Okay—don’t go shopping without me and definitely don’t go without this list. Today I’m breaking down the Fall 2025 trends that actually matter for women over 50…and a few we can happily skip.
Fall is my favorite season because it’s where fashion gets dramatic, artistic, and fun—all at once.
Shop the trends in this video in this catalog (which will be updated all season long as more styles come into stores).
Big Themes You’ll See Everywhere
1) Luxe Country Life
Think “weekend at the estate” but practical: Fair Isle sweaters, riding boots, quilted outerwear, plaid, and knitwear styled with shorts. Seen at Max Mara, Burberry, Altuzarra, Hermès, Calvin Klein. Translation for us: lean into tweeds, quilted barn jackets, polished chelsea/riding boots, and one great plaid.

2) Grunge–Goth Romance
Undone elegance with darker lace, ruffles, and chiffon in fall palettes—sometimes with leather. Seen at Prada, Alaïa, Dior, Alexander McQueen, Ferragamo, Alberta Ferretti. Keep it wearable with one moody piece (lace blouse, chiffon skirt) layered under/over something opaque.

3) Western Touches (Not Costumes)
A hint of cowboy: fringe details, suede, denim-on-denim, western-inspired boots. Just one accent is enough.

4) Throwback Decades
Nods to the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, even Edwardian. Examples: Fendi (’30s air), Chloé (boho ’70s), Calvin Klein (’90s), Tom Ford (’80s). Choose the decade that flatters you, not the decade that overwhelms you.

5) The Return of Color
We’re finally moving past “beige on beige on beige.” Expect rich jewel tones (emerald, sapphire, garnet) and bold but not neon shades (electric orange, aqua, royal purple). Burgundy/oxblood is the season’s hero—from raspberry to deep wine.

6) Sculpted, Curved Silhouettes
Hourglass jackets, peplum revival, barrel denim, rounded sleeves. Seen at Schiaparelli, Saint Laurent, Victoria Beckham, and breakout names like Duran Lantink. Try one sculptural piece and keep the rest sleek.

7) Unapologetic Femininity
Bows, lace, old-Hollywood shapes, nipped waists. Think Prada, Miu Miu, Schiaparelli—but styled cleanly for day.

Wearable Trends You’ll Actually See in Stores
Statement Coats
Sculptural shapes, exaggerated/strong shoulders, unexpected colors, shearling or (faux) fur trims. Seen at Totême, The Row. Even one dramatic coat makes jeans + knit feel current.
Try: a colored wool coat, a subtle cocoon silhouette, or a classic trench with a capelet detail.

Leather—in Color
Oxblood, deep olive, chocolate, slate blue, even blush and beige. Seen at Bottega Veneta, Khaite, Nanushka, Staud.
Try: a colored leather skirt or jacket. Oxblood is forever—investment-worthy.

Sharp Tailoring
Single-button blazers, pleated trousers, elongated vests. Slightly oversized but clean. Seen at Peter Do, Ferragamo, Tory Burch.
Fit tip: keep shoulders structured and sleeves tailored; pair with a knit tee or silk blouse.

Neutrals—with Texture
Tonal looks elevated by mixing cashmere, suede, wool flannel, denim, leather. Seen at Max Mara, The Row, Lemaire.
Try: head-to-toe camel or grey, but vary the fabric so it looks luxe, not flat.

Jewel Tones Everywhere
Suits, coats, leather, knits in emerald/sapphire/garnet. Seen at Brandon Maxwell, Carolina Herrera, Prabal Gurung.
Style it: anchor bright pieces with muted accessories (tan, chocolate, charcoal).

Peplum 2.0 (Architectural)
Less frilly, more sculptural; some asymmetric hems. Seen at Proenza Schouler, Coperni.
Fit tip: balances a straightening midsection; pair with slim pants or a pencil/midi skirt.

Polished Chunky Knits
Slouchy-but-structured sweaters in beautiful yarns styled with midi skirts, leather pants, even tailored shorts. Seen at Gabriela Hearst, Joseph, Akane Utsunomiya.
Try: half-tuck a ribbed funnel-neck into a midi, add boots.

Skirt Lengths: Real Options Again
Midis still rule, but knee-length is back (above, at, or just below the knee). Minis exist too—proceed as you please. Seen broadly across Altuzarra, Khaite, and street style.
Petite tip: knee-length can be more leg-lengthening than mid-calf.

Burgundy = The It Color
Universally flattering in the right shade; treat as a near-neutral. Seen widely: Fendi, Victoria Beckham.
Try: a burgundy knit dress, leather bag, or shoe to plug into what you own.

Pinstripes
A menswear classic on modern shapes—wide-leg trousers, vests, coats. Seen at Theory, Joseph.
Make it feminine: mix with silk camisoles, bow blouses, or a sleek pump/loafer.

Quilted Textures
Skirts, tops, accessories—even shoes. Seen at Ganni, Stand Studio, Marni.
Try: a quilted skirt with a simple cashmere crewneck.

Knit Skirt Sets
Cozy, coordinated tops + skirts (often belted, sometimes with contrast piping). Seen at Staud, Reiss, Jonathan Simkhai.
Tip: if colors match closely, you can “fake” a set with pieces you already own.

Capes & Capelets
Drama without bulk—the new poncho. From evening gowns to sweater-capelets and cape-detail coats. Seen at Valentino, Elie Saab, Max Mara.
Wear it: over monochrome trousers and a fine-gauge knit. Instant glamour.

Faux-Fur Accents
Trims, collars, cuffs, detachable stoles—cozy and a bit restrained. Seen at Stand Studio, Stella McCartney, Apparis.
Tip: detachable collars transform a coat you already own.

Sheer Layers (Made Wearable)
Think sheer sleeve/hem or a chiffon blouse under a chunky knit; mesh turtlenecks under suiting. Seen everywhere (Prada, Acne Studios).
Rule: one sheer element at a time, grounded by opaque layers.

Texture Clash
Patent + mohair, shearling + silk, tweed + sleek leather. Seen at Dries Van Noten, Ulla Johnson, Altuzarra.
Easy formula: matte knit + glossy leather; rough tweed + smooth satin.

Trends I’m Skipping (or Tweaking)
- Ultra-thin stilettos (needle-thin). Beautiful…until you try to walk. Opt for sturdy heels or flared kitten heels.
- Micro-minis & hot pants. If sitting equals exposure, it’s a no from me. Choose knee-length or a tailored mini with opaque tights.
- The naked dress. Gorgeous on runways, tough in real life. Swap for strategic sheers (sleeves, yokes, overlays).
- Puddled/dragging denim. Trip hazard and shortening. Aim for a clean break at the shoe.
- Extreme distressing. A little fray is fine; “shredded to ribbons” isn’t timeless—or practical.

How to Make These Work After 50
- Shop your closet first. Pull plaids, quilted pieces, pinstripes, burgundy, lace, leather, and knee-length skirts.
- Update one pillar: a statement coat, a sculptural blazer, or colored leather.
- Pick a palette: neutrals with texture or a jewel-tone story (emerald + chocolate, garnet + camel, sapphire + charcoal).
- Balance shape: if the top is sculptural, keep the bottom sleek (and vice versa).
- Layer smart: one sheer, one opaque; one glossy, one matte.
- Footwear reality check: stable heels, chic flats, sleek boots—choose what you can actually live in.
