How to Wear Color in Fall 2025: Key Trends & Color Combos

October 20, 2025 By: Nada Manleycomment

The easiest way to update your wardrobe for Fall 2025 is through color. Truly—nothing makes a bigger impact or gives you more bang for your buck. I’ve been watching color dominate the trend cycle this year in a way I honestly haven’t seen in a long time. So today, I’m breaking down the key color trends and color combinations that will help you build a fresh, modern wardrobe this season.

Find some stylish color combinations in my Fall Colors Guide.

The New Neutrals: Chocolate & Charcoal

The biggest neutral story of Fall 2025 is chocolate brown. It’s rich, chic, and everywhere—from leather to knitwear to handbags. Some are even calling brown the new black (I wouldn’t go that far!), but it’s definitely the neutral of the moment.

If chocolate brown doesn’t flatter your coloring, there’s good news: gray is your other must-have neutral this season. Everything from soft dove gray to deep charcoal is trending. So between chocolate and charcoal, you can pick the tone that best loves you back.

The Statement Shades: Burgundy, Red & Spice

This fall’s headline color is burgundy—or oxblood, merlot, marsala, plum, maroon…whatever name you prefer. The point is that there’s a version of burgundy for everyone. It’s what I call a near-neutral—a color that behaves like a neutral but adds so much richness.

Then there’s red. From deep chili red to bright tomato, we’re seeing every version of red right now. I love layering different shades together—think crimson with burgundy—for a tonal yet powerful statement.

And of course, mustard, amber, and spiced orange continue to bring warmth to fall outfits. These golden tones look incredible in textured fabrics like suede or corduroy.

Another color trend we are seeing this season is bold brights, worn either head to toe or as accents.

The Supporting Cast: Green, Blue & Soft Pastels

Greens are having a huge moment—olive, chartreuse, moss, even fresh grassy greens. Olive is an especially good medium neutral for brunettes who find beige unflattering.

In the blue family, denim remains everyone’s default neutral, but we’re also seeing icy blues and the comeback of cobalt. Cobalt is striking paired with brown or gray and gives any outfit a confident pop.

Unexpectedly, pastels are also part of the mix this fall. Dusty pinks, buttery yellows, and pale lilacs are being paired with deeper autumn tones, creating that modern contrast between light and rich.

How to Pair Your Colors

Let’s talk strategy—because pairing colors well is what makes your outfit look intentional.

Another example of bright, deep and rich colors paired in an outfit
  • Analogous colors: These are next to each other on the color wheel (like red and burgundy, or beige and camel). They create a harmonious, tonal look.
  • Complementary colors: These are opposite each other on the color wheel (like orange and blue). They make a bolder, high-contrast statement.
  • Neutral anchors: Use a neutral—like brown, gray, or navy—to “bridge” two colors if you’re unsure. It calms the combination and makes it more wearable.
  • Unexpected mixes: Try pairing light and rich colors together—like pale blue with deep burgundy—for a modern twist.

My Favorite Color Combinations for Fall 2025

  • Chocolate + Black – Sophisticated and modern. Don’t be afraid to mix dark neutrals.
  • Chocolate + Wine – The essence of Fall 2025: rich, warm, and luxurious.
  • Chocolate + Pink – Feminine and chic (this combo always reminds me of a little brown-and-pink outfit my daughter wore years ago!).
  • Chocolate + Amber or Spiced Orange – Tonal warmth at its best.
  • Chocolate + Olive – Earthy, elevated, and endlessly wearable.
  • Chocolate + Butter Yellow – Soft, creamy contrast that brightens brown beautifully.
  • Chocolate + Cobalt or Chartreuse – A pop of modern energy.

Now, on to burgundy. It’s endlessly versatile:

  • Burgundy + Pink – Romantic and elegant.
  • Burgundy + Olive – A natural pairing that feels sophisticated and grounded.
  • Burgundy + Navy or Cobalt – Deep and luxurious, but not too dark.
  • Burgundy + Taupe or Camel – Warm neutrals that lighten the palette beautifully.

And for green, don’t overlook these:

Outfit Inspiration

If you’re looking for visual cues, here are a few pairings I’m obsessed with this season:

  • Chocolate + Pink – Equal parts classic and modern.
  • Red + Burgundy – Tonal, confident, and bold.
  • Spiced Orange + Olive – Autumn perfection.
  • Brown + Chartreuse – Trend-forward yet surprisingly wearable.
  • Tomato Red + Camel or Mocha – A timeless power pairing.
  • Muted Red + Olive – Fall colors without the “Christmas” vibe.
  • Cobalt + Chocolate – Modern luxury.
  • Light Blue + Burgundy – Fresh, unexpected, and ideal for cooler complexions.

Remember, the magic isn’t just in the color—it’s in texture. Pair rich hues with tactile fabrics like suede, wool, leather, or velvet to add depth and dimension.

The Takeaway

Adding color is the easiest and most affordable way to breathe new life into your wardrobe this fall. You don’t need to overhaul everything—start with one piece or even an accessory in a trending shade. A chocolate brown bag, a wine-colored scarf, or a chartreuse sweater might be all it takes to make your whole wardrobe feel current.

So tell me—what’s your favorite color combo for Fall 2025? Are you Team Chocolate, Team Charcoal, or Team Burgundy?
