Half the battle of building a great wardrobe is knowing what to buy, where to buy it—and just as importantly, what to skip. Today I’m breaking down the best (and not-so-best) pieces from eight of our favorite stores so you can shop smarter this fall.
If you’re new here—hi, I’m Nada! I’m a personal stylist and my passion is helping women look and feel beautiful and confident every single day. My system for building a wardrobe is based on three layers:
- Modern Classics (the foundation pieces)
- Modern Updates (the refreshers that keep your wardrobe current)
- Modern Statements (the personality pieces that make your wardrobe yours)

This “Buy This, Not That” guide is all about making those smart choices across brands we all know and love. Let’s dive in!
How to Shop This Post
I’ve made it super easy for you to shop everything I featured:
- Full Catalog – All the Buy This items are grouped together in one place for quick browsing.
- By Brand/Store – Each store (Talbots, Eileen Fisher, Chico’s, Boden, J.Crew, Frank & Eileen, Nic + Zoe, Anthropologie) has its own section with individual picks listed.
- Linked Photos – Every picture in the post is clickable, so if you see something you love, you can go straight to the item.
- Buy This / Not That – Each brand section includes my “Buy This” recommendations and the pieces I suggest you skip, so you can shop with confidence. The Not That items are in a separate section to prevent confusion.
- Easy to Navigate – Scroll through the blog like a catalog or use the brand headers to jump to your favorite store.
A Quick Introduction: Duffield Lane
Before we get into the 8 stores, I want to highlight a smaller brand I’ve been wearing nonstop: Duffield Lane. They sent me a few dresses to try, and I now own eight!
Shop all of these dresses here: https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/306H&SGKfZ?s=1410678
In order:
- The Caitlyn Ponte Dress – polished and conservative, but still versatile. https://stylists.shop/qLj
- The Hyacinth Dress (Red) – flattering, comfortable, with sleeves you can wear up or down. https://stylists.shop/qLg
- The Rebecca Ruffle Dress in Winter Garden Floral (sale!) – light, flattering, and perfect for fall. https://stylists.shop/qLm
- The Katie Dress in Enchanted Vines – so cute that strangers asked where I bought it. https://stylists.shop/qLo
- The Iris Satin Dress in Wine (sale!) – perfect for holidays and events, but versatile enough for weekends. https://stylists.shop/qLe
- The Adler Dress in Baked Apple – chic, polished, and easy to wear. https://stylists.shop/qLh
- The Samantha Dress in Berry Blooms – a woven fall floral popover shirtdress that works year-round. https://stylists.shop/qLf
- The Lillian Dress in Slate Stripe – the rare striped dress that’s actually cut in a flattering shape. https://stylists.shop/qLi

These are comfortable, practical, and stylish—exactly what I look for in dresses that work in my real life.
Talbots: What to Buy and What to Skip
Talbots is known as an “over 50” store, which means a lot of their pieces lean dated/frumpy, yut if you shop smart, you can absolutely find modern gems.
Buy This:
- Silky leopard blouse
- Tweed textured v-neck sweater
- Cable-knit sweaters
- Subtle printed blouse
- Polished basics like this classic blouse, neutral pants, and cozy knit travel sets

Not That:
- The so-called “Modern Classic” top (neither modern nor classic!)
- Border print tops that only look decent tucked in
- Overly frilly florals that skew matronly

Tip: Stick with solids and simple silhouettes here.
Eileen Fisher: Luxe but Tricky
Eileen Fisher is the queen of quality fabrics and craftsmanship—10/10 for luxury. But…many pieces are oversized and shapeless, which is hard to wear if you’re not tall and slim.
Buy This:
- Fitted silk or wool turtlenecks
- The silk slip skirt
- Classic silk blouses
- Cozy scarves are practical and updated
- This silk dress can be worn belted or unbelted
- Sweater-blazers are a more stylish alternative to long cardigans

Not That:
- Hooded knit vests (why?)
- Long shapeless cardigans
- Tunic tops that swallow your shape
- “Long over long” layering combos that add bulk

Tip: Look for shape and waist definition in this brand.
Chico’s: Less Is More
Chico’s is notorious for adding too many details to everything. Think “but wait, there’s more!” in all of their statement pieces.
Buy This:
- Sweater jacket in leopard
- Cropped tweed jackets
- Swing jackets in leopard
- Modern jewelry like hinged bracelets, leopard bracelet, brooch and bold earrings

Not That:
- Ponchos (aka cozy tents)
- Weird animal prints (“Bengal” pants, anyone?)
- Overly busy cardigans or knits
- Matchy statement jewelry sets

Tip: Focus on simple pieces and structure, not shapeless layers.
Boden: Ageless and Fun
Boden is one of my favorite ageless brands—color, patterns, unexpected details, and modern styling.
Buy This:
- Fab boots and shoes
- Striped sweaters (they do stripes better than anyone)
- Embroidered top and other corduroy pieces
- Fair Isle sweater
- Cute statement sweatshirts
- Silk blouses
- Corduroy dresses
- Chic jersey dress
- Knit sweater dress

Not That:
- Capri pants (universally unflattering)
- Jersey dresses that feel a little too basic
- Overly sweet pieces and delicate knits

Tip: Lean into their color and pattern mastery, but avoid pieces that feel too youthful.
J.Crew: Reliable and Versatile
J.Crew is a go-to for updated classics and wardrobe refreshers.
Buy This:
- Striped and solid button-downs
- Shaped-waist sweaters like this one in wine or cream (super flattering)
- The merino wool dress (timeless and versatile)
- Barn jackets (a signature)
- Brushed cashmere in modern colors
- Embellished and embroidered pieces
- Lady jackets and tweed jackets
- Modern accessories and bracelets
- Cool boots and jeans

Not That:
- Bulky, oversized sweaters
- Sweet Liberty-print tops with collars or too sweet sweaters
- Ponchos (again, no thanks)
- Borderline matronly chiffon skirts

Tip: Go for modern shapes and timeless fabrics.
Frank & Eileen: Relaxed California Cool
Frank & Eileen is known for effortless luxury—with a more premium price tag.
Buy This:
- Travel sets (corduroy or Carmel)
- Rory shirtdresses in corduroy or linen
- Jeans with versatile inseam lengths
- Knit dresses like the Cory
- Short linen Ireland dress
- Basic Tees tanks & cardigans
- Sweatshirt-material button-downs (so chic)
- Simple popover dresses (as long as they’re not too baggy)

Not That:
- Awkward striped hooded tunics
- Barry shirts (too short, odd plaids)
- Sleeveless tunic tops with skinny jeans (hello, 2000s)
- Expensive loungewear ponchos

Tip: Prioritize versatile investment pieces.
Nic + Zoe: Quality with Caution
Nic + Zoe offers good quality and comfortable knits, but you need to shop carefully.
Buy This:
- Simple dresses
- Knit tweed jackets
- Faux-leather boatneck tops
- Chunkier pointelle sweater in cream or black
- Fun fringey jacket
- Two piece printed set
- Chic bomber jackets
- Silky blouse and skirt
- Reversible casual jacket
- Statement jacket (if I pick them)
- Hammitt bag
- Jewelry
- Striped lady jacket
- Plaid sweater jacket
- Two-piece printed set
- Basics like tanks, slip skirts, jackets and Henleys

Not That:

Tip: Stick to basics, knits, and tweeds.
Anthropologie: Romantic and Boho Statements
Anthro is one of my favorite spots for statement pieces and blouses. But it’s also a minefield of overly youthful, trendy, or shapeless styles.
Buy This:
- Sherpa vests for layering
- Silk slip skirts in bold patterns
- Statement cardigans and sweaters
- Farm Rio collabs (10/10)
- Cropped jackets and structured vests and sleeveless blazers
- Romantic blouses with interesting patterns and details
- Somerset maxi
- Farm Rio shirtdress
- Occasionwear like the velvet dress

Not That:
- Completely sheer tops
- Over the top styling
- Hard to style pieces like this gingham vest
- Shapeless dresses
- Super trendy peplum tops
- Shapeless oversized knits
- Very youthful dresses
- Club clothes
- “Too much” dresses with multiple competing details
- Corduroy balloon pants (just no)
- Halter vest
- Strapless top

Tip: Shop Anthro for special, standout pieces, but skip the try-hard trends.
Final Thoughts
I could have covered 20 stores (and maybe I will in a part two!)—but this list of eight gives you a solid start for fall shopping. Remember, the key is not just to know what to buy, but also what to leave behind. That’s how you build a wardrobe that feels modern, flattering, and effortless.
If you found this helpful, share it with a friend you shop with, and don’t forget to subscribe so you never miss a style guide. And tell me in the comments: which store should I cover next time?
