How To Dress in Your 80s in 2024

June 8, 2024 By: Nada Manleycomment

You are in your 80s, and fashion is your oyster. It’s a time when many women rediscover the joy of expressing themselves through clothing, embracing new styles, and redefining what it means to be stylish. With the potential for a more relaxed pace of life, you find yourself with the freedom to dress in a way that truly reflects your personality and preferences. This newfound freedom allows you to explore different looks, experiment with colors, patterns, and silhouettes, and ultimately, have fun with fashion in a way that you might not have experienced before.

During Decades Week, where the focus has been on elevating ourstyle, this rings especially true for women in their 80s. It’s about leveling up not just in terms of aesthetics but also in prioritizing fit, quality, and comfort.

So, let’s take a closer look at the fashion choices of stylish women in their 80s in 2024 – a celebration of individuality, creativity, and personal style.

Stores

Stores that came up over and over for women in their 80s include Ann Taylor, Loft, Quince, J. Crew, Nordstrom, Talbots, Chicos, J. Jill, The Bay, Von Maur and Reitmans.

Watch out for fun clothes.

Skip clothes that have too much going on.

Don’t hide behind flowy fabrics.

Tailored is better, as is defining your waist.

Find your signature look.

Wearing the same thing every day isn’t a sign that you are boring or lazy. It’s a sign of personal style.

Add structure to your clothes

Shapewear, shoulder pads, tucking and tailoring can all add structure and help your clothes look better.

Skip novelty shoes and bags

“Fun” shoes and bags with funny or cutesy motifs are not elegant and are not a stylish choice.

Stick to natural fabrics whenever possible.

Natural fabrics, even if they get a little wrinkled over the course of the day, will still look more elegant most of the time than a synthetic look with no wrinkles.

Try dainty jewelry

Dainty jewelry looks more modern, flattering, and elegant than lots of fun or funky jewelry. The exception of course is a piece or two of beautiful elevated and elegant statement jewelry, like a gold cuff or a great pair of hoops.

Find your best lengths.

Take pictures of daily outfits to determine your best length for tops, skirts, sleeves, etc. or consider the Fashion Fit Formula.

Choose modern hair and makeup

Splurge on the best quality accessories.

Elegant and elevated bags, shoes, and jewelry will take any outfit from simple to chic.

Avoid too-sweet styles.

Cutesy and too-sweet styles do not look sophisticated at this stage. For some reason, brands like to add really sweet details like tiny floral embroidery to outfis aimed at women over 50.
