
- The amount of ankle or lower leg showing
- Whether the proportion looks deliberate
Wide cropped pants require particular care because a wide hem creates a strong horizontal line. The hem needs to land at a flattering point and work with the shoes you plan to wear.
5. Shop With Your Shoes in Mind

The return of bootcut, bootleg, wide-leg, and fluid pants means shoes matter again.
One reason skinny jeans were so easy is that almost any shoe could be worn with them. Wider and longer silhouettes are less forgiving.
Before keeping a pair of pants, try them with the shoes you will actually wear.
That may include:
- Flat sandals
- Low-profile sneakers
- Loafers
- Ballet flats
- Espadrilles
- Wedges
- Heeled sandals
Check both the hem length and the visual balance. A substantial wide-leg pant may overwhelm a very delicate shoe, while a cropped ankle pant can work beautifully with a sleek flat or sandal.
Three Final Checks Before You Buy
Do the Sit Test
Sit down, cross your legs, and move around.
Shorts may rise dramatically. Linen trousers may pull across the hip. A skirt slit may open farther than expected. A waistband that feels comfortable while standing can become restrictive when seated.
Examine the Pockets
Pocket placement can completely change the appearance of a bottom.
Large side pockets may add width. Front slash pockets may gape. Back pockets that sit too low can visually lower the seat.
The issue is not whether pockets are good or bad. It is whether their placement works for your body and the silhouette.
Try the Bottom With at Least Three Tops and Two Shoes
A piece is not versatile simply because it is a neutral color.
Before keeping it, build several real outfits. If it only works with one top and one exact heel height, it may not deserve space in your wardrobe.
The Real Goal
You do not need every silhouette, every trend, or every type of summer bottom.
You need the pieces that support your real life.
For one woman, that might mean two pairs of polished linen trousers and one easy skirt. For another, it may be a comfortable short, lightweight denim, and several feminine midi skirts.
Pay attention to rise, fabric, fit, length, and shoes. Those five decisions will tell you far more than the number on the tag or whether a particular silhouette is currently trending.
The best summer bottom is not simply the one that looks beautiful online.
It is the one that makes your existing tops, shoes, and accessories easier to wear—and makes getting dressed feel effortless.
