Your basics are the connectors in your wardrobe.
You can buy beautiful tops, statement pieces, and great shoes—but if your jackets, jeans, pants, and cardigans are dated, the whole outfit will feel off.
A dated basic can drag down an otherwise modern outfit.
That’s why updating basics matters more than buying more trend pieces.
Today we’re breaking down:
- What looks dated
- What is classic
- What feels modern for 2026

FINAL TAKEAWAY
Before buying more statement pieces, ask:
- Are my jackets current?
- Do my jeans work with modern shoes?
- Are my pants creating shape or adding bulk?
- Are my cardigans helping or hurting?
- Are my skirts and shorts the right proportions?
Basics are not boring.
Basics are the reason your wardrobe works.

Brenda Byron says
The dress you have looks absolutely fabulous on you
Wendy says
Nada, Thanks so much for this week’s blogs and videos (and the opportunity to watch the Monday video later). These really helped me to get a clearer sense of how to evaluate my basics. I can see that some are dated, which probably accounts for why I try them on and then put them back. Now I feel a lot more freedom to either get rid of them or archive them. I’m leaning towards getting rid of them!
Many thanks!
Wendy
