The Everyday Dress You Didn’t Know You Needed

May 5, 2025 By: Nada Manleycomment

If you want your style to be complicated, time-consuming, expensive, and overwhelming… this probably isn’t the post for you. But if you’re ready to simplify your mornings, feel beautiful in what you wear, and look effortlessly pulled together? Welcome. You’re in the right place.

But here’s the thing: getting dressed starts in your closet. If your closet is a mess, if it stresses you out, or if you can’t see the forest for the trees every time you try to get dressed, I want to invite you to my upcoming Live Closet Edit session. It’s part of the Style Confidence Club, and you only need a one-month membership to join us. We’ll get your closet ready for the season ahead, create go-to outfits from what you already own, and finally make getting dressed feel easy. And you can join us here.

Now, onto the magic I want to share today: the house dress.

Yes — the house dress. I am on a one-woman mission to bring it back. Because for so many of us, the problem isn’t that we don’t have clothes. It’s that we have too many of the wrong ones. Fast fashion, plastic fabrics, overwhelming choices… it’s no wonder we default to sweats or leggings.

But let me make a case for the house dress: it’s simple, stylish, comfortable, breathable, and feminine — all in one. You throw it on, you look like you made an effort (even if you didn’t), and you feel like your best self. Even if you don’t think of yourself as a “dress person,” I encourage you to try it.

For me, dresses check all the boxes. They work with my lifestyle (hello Florida heat), they align with my personal style (feminine, easy, put-together), and they simplify my mornings. One and done. No need to match a top and bottom, fuss with belts or overthink layering — just put on the dress, maybe add earrings and sandals, and I’m good to go.

But not all dresses are created equal. I’ve learned what makes a dress my go-to and what makes one just sit in the closet. So let me share my house dress criteria — or what I call my terms and conditions:

  • No strapless bras required. I want a dress I can wear with a regular bra. Period.
  • Machine washable. If it’s dry clean only, I’ll never wear it.
  • No fussy fabrics. I go for cotton, gauze, linen, or jersey — soft, breathable, and easy to care for.
  • Ease of movement. I need to cook, clean, run errands, and maybe do a little dance in it.
  • Flattering but not restrictive. I love a smocked waist or A-line shape — styles that let me eat pasta and feel cute.
  • The right length. If you don’t love your arms, get sleeves. Don’t love your legs? Maxi length. There’s always a stylish solution.
  • A pattern or color that hides mess. I don’t want to tiptoe around my own house worrying about spills or pet hair.

The best part is how a great house dress makes you feel: feminine, put together, and just a little bit elevated. It’s not about dressing for anyone else — it’s about taking care of yourself and reclaiming a sense of grace and intention in your day.

And yes, I have favorites. Whether you want to try one for $25 or splurge on something luxurious, here are a few I recommend:

Under $50

Old Navy

  • Boden Jersey Dresses (like the Eloise) – Soft as a T-shirt but prettier. https://stylists.shop/dPP
  • H&M Tiered Maxi – Flowy, breezy, and looks way more expensive than it is. https://stylists.shop/dPO

Premium Picks

Frank & Eileen
Quince version of the Frank & Eileen
Emerson Fry
PrintFresh
Mirth
My Future
  • Frank & Eileen Mary Shirt Dress – Washable Italian cotton. Timeless. https://stylists.shop/dPR and the Quince version https://stylists.shop/dPQ
  • Emerson Fry Francina Caftan – Ethically made, elegant, and effortless. https://stylists.shop/dPS
  • Printfresh Caftans – Whimsical prints, artistic vibes. You’ll feel like royalty. https://stylists.shop/dPT
  • Mirth Oaxaca Dress – Artisan-crafted, stunning, and yes, it’s $350 — but it’s next-level. https://stylists.shop/dPX

The point isn’t price. The point is finding a dress that you’ll feel comfortable reaching for even on non-special, no big deal kind of days — a dress that you’ll actually wear and that supports your real life and makes it easier.

So here’s my challenge to you: try it. Just try living in a dress — for a day, a weekend, or a whole season. See how it changes your mood. See how it lifts your energy. See how it reminds you to take care of yourself. You might just find that the everyday dress you didn’t know you needed becomes the one you can’t live without.

Let me know in the comments — are you already a dress lover? Or is this all new for you? I’d love to hear from you!
