The Best (and Worst) Dresses for Your Body Type

May 22, 2025 By: Nada Manleycomment

If you’ve ever tried on what feels like a mountain of dresses—pile after pile—only to leave empty-handed, I get it. That used to be me, too. But here’s the truth: finding the right dress isn’t about luck. It’s about decoding what works for your body type, and today, I’m walking you through exactly how to do that.

Whether you’re passionate about style or just want to feel confident and comfortable in your clothes, you’re in the right place. I’ve built my entire platform on helping women—especially over 50—create wardrobes that make them feel beautiful, empowered, and truly at home in their own skin. You don’t need to be a fashionista to want that. You just need a little guidance, and that’s where I come in.

Now, let’s talk dresses. Because we’ve got a lot to cover.

Fit First, Always

The absolute most important thing in a dress? Fit. If it fits beautifully, it can be a little out of trend or not “perfect” for your body type and still look amazing. Fit is everything. And if you’re not proportional (stronger upper or lower body), that’s okay—we’re going to address that, too.

Here’s my tip: choose one intentional change to focus on next time you shop. Maybe you try a different neckline. Or you swap out spaghetti straps for sleeves. Maybe you experiment with A-line skirts instead of straight. One small tweak can lead to big style breakthroughs.

Dress with Purpose

When trying on dresses, ask yourself:

  • Do I feel confident in this?
  • Am I fussing with it constantly?
  • Do I like how it looks from every angle?

If you’re fidgeting with it or don’t love the view from the side or back, it’s not the one. Try again.

Also, use color and texture to express your style. If the fit is perfect but the color drains you, it won’t work. Choose colors and fabrics that make you feel like you.

Understanding Your Body Type

Red Body Type
Blue Body Type
Green Body Type
Orange Body Type
Purple Body Type
Yellow Body Type

In my system, I use a color-based way to describe body types. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Orange/Green – Pear shape (stronger lower body). Orange has a defined waist; green doesn’t.
  • Blue/Yellow – Rectangle or Apple. Blue = straight/slim. Yellow = fuller, especially in the belly/bust.
  • Red – Hourglass. Shoulders and hips are about the same; waist is defined.
  • Purple – Inverted Triangle. Strong shoulders, narrower hips.

Universally Flattering Dresses

These silhouettes tend to work for most women:

  • Tunic Dresses (especially short ones!)
  • Shirt Dresses
  • Fit and Flare
  • Wrap Dresses

Look for good fit, flattering color, the right neckline, and a length that works for your body.

Dresses That Don’t Work for Most

Let’s be honest—some dress styles are just plain hard to wear:

  • Bodycon dresses – Unless you’re wearing great shapewear and feel confident in every curve, these are tough.
  • Tent or Swing dresses – All that fabric with no shape? No thank you.
  • Long, shapeless dresses – With no waist definition and nothing showing, they can overwhelm.

What Not to Wear by Body Type

Hourglass (Red)
Avoid:

  • Boxy shift dresses
  • Drop-waist styles
Why: They erase your waist and mess with your natural balance.

Pear (Orange/Green)
Avoid:

  • Mermaid/trumpet dresses
  • Tight pencil skirts
  • Spaghetti straps with no shoulder detail
Why: These exaggerate hips and minimize your upper body, creating imbalance.

Rectangle/Apple (Blue/Yellow)
Avoid:

  • Clingy bodycon dresses
  • High-neck sheath styles
  • Shift dresses with no waist
Why: These highlight a straight waist or draw attention to the belly without providing shape.

Inverted Triangle (Purple)
Avoid:

  • Statement shoulders
  • One-shoulder with volume
  • High-neck fitted dresses
Why: They add bulk to the upper half and make the body look top-heavy.

The Best Dresses by Body Type

Pear (Orange/Green)
Look for:

  • A-line or fit-and-flare dresses
  • Shirt dresses with top detail
  • Flowy midi or short styles
Tip: Light or interesting tops + darker or simple bottoms = balance.

Final Thoughts

Dresses can be magical, but they’re one of those items you have to try on. I always recommend brands like Quince and Nordstrom—both offer easy returns, and Quince even has a 365-day policy!

Now that you’re armed with the right silhouettes for your shape, you can shop smarter. Instead of looking for any size 12, you’re going to hunt for the specific styles that flatter you.
