How to Find Your Best Spring Colors (and Actually Wear Them in Real Life)

April 13, 2026 By: Nada Manley2 Comments

If you’ve ever felt stuck in a neutral rut—or overwhelmed trying to “add more color” without knowing where to start—you’re not alone.

Color is one of the fastest ways to elevate your style… but it’s also where most women get it wrong.

Not because they don’t like color.
But because they’re wearing the wrong colors for their natural coloring.

Today, I’m breaking this down into something simple, practical, and actually usable—so you can build outfits that feel right immediately.

How to Shop This Post:

  • Shop all of the outfits in one place in this catalog. The outfits are categorized by color type. https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/306H-SQ4tFKd6h
  • Outfit pics are linked.
  • Outfit links are listed by color category in their respective sections.

Step 1: Understand Your Color Type (Without Overcomplicating It)

CLEAR
DEEP
LIGHT
WARM
COOL
FRESH
SOFT

Instead of dozens of seasonal categories, we’re working with 7 clear color types:

1. Soft

  • Medium contrast, muted tones
  • Think: dusty blues, sage, soft neutrals
  • Avoid: harsh black/white contrast

2. Clear

  • High contrast, bright, vibrant
  • Think: crisp black & white, bold color
  • Avoid: muted, washed-out tones

3. Deep

  • Darker features, medium–high contrast
  • Think: rich tones (navy, burgundy, deep green)

4. Light

  • Fair hair, light eyes, soft contrast
  • Think: airy pastels, light neutrals

5. Warm

  • Golden undertones
  • Think: browns, warm greens, citrus tones

6. Cool

  • Pink/blue undertones
  • Think: navy, cool pinks, crisp white

7. Fresh (Universal Palette)

  • Medium, balanced, slightly bright
  • Works on almost everyone

This is your starting point—not a restriction.

Step 2: Stop Thinking “More Color” — Start Thinking “Better Color”

Many women think: “I need to wear more color in spring.” But then they lose their way, because they don’t know which colors suit them or how to work color into their wardrobes in a strategic way.

Shifting your wardrobe to your best colors for that season can make a big difference and also be a welcome refresh and update for your spring wardrobe.

I wear more black and burgundy in winter and more navy and hot pink in spring and summer.

Step 3: The Most Important Rule (That Changes Everything)

The color closest to your face matters most.

Black is not the best for a Soft beauty like Jennifer Aniston.
This soft shade of blue is much more flattering.

This is where almost all the impact happens.

So instead of overhauling your entire closet:

  • Keep your black pants
  • Keep your neutral shoes
  • Change your tops, jackets, and dresses first

This is the fastest, cheapest, highest-impact fix.

Step 4: Fix Your Contrast (Not Just Your Color)

It’s not just what colors you wear—it’s how strong the contrast is.

Example:

  • Black pants + white top → manageable
  • Black & white striped top → high contrast (harder to wear)

If your natural coloring is softer, high contrast near your face will feel “off” even if you can’t explain why.

Step 5: Build Your Accessories the Right Way

This is where most wardrobes fall apart.

You don’t need more shoes.
You need the right categories.

Your 5 Essential Accessory Buckets:

  1. Hair-Color Neutral
  1. Matches your hair → matches everything
  2. Opposite Neutral
  1. Light + dark balance
  2. Metallic
  1. Silver, gold, or both
  2. Pop of Color
  1. Your signature shade
  2. Texture or Pattern
  1. Raffia, woven, mesh, animal print

Once these are covered, your outfits start working automatically.

Step 6: Build Outfits Using Repeatable Formulas

There are 8 outfits that I think will check all of the boxes for spring. They include:

  • Printed dress
  • Matching set
  • Lounge set
  • Shorts outfit
  • Jacket outfit

Here are the outfits for each color type.

Step 7: The Real Goal

  • Looking more intentional
  • Feeling more confident

And most importantly:

Knowing why something works—so you can repeat it anytime.

AHh! Thank you! Some websites are updating their affiliate systems and it’s been such a pain. You can get to them all in the catalog here! I apologize! https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/306H-SQ4tFKd6h

Hi Nada, just a heads up that some of the links across the different tonal subtypes might be broken – in particular, I tried the Warm set, the Soft pants, and the Fresh lounge, but none of them worked :( Thanks!
