The Top Trends of 2024 (& A Few Questionable Ones)

January 7, 2024 By: Nada Manley2 Comments

This isn’t a trends to wear to the grocery store kind of trend report. I’m not focusing on wearable or practical or versatile or any of the other catchphrases we use when building our wardrobes. This take on trends is pure fashion and pure fun. Later, when we see which of these actually stick around and make it into the stores, then we can dive a little deeper into what works, what doesn’t, and what the true standouts of the season are.

In the meantime, however, we get to ooh and ahh and occasionally eek and ach over some of the fabulous (and outrageous) runway looks for 2024.

Here, some of the main trend “themes” of this year. Which is your favorite?

Girlcore is all about romantic flourishes. Rosettes are a big theme this year
Bows continue to be trendy.
The rose motif of 2024 is best exemplified in this Alexander McQueen dress
Sequins are a key trend, and shown casually here at J. Crew
Preppy motifs are back
The clean all-American preppy aesthetic
90s style a la Caroline Bessette is back in the form of eclectic essentials
Upgraded basics are a key theme this year
Crisp pieces like this are an elegant choice
Tailoring is a key theme
High waisted pants continue to be popular
80s glam is having another moment

Metallics are a major theme, including the return of gold

Accessory Trends

From massive bags to tiny heels, the accessory trends this season are surprisingly practical.

MASSIVE bags showed up on many runways
Kitten heels continue in popularity
Flats are trending this year as well

And a Few Trends to (Consider) Skipping

Short shorts that are like underwear
These women forgot their pants
Sheer skirts
Leggings for more than athleisure
Capris, but not like these…
But more like pedal pushers and really tight

Which of these trends are you excited about? And which has you shaking your head? Let’s discuss in the comments!

The only real difference is the length. The pedal pushers are right below the knee. The capris are mid-calf. I don’t love either. LOL

Sorry what is the difference between the capris and the pedal pushers at the end? They both look tight & mid-rise to my eye.
