You guys know I’m a style rebel, right. But rules are rules for a reason. (Now I sound like the mom that I am). Seriously, though, having guidelines and “rules” can give us clarity and ease and, most of all, confidence when it comes to choosing, wearing, and pairing clothes.
Sometimes, we just want to put on the jacket that works, and skip the trial and error. In today’s video, I’m going to share some style rules that can really simplify getting dressed and answer questions like:
- Which jacket works with this outfit?
- How do I pick the right neckline?
- Am I wearing too many pops of color? Or too few?
Today, I’m going to share some of the finer points of fit, flattery, and outfit creation. As always, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but if you feel like there’s something a little off with your outfit, one of these rules can help you tweak it.
Rule 1: Pair a Long Dress With A Short Jacket, and a Long Jacket With A Short Dress (or Pants)
When it comes to pairing longer skirts or dresses, always opt for a short jacket. Long over long can create a shapeless look, so embrace balance by pairing longer pieces with cropped jackets for a flattering silhouette. Flowy cardigans over flowy dresses? Not a winning combination. Instead, opt for structured cardigans to add balance to your outfit. Remember, structure brings cohesion and polish to any ensemble.

Rule 2: Waist Length Tops Are Magical
Waist-length tops are a game-changer. They offer waist definition without the need for tucking, making them perfect for effortlessly chic looks. Know the measurements of your favorite tops to shop with confidence and ensure the perfect fit every time.
Simply find a top that hits you at the waist or high hip, and measure from shoulder to hem. Keep that measurement on your phone for future reference.

Know Your Clothing Measurements, Not Just Your Body Measurements
Rule 3: Play with Pops of Color
Whether you prefer a subtle hint or a bold statement, pops of color can elevate any outfit. But remember, moderation is key. Choose one or two focal points for your pops of color to avoid overwhelming your look. Or go head to toe color. Anything in between (i.e. 4-5 pops of color) looks dated and loses its impact.

Rule 4: Flatter Your Features with the Right Neckline
Consider your jawline when selecting necklines. Angular necklines like V-necks or square necklines flatter rounder faces, while round necklines complement square faces. Let your features guide your neckline choices for a flattering look every time.

Rule 5: Choose Silhouettes that Balance Your Body
Whether you have curves or a straighter figure, choose silhouettes that balance your body shape. Straight lines work wonders for curves, while curved lines add movement and shape to straighter figures.

Rule 6: Choose Straps That Suit Your Shoulders
Narrow shoulders call for delicate straps, while broader shoulders can handle wider straps with ease. Keep proportions in mind to ensure a flattering fit and effortless style.

Rule 7: Pick the Right Neckline For Your Bust
The right neckline can enhance or minimize your bust size. Choose angular necklines to downplay a fuller bust and round necklines to accentuate a smaller bust for a balanced look.

Rule 8: Pay Attention to Neckline Placement
Ensure your neckline hits just right—close to the base of your neck—to flatter your features and create a polished appearance. Proper neckline placement is key to a well-proportioned outfit.

Rule 9: Mix Flowy and Fitted Elements with Intention
Pair flowy pieces with structured items for a harmonious balance. Flowy dresses or tops shine when complemented by structured jackets or pants, while structured outfits welcome the addition of flowy completer pieces.

Rule 10: Take New Styles for a Test Drive
Experimenting with a new style can feel daunting at first. Take the pressure off by wearing the new piece around the house or during low-key outings to give yourself time to adjust and determine if it’s a fit for your personal style.
