What to Wear Under Your Spring and Summer Outfits

May 17, 2026 By: Nada Manleycomment

The outfit everyone sees is only half the story.

The part no one sees — the bra, underwear, shapewear, slip, cami, or smoothing short underneath — can completely change how an outfit looks and feels. The right foundation layer can make a simple tee look polished, a white button-down look smooth, a silk skirt feel wearable, and a summer dress feel easy instead of fussy.

And the wrong foundation? That’s when clothes cling, lines show, straps peek out, waistbands dig in, and an outfit that should feel effortless suddenly becomes annoying.

So today I want to talk about what to wear under your spring and summer outfits, especially the trickier ones: white shirts, V-neck tees, silky fabrics, knit dresses, camis, sundresses, wrap dresses, bodycon dresses, and casual day dresses.

This is not about squeezing yourself into uncomfortable shapewear or trying to “fix” your body. It’s about choosing the right undergarments so your clothes can actually do what you bought them to do.

The Foundation Pieces Every Woman Needs

Before we get into specific outfits, let’s start with the basics. I think every woman needs a small but intentional “foundation wardrobe” — the bras, underwear, and smoothing pieces that work under most of your clothes.

1. An Everyday Seamless Bra

My current favorite in this category is the Underoutfit Comfort Shaping Bra with Adjustable Straps. Shop it and other Underoutfit favorites here: https://shop.underoutfit.com/NADA71120 I am 32C and wear a size Small.

This is your workhorse bra.

It should be smooth enough to disappear under T-shirts, knits, lightweight tops, and silky fabrics. Think of it as the modern version of the T-shirt bra: comfortable, supportive, flattering, and invisible under clothes.

The key is to choose a color close to your actual skin tone. White bras show under white tops. Nude-for-you bras disappear.

Look for:

  • Smooth cups
  • No texture or lace that shows through
  • Comfortable straps
  • A supportive band
  • A shape that lifts without creating bulk

This is the bra you want to be able to reach for most days without thinking.

2. A Plunge Bra

My current favorite in this category is the Underoutfit Perfect Neckline Bra. Shop it and other Underoutfit favorites here: https://shop.underoutfit.com/NADA71120 I am 32C and wear a size Small.

A plunge bra is essential for lower necklines.

This is what you need under V-neck tees, button-down shirts worn slightly open, silk blouses, wrap dresses, and dresses with deeper necklines.

The goal is not to create more cleavage. The goal is to give support without having your bra show.

Look for:

  • A lower center front
  • Smooth construction
  • Enough coverage to avoid spillage
  • A color close to your skin tone
  • Supportive but not bulky cups

If your regular bra limits how you can wear your tops, you probably need a plunge bra.

3. A Strapless or Convertible Bra

I just ordered the Underoutfit No Strings Attached Strapless Bra. Shop it and other Underoutfit favorites here: https://shop.underoutfit.com/NADA71120 I am 32C and wear a size Small.

Spring and summer clothes often mean more open necklines: camis, sundresses, halters, racerbacks, and one-shoulder styles.

That’s where a strapless or convertible bra comes in.

I’ll be honest: convertible bras can be fiddly. Sometimes a true strapless bra is easier. But either way, this is one of those pieces that makes more of your wardrobe wearable.

A good strapless bra should:

  • Stay in place
  • Not slide down
  • Create a smooth line
  • Avoid side bulge
  • Feel comfortable enough that you’ll actually wear it

If your strapless bra makes you avoid half your closet, it’s time to replace it.

What If You Have a Smaller Bust?

If you have a smaller or shallower bust, your biggest issue may not be support. It may be gaping.

That little space at the top of the cup can show through thin knits, fitted tops, and silky fabrics. So look for no-gap construction and cups that sit flush against the body.

Your best bras will likely be:

  • Lightly shaped
  • Smooth
  • Flexible
  • Gap-free
  • Not overly molded or stiff

What If You Have a Fuller Bust?

If you have a fuller bust, support matters.

But real support comes from the band, not the straps. If your straps are digging into your shoulders, the band probably isn’t doing enough work.

Look for bras that:

  • Lift
  • Separate
  • Center the bust
  • Smooth the back
  • Prevent spillage
  • Feel supportive without feeling like armor

Especially after menopause, many women find that their bust size or shape changes, and the bras that worked five years ago may not work anymore.

The Two Types of Underwear You Need

Bras get a lot of attention, but underwear matters just as much.

1. Everyday Smoothing Underwear

This is not heavy shapewear. It’s the comfortable, seamless underwear you can wear every day to create a smooth line under pants, skirts, dresses, and knits.

For many women, a higher-rise style works best because it doesn’t cut across the lower belly.

I have been loving the Underoutfit Smoothing at Waist Brief. Shop it and other Underoutfit favorites here: https://shop.underoutfit.com/NADA71120

Look for:

  • Seamless edges
  • Light smoothing
  • A rise that works with your pants
  • No digging
  • No visible panty lines

This is about smoothing, not compressing.

2. Shapewear

Shapewear comes in different levels: light, medium, and high compression.

Check out the Must Have High Waist Panty (Light Hold), Smooth Couture High Waist Panty (Medium Hold) and Sculpting High Waist Short (High Hold). Shop it and other Underoutfit favorites here: https://shop.underoutfit.com/NADA71120. I am 32C and wear a size Small.

Light compression can be comfortable enough for everyday outfits. Medium compression works well under knit dresses, silk skirts, and fitted pieces. High compression is usually best saved for special events or bodycon outfits.

One important tip: consider sizing up in shapewear.

If shapewear is too tight, it can create bulges where it ends, which defeats the purpose. The goal is smooth and supported, not trapped.

The Extra Foundation Pieces Worth Having

A Shaping Cami

Check out the Underoutfit Shaping Lift Cami, which offers support and smoothing-no bra required. Shop it and other Underoutfit favorites here: https://shop.underoutfit.com/NADA71120 I am 32C and wear a size Small.

A shaping cami is one of the most underrated pieces in a foundation wardrobe.

It works beautifully under silk blouses, thin knits, lightweight sweaters, and anything slightly sheer or clingy. It gives you a smooth layer without needing a full shapewear situation.

Wear it when:

  • A blouse is a little sheer
  • A knit top shows every lump and bump
  • A silky top clings
  • You want an extra layer of modesty
  • You want a smoother line through the torso

Anti-Chafe Shorts

Check out the Underoutfit Cooling Thigh Protectors. Shop it and other Underoutfit favorites here: https://shop.underoutfit.com/NADA71120 I am 32C and wear a size Small.

These are practical, especially in warm weather.

They prevent thigh rubbing, but they also give you coverage under dresses. If you live somewhere windy or wear shorter casual dresses, they can be a lifesaver.

They are especially useful under:

  • Casual day dresses
  • Shorter summer dresses
  • Flowy skirts
  • Travel outfits
  • Lightweight dresses

A Slip

Yes, slips still matter.

Check out my faves here. https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/306H&Sac5O

A slip can prevent show-through, reduce cling, make a dress hang better, and give you a little extra confidence under lightweight fabrics.

They’re especially helpful under:

  • White dresses
  • Light-colored sundresses
  • Thin skirts
  • Silk or satin pieces
  • Dresses that become sheer in sunlight

What to Wear Under 10 Spring and Summer Outfits

Now let’s get specific.

1. V-Neck Tee and Jeans

A V-neck tee and jeans sounds simple, but T-shirts can be surprisingly unforgiving. They show bra seams, texture, color, and underwear lines.

For this outfit, wear:

  • A plunge bra or low-cut seamless bra
  • A nude-for-you color
  • High-waisted smoothing underwear

If your tee is thin or fitted, avoid lace, texture, or white bras. Keep everything smooth and close to your skin tone.

2. White Button-Down Shirt and Classic Pants

A white button-down is classic, but it can also be sheer, especially in lightweight cotton or linen.

Wear:

  • A seamless nude-for-you plunge bra
  • Light everyday shapewear or smoothing underwear
  • Optional cami if the shirt is sheer

The plunge bra matters because you don’t want your bra deciding how many buttons you can leave open. If the shirt looks better slightly unbuttoned, your undergarments should support that.

3. Silk Blouse and Midi Skirt

Silk shows everything.

It clings, catches static, highlights waistbands, and reveals lines. So this is where your foundation layer needs to be intentional.

Wear:

  • A shaping cami under the blouse
  • Seamless shaping underwear or shaping shorts
  • Light to medium compression shapewear
  • Optional slip under the skirt

If the skirt is a silk slip skirt, shaping shorts can be especially helpful because they smooth the hips and back without creating panty lines.

4. Knit Dress

Knit dresses are comfortable and easy, but they can show more than you expect.

Wear:

  • A seamless everyday bra or plunge bra, depending on the neckline
  • Medium compression shapewear
  • Brief-style or short-style shapewear, depending on where you want smoothing

For a casual knit dress, don’t overdo it. You want enough shaping to feel smooth and confident, but not so much that the dress no longer feels easy.

5. Cami and Wide-Leg Pants

Spaghetti straps and camis are very much back, but they usually require a strapless bra.

Wear:

  • A smooth strapless bra
  • Everyday smoothing underwear or light shapewear
  • Nude-for-you bra color, especially under lighter camis

The whole point of a cami is that it feels pretty and effortless. If your bra straps are showing or your strapless bra is slipping, the outfit stops feeling easy.

6. Sundress

A sundress should feel breezy, not stressful.

Wear:

  • A strapless bra if the dress has thin straps
  • A regular seamless bra if the dress is bra-friendly
  • Light smoothing underwear
  • A slip if the fabric is light, sheer, or pale
  • Anti-chafe shorts if the dress is short or flowy

If you live in a hot climate, comfort matters. A good strapless bra can make a sundress feel as easy as it looks.

7. Wrap Dress

Wrap dresses are flattering, but they can be tricky at the bust.

If your bust is fuller, you may feel overexposed. If your bust is smaller, you may deal with gaping. Either way, the right bra matters.

Wear:

  • A plunge bra
  • No-gap construction if needed
  • Medium compression shapewear
  • High-waisted shapewear if the dress is knit or fitted

Ideally, your bra and shapewear should meet or nearly meet so there isn’t a gap where things can spill over or show through.

8. Backless or Bra-Unfriendly Outfit

Some dresses simply don’t work with a traditional bra.

For those, consider:

  • Silicone nipple covers
  • Bust tape
  • Adhesive cups
  • Shaping underwear or shapewear depending on the dress

This is not usually an everyday solution for many women, but it can be perfect for a special occasion dress where a regular bra, plunge bra, and strapless bra all show.

9. Bodycon or Special Occasion Dress

This is when higher compression shapewear makes sense.

Wear:

  • High-compression shapewear
  • A seamless bra that works with the neckline
  • Nude-for-you undergarments
  • A slip or shaping slip if needed

This is also where fit matters most. Shapewear that is too tight can create lines and discomfort. Size up if needed so the result is smooth, not squeezed.

10. Casual Day Dress

This is the easy spring and summer dress you throw on for errands, lunch, travel, or everyday life.

Wear:

  • Your everyday seamless bra or plunge bra
  • Anti-chafe shorts
  • A short slip if the dress is sheer
  • Light smoothing underwear if the dress is more fitted

For a casual dress, I usually want it to be bra-friendly. But anti-chafe shorts can make it even easier because they add comfort, coverage, and confidence.

Final Thoughts

The right undergarments don’t just change how your clothes look. They change how you feel in them.

You don’t need a drawer full of complicated pieces. You need a few smart foundation layers that work with your real wardrobe:

  • A seamless everyday bra
  • A plunge bra
  • A strapless or convertible bra
  • Everyday smoothing underwear
  • Light, medium, and possibly high-compression shapewear
  • A shaping cami
  • Anti-chafe shorts
  • A slip

Once you have those pieces, getting dressed becomes easier. Your clothes hang better. Your outfits feel more polished. And you stop avoiding pieces simply because you don’t know what to wear underneath them.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is comfort, confidence, and clothes that actually work for your real life.
