As we head into a new year, this is the moment to get honest about what’s taking up precious real estate in your closet. Not everything deserves to come with you into 2026—especially pieces that are dated, unflattering, or quietly sabotaging your outfits.
I use the same framework for editing that I use for shopping:

- Do you love it?
- Does it love you back? (Fit, flattery, color)
- Is it modern?
If an item doesn’t check those boxes, it’s time to let it go.
Below are 26 common wardrobe pieces that should stay behind in 2025, plus guidance on what to replace them with.
1. The “Sad Cardigan”
Mid-length, stretched-out, shapeless cardigans from 5–10 years ago are universally aging.

Replace with:

- Waist-length or high-hip cardigans
- Long duster-style cardigans styled intentionally
2. Low-Rise Bootcut Jeans with Heavy Details
Whiskering, fading, embellished pockets, heavy stitching = instantly dated.

Replace with:

- Mid- to high-rise bootcut or flare jeans
- Clean wash, minimal detailing
3. Capri Pants
Short pants do not equal cooler outfits. They do equal shorter legs and older silhouettes.

Replace with:

- Ankle pants
- Thoughtful crops only if proportionally flattering
4. Long Printed Tunics
Especially floral, cold-shoulder, or heavily embellished tunics marketed only to “over-50” brands.

Replace with:

- Slightly longer sweaters or button-downs
- Clean, simple modern tunics or structured asymmetrical styles
5. Waterfall Cardigans

They haven’t been current for years—and show no signs of returning.
Action: Purge, don’t archive.
6. Chunky Statement Necklaces (2012–2017 Era)
Bubble necklaces and crystal florals had their moment.

Exception:
Archive one truly special piece if you love it.
7. Cold-Shoulder Tops

Still sold, still bad. Not modern, not flattering. Try more modern versions like these.

8. Cheap Printed Polyester Blouses
Shapeless chiffon + unfortunate prints = instant downgrade.

Upgrade to:

- Elevated blouses with structure
- High-quality statement pieces, not novelty prints
9. Raglan Sleeve / “Baseball” Tees

Unflattering, confusing, and outdated.
10. Elastic-Waist Pull-On Pants
If you can tell they’re pull-on, they’re not doing you any favors.

Look for:
- Flat-front pull-ons that read as tailored pants
11. Long Boxy Knit Vests

Especially crochet or hole-heavy styles worn “for art class.”
12. Blazers with Sewn-Up ¾ Sleeves
A very specific 2015–2017 trend.

Replace with:
- Full-length sleeves
- Simple, modern tailoring
13. Orthopedic-Looking Shoes

Comfort matters—but utilitarian doesn’t have to mean ugly.
Strategy: Buy fewer, better shoes that are both supportive and modern.

14. Scrunched Ballet Flats with Elastic Binding
Details date. These are dated.

Replace with:
- Simple, classic ballet flats with clean lines.

15. Sequin or Iridescent Trim on Casual Tops
Random sparkle ≠ style.

Better option:
- Intentional embellished statement pieces

16. Heavily Distressed Ripped Jeans

Especially skinny ripped jeans—long gone.
Optional: Archive a favorite pair, don’t wear now.
17. Statement Prints That No Longer Match You

If you look at it and think, “Why do I own this?”—you’ve outgrown it.
18. Clothes You Have to Apologize For

If you feel defensive wearing it, it doesn’t belong in your life.
19. “Someday” Clothes

Old suits, old sizes, old lives.
Rule:
Archive the best. Remove the rest from your working closet.
20. Faux-Leather Knee-High Boots with Too Many Seams
Cheap materials + lots of stitching = cheap look.

Choose instead:
- Sleek boots with minimal detail. These are my faves from 7or9. You can find them here. Use code NADAMANLEY. https://7or9.com/discount/NADAMANLEY?ref=ldeqf6g8. Find other favorite boot styles in this catalog. https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/306H-SavpHgvqh

21. Overly Round-Toe Chunky Ballet Flats
Another 10-years-ago silhouette.

Try a Timeless Pair Instead

22. Old Wrap Tops with Loose Ties

Neither flattering nor intentional—often read as maternity wear.
23. Shiny Workout Leggings as Everyday Outfits

Leggings should be matte, dark, and intentional if worn casually.
24. Fitted Cap-Sleeve T-Shirts

Thin fabric + cap sleeves = unflattering proportions.
25. Faded Black Clothing

Greenish-gray “used to be black” pieces drag down everything.
Option: Dye them—or let them go.
26. Anything That’s Dated and You Don’t Love
If it fails the triangle, it fails the closet.

I’ve been wondering about the Scrunched Ballet Flats with Elastic Binding. I felt strange wearing them but I wasn’t sure why. Thanks for giving me permission to let those go.
