So often, we think updating our style requires a complete overhaul. But the truth is, the biggest difference often comes from small, intentional tweaks. That’s what I want to share with you today: 20(ish!) easy swaps that will help you modernize your wardrobe without starting from scratch.
Let’s Get Into the Swaps
Here are 20+ style substitutions you can make right now to feel instantly more current. Shop the modern swaps in this video (and many more) here:
SHOES

1. Trade “comfort-only” shoes (like Velcro sandals) for stylish comfort sandals—think Birkenstock-style footbeds in modern finishes. Yes, you can have both comfort and style.
2. Swap plain old sneakers for fashion sneakers. New Balance, Adidas Sambas, Gola, even Golden Goose—pick a style that adds flair, not just function.
3. Replace clunky athletic shoes with streamlined walking shoes like OnCloud or Hoka Transport. They’re still functional but look far more current.
4. Retire the black block-heel sandal for either a kitten heel or a flat metallic sandal. Both are sleek, fresh, and surprisingly versatile.
5. Say goodbye to wedge flip-flops. I beg you. Instead, go for sleek flat flip-flops (like Havaianas) or leather thong sandals for a minimalist look.
Jewelry & Accessories

6. Ditch dated statement necklaces (the multi-color, multi-material ones) and try a chunky chain or pearl statement necklace—timeless and modern.
7. Replace delicate studs that disappear with medium-sized hoops or bold button earrings that actually show up.
8. Let go of the “sensible” vinyl handbag and invest in a stylish bag close to your hair color. It’ll go with everything.
Clothing Changes That Matter

9. Retire skinny jeans in favor of slim straight or cropped straight jeans. They’re just as flattering and infinitely more modern.
10. Swap clingy, drapey tees for elevated tees with personality—elbow sleeves, structured fabrics, or subtle embellishment.
11. Replace capris with ankle-length pants or midi skirts. Capris chop your leg line awkwardly—ankle pants flatter everyone.
12. Swap tunics for hip-length tops. They give you coverage without overwhelming your shape.
13. Say goodbye to long, flimsy cardigans. Instead, choose waist-length open knit cardigans or structured short jackets.
14. Lose the fleece hoodie and go for a chunky cardigan, a sweater blazer, or a half-zip pullover. Way more polished, still cozy.
Pattern & Fabric Upgrades

15. Ditch loud florals (especially those purple-blue-black prints) and opt for stripes, animal print, tone-on-tone florals, or polka dots for a cleaner, more timeless vibe.
16. Swap clingy knits for ribbed or structured knit tops. They skim instead of squeeze, and they hide a multitude of sins.
17. Replace drawstring or smocked-waist pants with flat-front linen pants. They’re more flattering, tuck-friendly, and versatile.
18. Swap tunic + leggings combos for hip-length tops and straight-leg ankle pants—a sleeker version of your go-to outfit formula.
Dresses & Layers

19. Retire that fitted knee-length sheath dress from a decade ago and try a tailored midi or A-line silhouette that skims the body.
20. Replace clingy knit dresses with structured shirt dresses or tiered cotton styles. Much easier to wear, no shapewear required.
21. Be cautious with empire waist dresses. Unless you have a small bust, these can add volume where you don’t want it. Go for natural waist or adjustable wrap dresses instead.
Outerwear & Final Details

22. Swap dated utility jackets for modern chore jackets or shackets. They’re still casual but look more current and intentional.
23. Get rid of tight denim jackets. Go for slightly oversized or cropped—but not tight—denim styles. Keep it simple and skip the embellishments.
24. Cold shoulder tops? Let them go. Try off-the-shoulder, sheer sleeves, or interesting cutouts for a fresher, more elegant take.
25. Say goodbye to keyhole necklines and hello to scoop, V-neck, or square necklines—flattering, classic, and here to stay.
These swaps are about progress, not perfection. You don’t have to reinvent your whole wardrobe—just start with one or two changes and build from there. I promise you’ll see a difference in how your outfits look and how you feel in them.

I was under the impression that petites should wear short jackets.
