Shield your eyes, ladies. Shield your eyes and clutch your pearls, because today we’re talking about some of the most abysmal fall fashion finds being marketed to women over 50. These are the kinds of clothes that brands keep pushing at us, and honestly, they don’t belong anywhere near a modern wardrobe.
And before we dive into the fashion fails, I have a quick reminder for you. My Fall Masterclass Series is happening right now, roughly every other week. The next one is coming up on September 8, and I would love for you to join me. We’ll be breaking down the science and secrets behind effortless, everyday outfits.
The Pull-On Pants Problem
Let’s start with pull-on jeans and pants. Now, don’t get me wrong—there are good ones out there (Spanx, Rag & Bone, Frame have done nice versions). But what I’m seeing from “over 50” brands? Not it.
The big offenders: wide elastic waistbands that look like leggings trying to be jeans, strange embellishments, awkward hems, and cheap-looking denim. Some of these look like jeggings straight out of 2010, and the styling only makes it worse. And don’t get me started on tie-waist corduroy joggers—bulk on bulk in all the wrong places.
My advice? If you want pull-ons, stick to flat-front trousers or keep the waistband hidden under a top. Clean, simple, and modern is the way to go.

The Dreaded Twofers
If you want to age yourself instantly, buy a twofer. You know what I’m talking about—those shells with an attached drapey cardigan that’s supposed to look like layering. They’re marketed as “easy dressing,” but what they really are is dated and style-killing.
Real layers add structure and interest. These just add bulk and a whole lot of frump. Trust me—skip the fake layers and buy separates you can style in multiple ways.

What to Wear Instead
Modern two-pieces sets with cardigans and tanks (not a classic twinset, but a more updated silhouette for the tank/sleeveless sweater) underneath are a great alternative.

The Poncho That Doesn’t Work
Ponchos are tricky at the best of times, but the chiffon ponchos I’ve seen lately? Just no. The bold prints, the way they sit at the widest part of the hips, the way they add volume to the bust and middle—it’s not flattering. If you want the poncho vibe, grab a scarf and drape it. You’ll get the same flowy look without drowning your frame.

What to Wear Instead
Capes, wraps and scarves are a more modern and flattering alternative.

Printed Jersey Dresses
I love a knit dress. Comfort, ease, no ironing—what’s not to love? But the wrong print on jersey can scream dated faster than almost anything. Paisleys, florals, border prints—they look like 2010 mall fashion, not 2025 style.
If you want jersey, go for a modern print or a solid. Let the comfort stay while the look feels fresh.

What to Wear Instead
Modern knit dresses in solids, stripes or modern prints with shape and interesting detail are better options. Look for a more substantial knit, except in the case of a really flowy fit and flare style like the Tencel dress below.

Random Layers & Sad Cardigans
Then there are the endless dated cardigans and “statement” jackets that aren’t making any statement worth hearing. Waterfall cardigans in flimsy fabrics, round-hem jackets, animal-print inserts, metallic ombré monstrosities—they don’t flatter, they don’t modernize, they don’t add style.
The only layering pieces that work are structured ones: tweed, suede, leather, or even a clean, straight cardigan in a solid knit.

What to Wear Instead
The best layers this season include bombers, motos, and cropped trenches as well as classic or structured cardigans, jacket cardigans and lady jackets.

Printed Tees & Weird Tops
You know the ones. Thin, drapey, jersey tees with all-over florals or paisleys. Sometimes with curved hems. Sometimes tunic length. Sometimes with strange empire seams, border prints, or patterns that make your bust look droopy. These tops aren’t youthful or fun. They’re just dated.
When in doubt, choose stripes, solids, or graphic prints. Leave the weird details behind.

Dated Tops
These tops feature a variety of dated details, from a weirdly unflattering empire style to diagonal stripes that hit above the bust (making it look droopy) to lots of awkward, dated hems.

What to Wear Instead
Look for modern hemlines (asymmetric but sleek, bubble, peplum) and other on trend details for a statement top.

Muu-Muus & Shapeless Dresses
I love a glamorous caftan. But there’s a world of difference between a chic caftan and a jersey sack masquerading as a dress. Too many brands are selling what are essentially nightgowns and calling them “day dresses.” If you wouldn’t wear it to brunch, don’t let them convince you it’s streetwear.

What to Wear Instead
The modern maxi, shirtdress, or flowy caftan are better options for an easy everyday dress.

Tunics: The Walk of Shame
And then we come to tunics. Oh, the tunics. Croch-pointing hems, crotch-framing cutouts, rounded hems, flimsy fabrics, wild prints designed to “distract the eye.” They are everywhere, and they are all aging.
Yes, tunics can work when they’re structured, straight-hemmed, and simple. But the ones flooding stores right now? They deserve their own walk of shame.

What to Wear Instead
If you want a longer top for flattery, comfort, or modesty, there are plenty of more modern and flattering options. Longer tops are trending right now, and we can even find some tunics in the modern classic category.

Final Thoughts
Fashion over 50 doesn’t have to mean settling for clothes that are out of touch with modern style. In fact, it shouldn’t. You deserve clothes that feel current, flattering, and true to you—not clothes that put you in a separate “over 50” bubble.
So next time you’re shopping, remember: keep it clean, keep it classic, and skip the dated details. Your style—and your confidence—will thank you.
