Forget Fading Into the Background—It’s Time to Stand Out
By the time you’ve hit your 80s, you’re a living legend. You’ve built a life filled with wisdom, stories, and experiences, and your style should reflect that. Forget outdated fashion “rules” that tell you to shrink into the background with dull colors and practical, forgettable outfits. This is the decade to be bold, expressive, and unapologetically stylish. Whether you want to turn heads with statement coats, mix unexpected prints, or wear pearls to the grocery store, these ten style rules will help you embrace fashion on your own terms—because at this stage in life, the only rule is to wear what makes you feel fabulous.
Dress like an icon. Not a grandmother.
🛑 Old Rule: “Dress appropriately for your age.”
✅ New Rule: Dress like a walking masterpiece.
While I think dressing appropriately for the occasion is good manners, I don’ tbelieve in many of the rules of dressing appropriately for your age, especially if appropriate = boring. Lean into your personal style at this stage and commit to wearing clothes that truly feel like you, whether that involves a wardrobe full of statement pieces or a chic and minimal look.

Always Be Overdressed—Life is the Occasion
🛑 Old Rule: “Save your best clothes for special occasions.”
✅ New Rule: Every day is a special occasion—dress for it.
Dressing down day after day can be depressing and make us feel like we are in a never ending cycle of stretch pants. Instead, use every day as an opportunity to wear your favorite clothes. Or invest in some new favorites to make every day special.
Occasion Stores: The Row, J.Crew, Saks, Anthropologie

Wear More Jewelry Than Necessary
🛑 Old Rule: “Keep accessories minimal.”
✅ New Rule: If you’re not jingling, add more.
Forget less is more. For a maximalist, more has always been more, so if that’s your style, don’t be afraid to layer standout pieces to make your own statement. This is about using your favorite pieces to create a look that is uniquely your own.

Wear Your Hair (and a Hat) Like They’re Crowns
🛑 Old Rule: “Hats are for old-fashioned women.”
✅ New Rule: A hat is a symbol of power—wear it proudly.
Your hair can be whatever you want, as long as it’s not boring. Whether you choose to color it or wear it silver, choose a hairstyle that is modern, chic and cool. And consider hats and other hair accessories to express your personal style and potentially conceal thinning.

Trade Practical Shoes for Statement Shoes
🛑 Old Rule: Prioritize comfort over style.”
✅ New Rule: “Your shoes should have personality.”
Shoes can be problematic as we get older, but I guarantee that your favorite shoe brand has shoes that are equally comfortable to your go-to pair, but with more personality. If your shoes don’t add flattery or style to an outfit, consider switching them out for a more expressive pair.

Forget matching. Mismatch your way to chic.
🛑 Old Rule: “Everything should match.”
✅ New Rule: “Mix elements to create your own look.”
Pairing unexpected elements adds personality and creativity to your outfit, and this has been the prevailing aesthetic in style for the last few years. It gives you an opportunity to mix and match your clothes in new and creative ways and get more use out of them.
Creative Brands: Mango, Zara, ASOS, Banana Republic

Play With Opposites.

Stop Hiding. Choose Conversation Pieces.
🛑 Old Rule: “Keep it Classic.”
✅ New Rule: “If someone doesn’t ask where you got it, you’re doing it wrong.”
Nothing feels more energizing or gives your style a boost more than finding conversation pieces that you love. They can add the finishing touch to an otherwise simple outfit.
Conversation Brands: Frances Valentine Kate Spade La Double J Tuckernuck Boden

Refresh Your Color Palette
🛑 Old Rule: “Stick to safe colors.”
✅ New Rule: “Your colors should reflect your coloring and personality.”
Chances are, even if your hair is its original color, your coloring has changed, and your wardrobe color palette should reflect that. Evaluate your best colors and build your wardrobe around them.
Colorful Brands: Boden, Tuckernuck, Kit, J. Crew

Spend On the Things Nobody Sees
🛑 Old Rule: “Save your nice things for when you are out.”
✅ New Rule: “You deserve to feel lovely at home.”
If you are dressing in your scrubbiest clothes at home, it’s time to step it up. You and the people you live with deserve your best, so make sure that your pajamas, underwear, and other intimates are beautiful. Dressing for yourself even when nobody can see you is the biggest confidence boost.

I bellieve a Woman should always look like a woman. Too many older women look too casual and sloppy. I dress like I have some place to go and always wear jewelry and clothes mostly dresses to look interesting and not like other retired ladies. I am 91 years old.

Your comment made my day! I’m so thrilled that this post resonated with you and sparked a fresh perspective on your wardrobe. Retirement is such a wonderful opportunity for reinvention, and you’re absolutely right—it should never mean becoming invisible! It’s about embracing who you are now with confidence and joy. I love that you’re taking a fresh look at your closet. I hope that you continue to have fun with your style!

84 and I loved it! Have had my colors redone every 10 years for 40 years. Really reinforced my approach to life. I’m still working part time as a military instructor teaching enhanced interrogation to military interrogators. Life’s short I try to find joy every day and I dress for it and for myself ! I buy my shoes at Talbots and Nordstrom and they are my signature and I dress in a classic style with jewelry EVERY DAY. If I’m in the US I dress down and plain in Africa and the Middle East to not be noticed. You set a great example for all ages. Keep up you great contributions to women

This is my all time favorite post!!! You nailed it Nada. I’m am literally going to go back into my closet and reevaluate my wardrobe – so many of these rules have been dominating my life since I retired and now I know why I have not been feeling like my former self…retirement shouldn’t be equated with becoming invisible – it should be a time for reinventing and restoring. Thank you so much for this! (By the way, I’m only 69 but your blog is apropos to any woman of a certain age!)
