How To Create Everyday Outfits That Feel Like YOU Over 50

July 29, 2024 By: Nada Manleycomment

All dressed up and nowhere to go. Does anyone remember that old saying? I think many of us feel that way. When we put on clothes that we love, clothes that we WANT to wear, we feel overdressed for our casual lifestyles. But when we put on the clothes that seem to “suit” our laid-back lifestyles more, we don’t feel cute and definitely don’t feel like we’re expressing our personal style. It’s a daily struggle that many of us face.

How do we dress for our lives, and still dress for ourselves.

In today’s video, I’m going to share 3 methods of feeling like yourself and infusing your own personal style into your outfits, no matter how casual. They are different approaches to a problem that we all share, and are designed to help you make the most of your wardrobe.

You can shop everything in the examples here. All of my dresses can be found here.

You can find them all in today’s video.

Method 1: Use Your Words

This first method is often the most creative, and involves assigning words and style “elements” to the types of outfits that you love, those that truly suit your personal style. Then you find a way to bring those same elements into casual outfits.

For example, if your words are feminine, colorful, bold, and glam, you would find ways to bring one or more of those style elements into each of your casual outfits.

Your outfits might look like this. These looks are varying degrees of casual, but they all have glam elements (color, shine, femininity).

The easiest way to do this, as I’ve shared in the past, is through accessories. You can take the most basic and casual outfit, and add your personal style through accessories, turning it into a fun and personality-filled look. Here are some examples using the same basic starter outfit of a white tee and jeans. I count jackets as an accessory because they have the ability to completely transform an outfit.

Method 2: Wear Your Clothes

This method is simple, but not necessarily easy. It involves wearing your favorite clothes, wherever you’re going and whatever you’re doing. It means that you’re not going to “save” your favorite clothes for a special occasion, but make the most of the lovely things you own and wear them anytime you want, to nowhere in particular.

I do this all the time. I wear my cute clothes to the grocery store, to my casual church services, to dinner at nowhere in particular. I just wear them all the time, everywhere I go. This doesn’t mean that I’m wearing cocktail dresses all the time, but it does mean that I wear my nice dresses anytime I want. Here are some of my regular outfits, which I shared in a recent video.

Method 3: Dress It Down

The last strategy is to take your nicest pieces and turn them into more casual outfits by combining them with more casual accessories. So, essentially, the opposite of Method 1. Take something dressy and make it more casual. Here are varying levels of dressiness using the same dress and just switching out the completer pieces and accessories.

What do you think of these methods for making the most of your wardrobe, and bringing your personal style into everyday outfits? Which of these strategies will you try? Let’s chat in the comments!
