Listen, I don’t want to brag—but nobody overpacked better than I did. I once packed an entire 28-inch suitcase just for shoes. On another trip, I brought a whole suitcase filled only with books. And honestly? I stand by those decisions. At the time, they felt completely justified.
But today, I’m a recovering—no, fully recovered—overpacker. And if you’ve ever struggled with packing too much, you’re in the right place. I’ve come a long way, and I want to help you do the same. These days, as a personal stylist, I work with women to streamline their travel wardrobes so they actually wear what they pack—every single day of the trip—and love how they look doing it.
Yes, I once had to rent a second car just for my luggage. I’m not proud. But I’ve learned from it—and now I teach a system that keeps your suitcase light, your mornings stress-free, and your outfits on point. I call it the Cluster System, and it has totally changed the way I pack (and travel).

First: Change Your Packing Mindset
The first hurdle is mental. If you’ve always been an overpacker, there’s probably a part of you that likes having all the options. I used to fantasize about those old Louis Vuitton trunks—the ones that open up into wardrobes and vanities. I wanted to bring my whole closet because how was I supposed to know what mood I’d be in on Thursday in Tuscany?
But here’s the thing: being prepared doesn’t mean bringing everything. It means planning. And your suitcase is not your closet. So let’s stop packing for every possible scenario and start packing for the most likely ones.
Step One: Build Clusters, Not Chaos
Clusters are curated outfit capsules that work together seamlessly. One cluster = 3 tops + 2 bottoms + 1 jacket. That’s 6 pieces. And from those 6 pieces? You can create 12 different outfits. Add one dress (especially for spring/summer trips), and the possibilities expand even more.
My general rule: Pack one cluster per week of your trip.
For example, here’s a spring/summer cluster formula:
- 3 Tops (mix of dressy, casual, and in-between)
- 2 Bottoms (e.g., white linen shorts + breezy skirt)
- 1 Jacket (goes with everything)
- 1 Dress (bonus!)
That’s your core. Add outlier outfits (like activewear or something formal) only if your itinerary calls for them. Your travel outfit can also be an outlier.

Step Two: Choose Shoes Strategically
You do not need a suitcase just for shoes. (Old me is screaming.) I now follow the Three Shoe Rule:
- Walking Shoe – Comfortable sneakers or modern sandals.
- Versatile Shoe – Something you can dress up or down (like a loafer or a flat sandal).
- Dress Shoe – A metallic kitten heel or elegant flat for dinners or dressy outings.
Whatever you bring, make sure every pair goes with every outfit in your cluster.

Step Three: The Two-Bag Rule
You need two bags:
- A carry-on tote that holds your essentials and can sit on your suitcase.
- A smaller crossbody/clutch/wallet that slips inside the tote and goes with you to dinner, sightseeing, or shopping.
One hauls. One handles. Easy.
Bonus: I recently discovered the Zuri tote and Nia clutch from Pomoia—and I am OBSESSED. They’re stylish, structured, and make me feel like I have my life together.

Step Four: Consider Sets
If you want to add color or pattern without sacrificing versatility, start with a matching set. A coordinating top and bottom can work like a jumpsuit or dress but still mix-and-match with the rest of your cluster. Perfect for when your top and bottom sizes differ—or you just want max style with minimum effort.

Final Tip: Plan Outfits by Day
If you’re tempted to throw in a “just in case” pile at the last minute—don’t. Instead, label your outfits by day. Use an app or snap pics with notes like: “Tuesday = sightseeing, wear linen tank + shorts + sandals.” Knowing exactly what you’re wearing helps you trust your packing—and stop second-guessing.
I know the struggle. I’ve lived the chaos of overpacking. But I also know the joy of arriving with a carry-on and a plan—and still looking fabulous every day. This system works. I promise.
Try it. Tweak it. And let me know in the comments: Are you a recovering overpacker too? What’s your best packing tip?
