How to Pick the Right Shoes for Your Outfit

June 9, 2025 By: Nada Manleycomment

I don’t mean to brag, but I am a bit of a shoe expert—part collector, part aficionado. Over the years, I’ve learned that the shoes we choose can completely transform our outfits. They can elevate a simple look, flatter our bodies, and even add a little magic to pieces we’ve owned forever..

And that’s why today, we’re talking about one of my favorite style topics: how to pick the right shoes for your outfit.

Why Shoes Matter More Than You Think

Shoes aren’t just the finishing touch on an outfit—they are styling tools. Every pair you wear should pull its weight in one (or more) of these ways:

  • Add interest, personality, or style
  • Flatter your body and balance proportions
  • Resuscitate a dull or basic outfit

If your shoes aren’t doing at least one of these things? It might be time to make a change.

1️⃣ Match Shoe Scale to Your Body and Outfit

The first strategy is about matching the scale of your shoes to your body and your outfit.

👉 Petite or slim build (like me)? Go for smaller-scale shoes—delicate sandals, sleek flats, refined loafers.
👉 Tall or curvier body type? You can handle chunkier shoes—platforms, bold loafers, lug soles, substantial boots.

You also want to match the visual weight of your shoes to the weight of your outfit:

  • Light, floaty dresses → light shoes
  • Wide-leg trousers or heavy coats → chunkier shoes

Contrast is a choice! Wearing chunky shoes with a slim silhouette, or delicate shoes with a bold outfit, creates an edgier, fashion-forward look—but it’s less classically flattering. Decide which effect you want.

2️⃣ Use Shoes to Lengthen the Leg Line

Shoes are your secret weapon for creating longer, leaner-looking legs—even without heels. Here’s how:

  • Low vamp shoes (showing more of the top of your foot) visually extend your legs.
  • Nude shoes matched to your skin tone create an unbroken line.
  • Pointed or almond toe shoes elongate the leg.
  • Matching your shoe color to your hem (ex: black boot with black pants) avoids cutting off your leg line.

If you’re wearing cropped, boxy, or oversized outfits (which can be tricky to flatter), lean into these leg-lengthening tricks even more.

3️⃣ Let Shoes Add Style to Basics

I always say: Basics + Fabulous Accessories = An Outfit.

Shoes can make or break this equation. If your wardrobe is full of basic shoes, you’re missing an opportunity.

  • Jeans + tee + statement shoe → chic and modern
  • All-neutral outfit + pop of color or pattern shoe → instant style boost
  • Leopard print shoes? They work with almost everything. (I dare you to find an outfit they don’t improve!)

And of course, the style of shoe should reflect your style personality:

  • Classic → kitten heels, loafers
  • Edgy → platforms, hardware
  • Artistic → bold textures, color blocking, sculptural shapes

Think of shoes as your outfit’s exclamation point—they set the tone and tie everything together.

4️⃣ Balance Shoe Shape With Your Bottoms

Here’s how I approach matching shoes to different bottoms:

  • Slim pants (skinny, cigarette, tapered) → sleeker shoes (ballet flats, loafers, ankle boots, low-profile sneakers)
  • Wide-leg trousers or jeans → chunkier shoes (platform loafers, wedges, thick-soled sneakers)
  • Midi skirts & dresses → medium-scale shoes, with pointed or almond toes for leg-lengthening
  • Shorts → nude, metallic, or tonal shoes that elongate the leg (avoid heavy, dark, chunky shoes)

Key rule: The less flattering the bottoms are, the more flattering your shoes need to be!

5️⃣ Use Shoes to Fix Flattering Challenges

Some outfits need extra help to look their best. That’s where the right shoes come in:

  • Cropped pants → low vamp, skin-tone-matching, pointy/almond toe shoes
  • Boxy, shapeless layers → structured shoes (pointed loafers, block heels) to add polish and sharpness
  • Loose loungewear → sleek sneakers or refined sandals to keep the look intentional
  • Long shorts → leg-lengthening shoes like nude wedges, slingbacks, or tonal sneakers

When the outfit is tricky, your shoe choice becomes critical.

6️⃣ Should Shoes Match Your Bag?

Not exactly—but you do want to coordinate the formality, texture, and tone.

  • Polished shoes → polished bag
  • Casual shoes → casual bag
  • Metallic shoes + metallic bag → ideally the same metallic (or tie them together with jewelry)

Matching used to mean color-matching (remember the 80s?), but today it’s more about creating a cohesive, intentional look.

7️⃣ The Wrong Shoe Theory

The “wrong shoe theory” says you can make an outfit more modern and interesting by choosing an unexpected shoe:

  • Classic outfit → funky shoe
  • Funky outfit → dainty shoe

This works brilliantly for adding edge to your look (think sneakers with floaty dresses). But be aware—it’s not always the most flattering choice. Ask yourself: Is flattery or style expression my goal today?

8️⃣ The Old Dress, New Shoe Theory

One of my favorite personal tricks: update an old favorite dress with a new pair of shoes.

Often we stop wearing something we love simply because it feels dated or stale. But when you pair it with fresh, modern shoes, it instantly feels new again. Try it—you’ll fall in love with your dress all over again.

Final Thoughts

Shoes are not “just accessories.” They are powerful style tools. When chosen with intention, they:

  • Add interest and personality
  • Flatter your body and lengthen your leg line
  • Transform your proportions
  • Instantly elevate your outfits

They don’t have to be high, trendy, or expensive—but they should always be purposeful. Think about your lifestyle, your wardrobe, and the types of outfits you wear most often—then choose shoes that complete them with style.

When you get the shoe right, the whole outfit just clicks.

Now tell me—what’s your biggest challenge when it comes to pairing shoes with outfits? What are your most versatile shoes? I’d love to hear!
