Buy This, Not That: Fall/Winter Edition - Nada Manley

Today I’m taking you through 10 of your favorite stores and sharing exactly what to buy this season—and what to skip. Think of this as your friendly shopping GPS. I’ll highlight the pieces that look modern, stylish, wearable, and flattering—and the ones that are going to date your outfits or just feel impossible to style in real life.

Before we begin, a quick reminder of two of my favorite style principles:

Frumpy = Dated + Unflattering.
Something isn’t “frumpy” because it’s modest or simple. It’s frumpy because the cut, proportion, or details are outdated and don’t flatter.

Trendy ≠ Automatically Good.
Some trends are fabulous and wearable—and some are just… trendy bad. A trendy bad item is technically “in style,” but still impossible to wear in a flattering way.

And, of course, one of my personal mantras:

Just because it’s in stores, doesn’t mean it’s in style.

Stores—especially “over 50” oriented retailers—are often seasons behind in silhouettes and styling. So that’s why we shop intentionally, not reactively.

Old Navy: What to Buy

Old Navy is what I call an ageless store: lots of modern pieces, lots of wearable silhouettes, and excellent prices.

Puffer Vests for transitional weather
Satin Slingback Flats (perfect when you want something a little dressy)

Skip:

Prairie-style blouses with oversized collars
(If you need a Halloween costume… maybe.)
Fitted blazers in cheap fabric
Tailoring only works when the tailoring is good.
Skinny ponte pants masquerading as trousers
Riding boots with lug soles (these will date quickly)
Cheap faux-leather slingbacks
