Full disclosure: I’m not a scarf person. I don’t know why. My mom never wore them and I’ve never really worn them. I have had short periods in my life where I’ve liked a specific scarf worn a specific way (always the long thin scarves) but as a rule, I like scarves more in theory than in reality. On me.
On other people, however, I love them. As a personal stylist, I have used scarves for years to add elegance, color and interest to outfits. I love their ability to completely transform a look, and how many different ways there are to wear one to add just the right accent to any outfit.
However, as with any category, there are good scarves and bad scarves. Modern ways to wear scarves and dated ways to wear scarves. Today, I’m going to break down the rules of scarf buying and tying in 2024.

Perfection is instantly aging. If we want to wear a scarf over 50 in a way that looks fresh and modern, we need to make it look effortless.
Here, my do’s and don’ts of scarf buying and tying in 2024. You can shop all of these scarves here.
Don’t wear a classic scarf in a classic way
It’s all about balance. If the scarf is classic, wear it in a modern and relaxed way. If the scarf is really modern, you can wear it in a more classic way. But classic + classic for scarves is aging.

Do be creative.
Aside from the traditional ties, there are so many more creative and inventive ways to tie a scarf. Here are a few examples.

Do try a big cozy scarf.
These are a major trend for 2024. If you don’t want to spend the money on the pricey Acne version, there are plenty of affordable options.

Don’t wear a scarf over one shoulder.
Most of the time, the look is too stuffy and too dated. The Valentino version, a modern twist on this, looks really cool, however.

Do choose a scarf with 3 or more of your wardrobe colors.
A scarf that ties together 3 or more of the colors in your wardrobe color palette will tie all of your outfits together.

Don’t put a brooch on it.
Wearing a brooch on a scarf, or pinning one to a lapel while wearing a scarf, looks prim and dated. So do the scarf rings that were popular years ago.

Don’t choose equestrian nautical or paisley scarves.
These look so classic, and can definitely give an aging look.

Do choose modern scarves.
They are much easier to style and much less likely to look frumpy.

Do wrap a scarf around you multiple times.
It looks effortless and undone.

Wear a scarf on your head.
This is my favorite way to wear a scarf. It looks fresh and modern and can work with a variety of style personalities.

Do wear it as an accessory.
As a belt, a bracelet, or looked around the handle of your bag, there are so many ways your scarf can double as a different accessory.
