The New Rules of Dressing in Your 60s (2025 Edition)

January 28, 2025 By: Nada Manleycomment

Decades Week continues, and today we’re diving into the stylish, fabulous, and wonderful 60s! Whether you’re in your 60s, approaching them, or just curious about what I have to say on the topic, I encourage you to stick around. I’ve got some amazing tips to help you lean into your personal style and feel more confident in your fashion choices.

1. Stop Dressing for Your Age—Dress for Your Mood

Gone are the days when we had strict rules about how to dress at certain ages. The idea of “age-appropriate dressing” has faded, and the boundaries that once defined our style no longer exist. That means it’s time to dress for your energy, not your age!

Nobody knows your exact age or weight, so there’s no reason to limit yourself based on those things. Instead, focus on creating outfits that reflect your mood and energy levels.

  • On low-key days, wear comfortable, cozy outfits that support you.
  • On high-energy days, wear pieces that lift you up, spark joy, and make you feel your best.

Outfit Idea: A sequin jacket paired with a graphic tee, leather pants or cool jeans, and statement sneakers. This type of outfit can instantly elevate your mood, boost your confidence, and make your day more exciting.

2. Maximalist or Minimalist? Pick Your Jewelry Style and Own It

By the time you’re in your 60s, it’s time to pick a lane—are you a minimalist or a maximalist when it comes to jewelry?

  • Minimalists: Focus on sleek, simple, high-quality pieces. If you wear fewer pieces, make sure each one carries weight in your outfit.
  • Maximalists: Embrace the “more is more” philosophy! Layer bracelets, necklaces, and bold rings to create an eclectic, artistic look.

Outfit Idea: A neutral wrap dress layered with chunky bangles, stacked rings, oversized hoop earrings, and layered necklaces. This simple outfit becomes elevated and unique with the right jewelry choices.

3. If It’s Not Luxe, It Shouldn’t Be in Your Closet

I don’t mean expensive—I mean high-quality fabrics that feel fabulous on your skin. Whether it’s cotton, linen, silk, wool, or cashmere, the way fabric feels against your skin matters more than ever.

Say goodbye to cheap, scratchy fabrics that make you fidget all day and invest in quality pieces that look and feel amazing.

Outfit Idea: A cashmere sweater paired with silky wide-leg trousers, a structured leather tote, and low-heeled mules. This look is cozy yet polished—perfect for everyday luxury.

4. Stop Trying to Look Younger—Look More Interesting

Instead of chasing youth, focus on developing your signature style. Forget about trends that cater to 20-year-olds and curate a wardrobe that feels like YOU.

Outfit Idea: A patterned blazer, tailored pants, heeled ankle boots, and bold-framed glasses. A signature accessory—whether it’s a hat, sunglasses, or a statement necklace—adds intrigue and personality.

5. Rock a Bold, Surprising Hairstyle

Confident woman walks street, wears fashionable clothes, plaid jacket, pants, leather bag, ochre knitted scarf, loafers. Fashion trend of autumn or spring

Your hairstyle should be an extension of your personal style. Forget the outdated “rules” about how women over 60 should wear their hair and go for a look that feels fresh, modern, and uniquely you.

  • A short, edgy pixie cut can be effortlessly cool.
  • Long, flowing silver or platinum hair can be a striking statement.
  • A choppy, layered bob can be playful and chic.

Outfit Idea: A metallic leather jacket, black jeans, and moto boots to complement a short, edgy haircut. Or, for a more romantic look, pair a flowing maxi dress with cowboy boots to highlight soft, boho waves.

6. Don’t (Necessarily) Match Bags & Shoes

Why It’s Controversial: We were all taught that bags and shoes should match—but that rule is outdated! Matching your shoes and bag can look classic and polished, but it’s not a requirement. Instead, try contrasting colors, patterns, or textures to add interest to your outfit. A bold colorful bag or metallic clutch with sneakers can make your look more dynamic. Old Rule: Shoes and bags should always match. New Rule: Mismatched accessories tell a more interesting story.

Outfit Idea: Try pairing a neutral tailored coat with snakeskin loafers and a bright crossbody bag—perhaps in fuchsia, red, or yellow—to make a neutral outfit pop. Or, if you’re wearing classic jeans and a white blouse, opt for metallic sneakers and a funky patterned tote to add personality to your look.

7. Vintage Finds Are Your Secret Weapon

In a world of cookie-cutter fast fashion, vintage pieces help you stand out and express your personal style.

  • Hunt for vintage designer coats, statement bags, and unique jewelry.
  • Vintage means better craftsmanship and quality, so you’re investing in pieces that last.

Outfit Idea: A vintage embroidered blazer worn over a silk cami, jeans, and kitten heels—effortless, stylish, and totally unique.

8. Try a No-Makeup Makeup Look

Heavy makeup can be aging, but a fresh, glowy look can enhance your features and keep you looking radiant.

  • Opt for a tinted sunscreen, a pop of blush, and filled-in brows.
  • Stick to hydrating, creamy textures rather than powders.

Outfit Idea: A cashmere cardigan, relaxed jeans, and white sneakers—a minimalist, everyday look that pairs perfectly with fresh, glowing skin.

8. Forget Matching Outfits—Mismatch Your Way to Chic

Why It’s Controversial: We were all taught that outfits should match—but modern style is about mixing things up! Break up two-piece suits and mix them with different pieces. Pair unexpected elements, like a tailored blazer with a flowy maxi dress. Blend dressy and casual, like a silk blouse with joggers or a sequin skirt with sneakers. Old Rule: Outfits should always match or coordinate. New Rule: Mismatched outfits can be chic, stylish, and modern.

Outfit Idea: Try a structured tailored jacket with a bold printed skirt, chunky combat boots, and mixed-metal jewelry. Or go for a striped tee with plaid trousers, a trench coat, bright sneakers, and a vintage brooch.Cohesion is overrated. Personality is everything! Try mixing:

  • Vintage and modern
  • Dressy and casual
  • Unexpected colors and prints

9. Combine Dressy With Casual

Stop saving your “nice” clothes for special occasions. Wear them now!

  • Pair your silk blouses with jeans.
  • Rock your sequined skirt with sneakers.

Outfit Idea: A satin blazer with a white tee, distressed jeans, and sneakers—elevated but effortlessly cool.

Final Thoughts: Make Your 60s Your Most Stylish Decade Yet!

At the end of the day, style is about self-expression—not rules. Whether you love bold prints, bright colors, or timeless neutrals, lean into what makes you feel beautiful and confident.
