25 Modern Pieces to Wear This Fall/Winter (And What to Avoid)

Okay, I’ve got good news and I’ve got bad news.

The good news: there are some truly fabulous pieces in stores this fall and winter. The kind of pieces that feel modern, elevated, and flattering—exactly what we want.

The bad news: there are also some things out there that are… not great. Trendy in a way that doesn’t translate to real life. Or technically “in style,” but still just not doing us any favors.

So today, I’m breaking it all down. What to skip—and what to say yes to—so you can build a wardrobe that feels modern and stylish without trying to dress like your daughter… or mother.

Things to Skip This Season

1. Skinny Knit or Ponte Pants

These are being marketed as “pants” again… but they are leggings. No matter how many fake buttons they attach. If you want leggings, wear leggings. But wearing these as pants rarely creates a polished or modern silhouette.

2. Printed Tees from “Over 50” Brands

You know the ones. Busy prints, odd necklines, confusing sleeve lengths. Just… why. A simple solid tee is infinitely more modern and flattering.

3. Long, Flimsy Cardigans

These thin, drapey cardigans don’t complete an outfit—they just cover. They read dated and do nothing for your shape. If you need one for warmth at home, keep it at your desk. But don’t rely on it as part of an outfit.

4. Cowl Neck Sweaters

There are exceptions, but many of the ones in stores now are boxy, too long, with sleeves that are too short. It’s the combination that ages the look.

5. Ponchos

Let’s all collectively agree to choose a ruana instead. Ponchos tend to make the body look wide and shapeless. Ruana wraps add drama, movement, and intentionality.

6. Giant Ruffled Peter Pan Collars

These are whimsical in a Little House on the Prairie way… which is not what we’re going for. Unless your name is Gretel and you’re currently in a fairy tale, skip these.

7. Tops That Tie Instead of Button

The front-gap situation is just… no. If you have to find a special under-layer just to make it wearable, it’s not working.

8. Balloon or Genie Pants

I love a wide leg, but these are too voluminous and too hard to style. They overwhelm most bodies.

9. Culottes

The volume, the pleats, the length—just no. You’re not imagining it. They are difficult to wear flatteringly.

10. Tight Capri Pants

We already weren’t doing the classic capri… and now the trendy version is tight and ends at the knee. Absolutely not. Next.

11. Massive Shoulder Padding

Sculpted shoulders are lovely—to a point. But the linebacker versions will add bulk exactly where most of us don’t want it.

These are the pieces that will make your wardrobe feel modern, intentional, and stylish this season.

You do not need all of them today—but keep this list close.

Cozy, practical, effortless. Wear with denim, dresses, chinos—everything.
