We’ve all been cautioned to death about outfits that are matchy-matchy, but sometimes a girl just needs an easy no-brainer outfit that is actually stylish and elegant and polished but also as easy to put on as sweats.
One of my clients said what she really wants is Garanimals, but make it fashion.
Even those of us who’ve cautioned against overly-matchy looks for years have never been able to deny the elegance and quiet luxury of a perfectly coordinated outfit. (Matchy-matchy, by the way, refers to statement pieces worn with statement pieces, never classics worn with classics. But I digress).
So what to do if you want the ease of a two-piece set but you also want it to be modern and chic? You look for sets with these qualities:
- Solid
- Neutral
- Tailored
The reason that many sets are awful is that they are either skintight (I’m looking at you leggings and tank) or gargantuan (sweats big enough to double as shelter). The most elegant and flattering choices always FIT, and are tailored without being tight or oversized.
Keeping it solid and neutral, at least at the beginning, makes it easy and ensures that you are choosing pieces you’ll love and wear for years to come.
Here, my LilySilk capsule wardrobe filled with stylish and versatile sets that also work equally well as separates.

And now, for the outfits.
Loungewear
We all want to lounge around in something comfy, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but what if we can be supremely comfortable but also chic! I love the new ribbed sweater lounge sets (rather than sweatshirt). A sweater knit elevates loungewear so much, and feels just as cozy. This elevated set from LilySilk is easy enough to hang out at home and elegant enough to meet a friend for drinks.

Sweater + Pants Set
Spring sweaters have so much potential for disaster. Between the Easter egg colors and the itty-bitty flowers, it looks like brands are trying to dress us as toddlers. (BTW, I ADORE pastels, and feel jealous of women who are flattered by those colors, but when the color is sweet, the shape should be sharp). Instead of the syrupy sweet and also dated stripes on this set, with the matching pants, stick with a modern classic, a striped lady jacket, with a solid pair of neutral pants.

Bad Pant Sets
Ahh! The chiffon pant set. I have railed against these flowy style killers for YEARS, and yet there they are, still taunting me from clothing racks and websites. Why???? I don’t understand the rationale behind putting us in flowy, shapeless layers that add pounds and years.
Every single woman looks better in tailored pieces. Regardless of size, age, or height. If your clothes fit, you will look better, slimmer, more elegant.
If the ease of a pant set intrigues you, find a tailored version in a dark neutral, like this one from LilySilk, and you will wear it for years.

Striped Shirt Outfit
This is another reason why I’ve been ranting about sets. It’s the striped shirts with the matching tee or tank worn underneath. Why? I don’t understand how these keep slipping past my sensors and making it into stores. They are dated and matronly and just not at all chic. If you love stripes, like I do, but worry that a horizontal stripe won’t be your friend, try a chic and timeless vertical striped blouse like this one from LilySilk paired with neutral pants. Simple, classic, and elegant.

A Few More Outfits
And because this is a capsule, all of these pieces go together to create multiple stylish outfits.

Hi Karen! Thank you! That is definitely frustrating! Let me see if I can find those in a broader size range for you!

I love these looks! Unfortunately my size is the issue. I measured myself (FINALLY) and am just out of range on the suggested sizes. Except the striped blouse; I could get one in my size! Now to find the other capsule pieces!

I can see why you would be confused! LOL. It’s the blouses that come pre-tied, with the little strips of fabric. They always hang too low and are not cute or versatile. But there is nothing wrong with tying a shirt at the waist to create a flattering shape. :)

YHi Nada, this is a beautiful collection. I have a question. I am allergic to wool. Are the wool blend casual pants itchy?
Thanks
Linda

Ok Nada I see you in a front tie blouse????
