Spring is just around the corner, and you know what that means—it’s time for a seasonal closet refresh! I always find that transitioning from winter to spring is the perfect opportunity to take a hard look at my wardrobe and decide what stays, what gets stored, and what needs to go. So today, I’m walking you through 14 things you should consider purging from your closet right now. Trust me, your wardrobe (and your sanity) will thank you!
1. Clothes That No Longer Fit
Let’s be honest with ourselves: if an item hasn’t fit in years and there’s no realistic plan to get back to that size, it’s time to let it go. Holding onto these pieces only creates unnecessary clutter and guilt. If you truly believe you’ll wear them again one day, store them elsewhere—but don’t let them take up prime real estate in your closet.
2. Worn-Out Basics
T-shirts, sweaters, jeans, and button-downs that have seen better days need to be assessed. Pilled fabrics, stretched-out waistbands, saggy knees—these don’t belong in a polished wardrobe. Your everyday essentials should look fresh, so replace what’s beyond repair.
3. Outdated Trends
Trendy pieces have a shelf life. If you bought something trendy three to five years ago and it’s no longer in style, it’s time to move on—unless, of course, it genuinely aligns with your personal style.
4. Uncomfortable or Worn-Out Shoes
Shoes that are falling apart or simply too painful to wear need to go. You deserve shoes that are stylish and comfortable. If a pair is salvageable, take them to a cobbler; otherwise, let them go.
5. Pieces You Haven’t Worn in Forever
I don’t believe in the “one-year rule” because sometimes we have special pieces that don’t get worn often. Instead, ask yourself: If I saw this in a store today, would I buy it again? If the answer is no, it’s time to part ways.
6. Multiples of the Same Item
If you have 35 black tops but only wear three of them, it’s time to edit. Keep your absolute favorites and donate the rest. Less clutter means easier outfit choices!
7. Clothes That Don’t Make You Feel Confident
If you put something on and immediately feel uncomfortable, awkward, or just off, it doesn’t belong in your closet. Your wardrobe should make you feel amazing, not self-conscious.
8. Clothes That Require Too Much Fuss
High-maintenance pieces that constantly need adjusting, special undergarments, or dry cleaning after every wear? Not worth the hassle. Stick to effortless, wearable pieces that fit seamlessly into your lifestyle.
9. Jewelry & Accessories You Never Wear
Jewelry can easily pile up, making it hard to find the pieces you actually love. Sort through your collection and keep only what you truly enjoy wearing. Store the rest or donate items you never reach for.
10. ‘Just in Case’ Clothes
We all have those “what if” pieces—outfits for hypothetical events that never seem to happen. If an item isn’t realistically going to be worn in the near future, store it separately or let it go.
11. Freebies & Promotional Items
How many free t-shirts from fun runs, fundraisers, or events do you really need? If you wouldn’t buy it yourself, don’t keep it.
12. Sentimental Pieces You Never Wear
I’m a sentimental person too, so I totally get it! But sentimental clothes don’t need to take up space in your working wardrobe. Store them in a box or keepsake bin—just don’t let them clutter your daily rotation.
13. Clothes That Don’t Match Your Current Lifestyle
If you’ve gone through a life transition—retirement, moving to a different climate, working from home—your wardrobe should reflect that. Keep only your absolute favorites from past phases and mix them into your new style.
14. Clothes & Accessories You’re Holding Onto Out of Guilt
Maybe it was expensive, maybe it was a gift, maybe you thought you’d love it—but if you don’t actually wear it, let it go. Your closet should serve you, not guilt-trip you!
