The Style Scorecard: My Secret for Knowing When an Outfit Works

July 28, 2025 By: Nada Manley4 Comments

Have you ever stood in front of the mirror wondering, Is this outfit too much… or is it just boring? I used to ask myself that all the time, until I started using a simple system that changed the way I get dressed every day. Everything I do is designed to help you build a wardrobe that makes you feel confident, stylish, and beautiful every single day. And today I want to share a tool with you that I’ve been teaching in my masterclasses and using in my own life—what I call the Style Scorecard.

This idea isn’t new. It actually started decades ago as something called the 16‑Point System. Back then, the idea was that each outfit should have about 16 “points,” with different items assigned different values depending on how interesting or bold they were. Over time, fashion changed (and thank goodness, simplified), and now we use a modern version: the 7–9 Point System.

Here’s how it works:

  • Simple, basic pieces (like plain jeans, a solid tee, or a neutral sweater) are each worth 1 point.
  • Statement pieces—anything with color, pattern, texture, or scale—are worth 2 points.
  • Accessories that add style (like a belt, bold jewelry, or a jacket you didn’t need for warmth) are usually 2 points as well.

Your goal is to end up with an outfit that lands somewhere in that sweet spot of 7–9 points. It’s not a rule, but it’s a great benchmark that makes you instantly look polished and pulled together without being over the top.

You can find everything in this video here.

Let’s break it down with examples.

A white t‑shirt, simple jeans, and plain sneakers?
Each item is 1 point. That’s a 3‑point outfit. Totally fine… but probably not very exciting.

Now, add a bold green jacket.
That jacket is a non‑essential layer and a statement color—2 points.
Suddenly, you’ve got a 5‑point outfit.

Swap your sneakers for leopard Mary Janes.
Another 2 points.
You’re now at 7 points—and boom, you’ve hit the style sweet spot!

Want to push it further? Add statement earrings.
That bumps you up to 9 points.
Same base outfit, but now you look intentional, vibrant, and modern.

Why this matters.

In summer, you naturally have fewer pieces (and fewer points). A statement dress with statement shoes might only be 4 points—but it can still look amazing. In winter, you have more layers, so your points add up faster.

Your personal style matters too. If you’re a minimalist, you might stay closer to 5–6 points. If you love drama and creativity, you might live happily in the 10‑point zone. But knowing how to count those points helps you make intentional choices—whether that’s adding a belt, swapping your flats, or editing out an accessory so your outfit doesn’t feel chaotic.

A quick tip: Accessories are your best friend.

The easiest way to bump up your score (and your style) is through accessories. A textured bag, a great pair of earrings, or a belt that isn’t strictly necessary will instantly add points—and personality.

I’ve been having so much fun teaching this in my live masterclasses, and this blog post is actually inspired by one of those sessions. If you’d like a deeper dive and want to see more examples—including how this system shifts for fall and winter—just let me know in the comments or reply with the word OUTFITS and I’ll send you the replay link.

Once you start using the Style Scorecard, you’ll never wonder again if your look is “too much” or “too boring.” It’s such a simple, empowering way to get dressed with confidence every single day.

Love you guys! Let me know how your outfits score this week—I’d love to hear. 💛

Thank you so much! You are so right about personal style having a lot to do with it. The scorecard remains the same for the seasons, in that the simple pieces for winter get 1 points and the non essential or statement pieces get 2 points, but you’ll have more points in the winter usually. I do have a winter scorecard video coming up where I’ll show how to use it in winter. Thanks so much for the comment!
