I’ve got your forever wardrobe right here. These are 9 timeless pieces you can buy now and confidently wear for the rest of your life. As a personal stylist, my entire focus is helping women over 50 look and feel beautiful every single day, and a big part of that is building a wardrobe that will stand the test of time.
Lately, I’ve been talking a lot about timelessness versus trends—what people think is timeless but actually dates quickly, and what’s considered “dated” but is truly timeless.
In today’s video, I break down the details to look for in investment pieces, so you can buy now and wear forever.

1. The Perfectly Tailored Blazer
A blazer should be tailored—not tight, not baggy. Look for a single-breasted style with classic shoulders, lapels, and a length that hits at the hip or just below. Stick with neutral colors like ivory, navy, black, or camel. Avoid exaggerated shoulders, cropped cuts, flashy buttons, or trendy prints. My favorites include the J.Crew Helena blazer, Theory Etienette blazer, and Ralph Lauren’s single-breasted wool blazer.

Here’s a checklist for the most classic blazer:
- Tailored, not tight and not oversized
- Classic structured shoulders that hit at the right spot on the outside of the shoulder
- Single button with simple high quality button
- Moderate lapels (not skinny, not wide, not collarless)
- High hip to hip length
- Full length sleeves of tailored width (not tight, not long and baggy, and not scrunched)
- Dark neutral in high quality fabric
- No extraneous hardware, buttons or details

2. The Classic White Shirt
Think cotton poplin or pinpoint oxford, with a structured collar, straight or slightly shaped fit, and zero frills. No gaping at the bust (fashion tape or a small stitch works wonders). Avoid ruffles, puffed sleeves, tunic lengths, or cropped versions. I love the Brooks Brothers non-iron shirt, Frank & Eileen’s “Eileen” button-up, and Everlane’s relaxed poplin shirt.

- Straight or slightly tapered fit. Not tight, not oversized.
- No front pockets

3. Straight-Leg or Cigarette Pants
The most enduring silhouette is a straight leg, slim straight, or cigarette cut—mid to high rise, flat front or single pleat, and minimal detailing. Skip the extremes like skinnies or super-wide legs, and keep the finish clean. Some classics: J.Crew Natalia pant, Theory’s classic straight leg, and Banana Republic’s Modern Slim cigarette pant.

Here’s a Checklist for the Perfect Pant:
- Straight, slim straight or cigarette cut. May be slightly tapered.
- Mid to moderate high rise.
- Flat front or single pleat.
- Ankle length for slim straight or full length (break at instep) for a slightly wider straight leg style.
- Dark neutral and high quality fabric for your first pair: wool, crepe, twill, ponte.

How a Classic Pant Should Fit:

The Right Length
The slimmer the leg, the shorter the pant. A slightly wider straight leg will be full length and should break at the top of the foot.

4. The Little Black Dress
A timeless LBD has a simple silhouette—sheath, fit-and-flare, or slip style—in high-quality fabric like crepe, silk, ponte knit, or wool. Hem length should be knee to midi, and necklines should be scoop, crew, V-neck, or boat neck. Avoid excessive ruching, cutouts, lace overlays, or overly trendy sleeves. I adore MM.LaFleur’s flared dress in Admiral Crepe and Lafayette 148’s crepe sheath.

Skip ruffles, tie necks, puff sleeves, or shiny poly substitutes. Equipment’s Essential Silk Shirt, Everlane’s Washable Silk Relaxed Shirt, and LilySilk blouses are all stellar choices.
