There are things that we buy. And there are things that we wear. One of the distinctions that I talk about so much on my channel and in all my content is the need to zero in on those items that are going to be in the heaviest rotations in our wardrobes.
These items are mine.
When we learn to separate the new go-to, must-have, essential or whatever you want to call them items from the ones that are just taking up space, that’s when the magic happens. That’s when you can finally have the curated and clutter-free wardrobe of your dreams. The number of items doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that you wear all of it. Everything we own can generally be referred to as our closet, but the things we wear are our wardrobe. There’s a huge difference.
I wear these pieces (and similar ones from my wardrobe) weekly, and in many cases daily. I reach for them all of the time because they check the essential boxes for me of comfort, quality, fit, flattery, and relevance to my lifestyle. These pieces are versatile, chic, and always make me feel beautiful. What more could we want from our clothes?
Here, 10 items I wear on repeat all summer long.

A Versatile Dress
The key with a piece like this is to find a dress that can go almost anywhere. It’s actually pretty tricky. This lipstick pink dress is my summertime version. I can dress this up a little and wear it to a casual wedding, add feminine accessories for a brunch or bridal shower, wear it to church and the beach and on vacation and on a random Tuesday when I want to be cool but still stylish.
It also checks 2 of the boxes that many women have as they get older: It keeps you cool while covering your upper arms and your legs.

A Linen Shirtdress
A classic shirtdress is feminine, flattering, and essential in my book. It can be dressed up or down and will never go out of style. However, a flattering version can be hard to find. Many are oversized, baggy, and hard to style, so I was thrilled when I found this super flattering version that checks all the boxes for me.

An Everyday Dress
By definition, the dress I reach for the most often. This needs to be easy peasy and also cute. It should be comfortable, lightweight, and not require any special undergarments. I wear this one on a weekly basis.

The White Sundress
As quintessentially summer as the perfect pair of sandals, a white sundress is a feminine summer staple that has suddenly become easy to find, something I’m thankful for after years with a shortage of sundresses on the market.
Here’s my current favorite white sundress.

Linen Pants & Shorts
A pull-on style in linen works with tanks, tees and other summery tops, as well as a coverup over your favorite bathing suit. They just exude laid-back summer style to me.

Breezy Button-Down
This double-duty staple works as a layering piece as well as a shirt. It can be the perfect lightweight topper for tanks and sleeveless dresses, worn out with leggings or tucked into pants, and even serve as a bathing suit coverup.
Here’s my favorite.

Cotton Sweater
The perfect cozy but not too cozy layer for cool nights, or for slipping on over bathing suits and tank tops, the cotton fisherman sweater is a classic staple. Another cotton essential is a cardigan, preferably at waist length, that can double as a top when buttoned-up.

Cotton or Linen Jacket
Another essential summer-friendly topper is a structured jacket, which works as the perfect topper for anything flowy, particularly dresses, but also works well with shorts, pants and jeans. It’s a lighter weight alternative to a denim jacket.
This style can be found here.

Ponte Knit Travel Set
A travel outfit needs to be comfy and chic, and this one features a lovely structured short-sleeve top and glamorous wide-leg pants in a super practical and still polished ponte knit. These pants come in a variety of colors and lengths, too.
Ponte top and pants and optional but always recommended convertible blazer.

Dressy Shorts
In addition to a casual pair of linen or denim shorts, a polished pair in crepe is always a good idea and offers a cooler alternative to trousers on hot days. Choose a length that works for you, but I recommend the mid-thigh length for most women.

What do you think of my go-to’s? And what would you add to my list of summer essentials? Let’s discuss in the comments!

Hi Brenda! Thanks for the email! They will be shipping to Canada soon! I know that is such a pain! I do have a catalog of Canadian brands, but may I also suggest you check brands like & Other Stories and Mango for similar items. They are international retailers and should be easy to find in Canada. Here’s the Canadian catalog. https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/306H&SP2B3

It would not be too big! A little give is fine. :)

Also like the shirt dress but the waist is 25 and I am a 24 wondering if it would be to big.
Wendy Miller says
Like the olive green shorts. I feel the size would be to big for and not much of a fan for polyester.

Hello Nada,
Recently I found your website, Nada Manley. Being older myself, 78 years old, the content seemed to be speaking to me. Today’s segment, Summer Essentials, is exactly what I have needed. The problem is that Quince does not yet ship to Canada.
Does Quince have any store locations? Is Quince only an online retailer?
Thank you,
Brenda
