Shorts are having a moment, and not just because it’s June. In recent years, with the return of the shorts suit, tailored shorts, and other elevated shorts styles, this casual summertime staple has seen a bit of an upgrade. And not a second too soon, because most of us need to figure out our short situation before the temps skyrocket, because who wants to live in jeans all summer long? I definitely don’t.
However, just because they’re cool, doesn’t mean that they are necessarily easy-breezy. I mean, for many of us, shorts put our legs squarely on display for the first time in months/years. Add to that other fit, body, and styling challenges, and, well, the short of it is that shorts can be hard. (Sorry. Couldn’t help myself!)
In today’s video, I share some strategies for picking the best shorts over 50, plus I share my 10 favorites of the season.
Picking the Perfect Pair

There are 4 things to look at for a pair of shorts that is both flattering and modern. They are:
- Length: It’s important to know the right inseam length to pick your best pair of shorts. They can range from a couple of inches on the short side to 11″ for very long legs or very long shorts. The ideal length for most women is a mid-thigh length that hits just where your thigh starts to narrow.
- Width: The leg opening of the shorts should be wide enough to give your legs some room, but narrow enough to be flattering and not boxy. Many brands give you the leg opening dimensions.
- Tailored Waistband: A tailored (not elastic or smocked) waistband will give you nice waist definition and a sleek smooth line.
- Flat Front: Choose a subtle pleat or flat front short for the cleanest and simplest profile.
