Trendy vs. Timeless: How to Spot the Differences & Shop Smart Over 50

February 6, 2025 By: Nada Manleycomment

One of the questions I get asked all the time is: How do I know what to invest in and what to save on? How do I recognize timeless pieces that will be wardrobe staples for years versus trendy pieces that might feel fresh now but won’t stand the test of time? That’s exactly what I’ll be breaking down for you today. I’m going to walk you through how to identify timeless investment pieces in your wardrobe (and in stores), and also how to spot trendy items—so you can shop them strategically and affordably, without overcommitting to styles that won’t have longevity.

You can shop everything in this video right here.

6 Tips for Identifying Timeless, Investment-Worthy Pieces

1. Prioritize Classic Silhouettes

Timeless pieces share a common trait: classic silhouettes that never go out of style. Some of my go-to examples include:

  • Tailored blazers
  • Straight-leg or wide-leg trousers (but not baggy)
  • A-line skirts
  • Well-cut jeans in a mid or high-rise
  • Shift or wrap dresses (with some exceptions!)

You can shop all of these pieces right here.

What keeps a piece from being classic? Extreme proportions! Anything extremely oversized or shrunken, super long or cropped, or overloaded with details (think balloon sleeves, exaggerated shoulder pads, and ultra-wide or super skinny pants) is more likely to date quickly. The best investment pieces are those that sit right in the middle—not too tight, not too loose, and free from excessive detailing.

2. Stick to a Neutral, Versatile Color Palette

Now, don’t get me wrong—I love color, and I encourage using it! But when it comes to investment pieces, sticking to neutral and versatile colors ensures you get the most wear for your money. Some great foundational colors include:

  • Black
  • Navy
  • Camel
  • White
  • Gray
  • Earth tones (chocolate brown, deep olive, taupe, etc.)

You can shop all of these pieces right here.

Neon, bright pastels, unusual shades, or “it” colors of the season tend to lack longevity. If you want to buy that blazer, choose it in a classic hue like Eclipse rather than a trendy seasonal shade like Crocus. This will help extend the life of your wardrobe staples!

3. Opt for Minimalist, Refined Details

The simpler the details, the less likely a piece is to date. Some timeless design elements include:

✅ Clean lines
✅ Subtle contrast stitching
✅ Structured seams
✅ Classic buttons

On the flip side, these trendy details can quickly date an item:

❌ Frills and ruffles
❌ Large logo placements
❌ Heavy distressing, sequins, or embellishments
❌ Fringe (sadly, one of my personal favorites!)

If you want longevity, lean toward sleek, simple, and polished designs.

4. Invest in High-Quality, Natural Fabrics

Here’s a frustrating truth: quality and price are no longer as directly linked as they used to be. You can spend a lot of money and still end up with low-quality fabric, so it’s important to know what to look for.

High-quality fabrics include:

  • Wool, cashmere, silk, and linen
  • Well-made cottons (like poplin and twill)
  • High-quality synthetic blends that mimic natural fibers

Fabrics to avoid:

  • Cheap synthetics that pill and wear out quickly
  • Faux leather that cracks
  • Sheer mesh or heavy rib knits that lose their shape

One trick? Check the seams, button stitching, and fabric texture in person. A well-made piece should feel substantial and hold up to close inspection.

5. Choose Classic Accessories & Footwear

If you could only invest in one category, make it accessories! A structured handbag, a great pair of shoes, or timeless jewelry can elevate your entire look. Some worth-investing-in staples:

✅ Simple leather handbags & structured totes
✅ Refined ballet flats & loafers
✅ Sleek ankle boots

What to avoid if longevity is the goal? Chunky platform shoes, ultra-pointed or squared-off toes, oversized statement belts, and micro-mini or gargantuan bags. These styles tend to come and go quickly.

6. Understand the Five Style Categories

Every piece in your wardrobe falls into one of these five categories. Knowing which category something belongs in will help you shop smarter!

Dated
Classic
Modern Classic
Trendy
Personality

1️⃣ Dated – Pieces that were once trendy or classic but now feel out of style. Example: A trendy piece from 5 years ago that no longer looks fresh.

2️⃣ Classic – Ultra-simple, timeless staples. Example: A straight-leg black pant with a perfect fit.

3️⃣ Modern Classic – The sweet spot! Timeless pieces with a modern twist. Example: A structured blazer with an updated fit.

4️⃣ Trendy – Fun, but fleeting. Example: A cargo-style jean with oversized pockets.

5️⃣ Personality Pieces – Unique statement pieces that reflect your style, but aren’t necessarily trendy. Example: A vintage jacket with cool embroidery.

If your wardrobe is mostly modern classics, with a few carefully selected trends and personality pieces, you’ll have a stylish closet that stands the test of time!

The 10 Wardrobe Essentials

1. The Classic White Button-Down Shirt

A crisp white button-down is as timeless as it gets. It’s clean, polished, and endlessly versatile—wear it tucked, untucked, layered, or knotted. But not all white button-downs are created equal.

  • Dated: Knit versions or slub fabrics (like the ones from 10+ years ago) with roll-tab sleeves look outdated and have been out of style for a long time.
  • Classic: A tailored, fitted white button-down with clean seams. It’s the perfect layering piece and never looks out of place.
  • Modern Classic: A slightly oversized but not boxy fit—just enough drape for a chic, effortless look without drowning you in fabric.
  • Trendy: Cropped button-downs, bubble hems, ruffled or voluminous sleeves, or embellishments like sparkles and studs. These are fun but won’t stay in style forever.
  • Personality Piece: Unique cuts, unexpected openings, or minimal yet distinctive details. A white tuxedo-style shirt, for example, is an elegant statement without feeling trendy.

2. The Perfect Pair of Jeans

Denim is a closet essential, but not every pair of jeans will stand the test of time. The silhouette, wash, and details all determine if your jeans are classic or on their way out.

  • Dated: Light-wash, super skinny jeans styled in a way that screams 2010s. While skinnies may be making a comeback, it won’t be in these exact styles.
  • Classic: A simple, straight-leg jean in a dark wash—this is as timeless as it gets.
  • Modern Classic: A slightly higher rise and a relaxed straight-to-wide leg fit. These offer a sleeker, updated version of the classic style.
  • Trendy: Barrel-leg, cargo-pocket jeans, or designs with excessive seam detailing and contrast stitching. These have their moment but won’t stick around.
  • Personality Piece: A slouchy, lightly distressed pair that aligns with your personal style—think Levi’s 501s, Free People’s cool cuts, or something uniquely shaped but not aggressively trendy.

3. The Tailored Blazer

A well-fitted blazer instantly elevates an outfit, but the wrong details can make it look outdated.

  • Dated: Cropped, fitted blazers with ¾ sleeves or boxy knits that lack shape.
  • Classic: A single-breasted, single-button tailored blazer in a neutral color like black, navy, or camel. It’s structured but not tight, ensuring versatility for years to come.
  • Modern Classic: Double-breasted blazers in timeless plaids or structured, slightly longer cuts that add a contemporary touch while staying polished.
  • Trendy: Hourglass blazers that are super fitted at the waist, gargantuan oversized blazers, and cropped blazers—these styles are eye-catching but will eventually cycle out.
  • Personality Piece: A classic blazer with a unique print, embroidered details, or a standout cut that reflects your aesthetic without being overly trendy.

4. The Little Black Dress (or Your Favorite Neutral)

Your version of a go-to, elegant dress should feel timeless while also suiting your personal style.

  • Classic: A simple, structured dress with clean lines—think Lafayette 148’s timeless styles.
  • Modern Classic: A shirt dress, knit dress, or blazer-style coat dress. These silhouettes are fresh but won’t fall out of favor anytime soon.
  • Trendy: Dresses with cutouts, extreme volume, excessive ruffles, or super-tight fits. These can be fun but are short-lived trends.
  • Personality Piece: A minimalist yet eye-catching dress with asymmetric buttons, sculptural details, or unexpected but timeless elements.

5. The Trench Coat

A trench coat is one of the best investments you can make—if you pick the right one!

  • Classic & Modern Classic: The Burberry-style trench coat—mid-calf length, slightly oversized, structured but not stiff.
  • Trendy: Cropped trenches, ultra-drapey styles, and silky materials. While fashionable, they lack the longevity of a true investment piece.
  • Personality Piece: A trench with a subtle pattern, pleated detailing, or a structured yet unique silhouette—something special but not trendy.

6. The Timeless Sweater

A well-made sweater is a wardrobe workhorse, but some styles don’t hold up over time.

  • Personality Piece: Statement sweaters with artistic prints, interesting textures, or color-blocked details that fit your aesthetic.

  • Dated: Super fitted, stretchy dress pants that look more like leggings than trousers. These styles often lack structure and don’t hold up well over time.
  • Classic: A slim, straight-leg pant in wool or a seasonless crepe. Simple, structured, and polished, this style will always be in fashion.
  • Modern Classic: A flat-front, slightly wide-leg trouser with a high-waist fit. This updated take on the classic trouser has an elongating effect and offers versatility.
  • Trendy: Overly voluminous, pleated, baggy pants or exaggerated flare silhouettes. These styles have been trending for the past few seasons, but they won’t remain wardrobe staples in the long run.
  • Personality Piece: A classic trouser with unique draping, an asymmetrical waist, or an unexpected design detail—like a scarf tie at the hip or a subtle textural contrast. These details make the pants stand out without feeling trendy.

Final Thoughts

By keeping these six principles in mind, you’ll be able to build a wardrobe that feels fresh, modern, and—most importantly—timeless. Whether you’re shopping for a tailored blazer, the perfect pair of jeans, or a classic little black dress, ask yourself: Does this piece fit into the modern classic category? Is it versatile? Is the quality high enough to last? If the answer is yes, it’s a worthy investment.
