It’s very easy to ignore the things that people don’t see. Out of sight, out of mind, right? But then you catch a glimpse of yourself in the background of someone else’s photo and maybe you don’t love what you see. Before you kick that outfit to the curb, consider switching out your underwear instead.
No matter how flattering an outfit is, it’s not going to look its best if the foundation is all wrong. (Do you remember when department stores called the lingerie section “Foundations”?). A saggy bra and droopy drawers are not going to make any outfit look its best, so make sure that your bras and underwear are in good shape and still do what they are designed to do: lift, support, and flatter, without calling attention to themselves.
In today’s video, I talk about the 10 ways you can tweak your foundations to make everything you wear look more flattering and more stylish.

And now, for the 10 ways you’re wearing underwear wrong.
1. Not Wearing a Flattering Bra
A bra is designed to enhance your outfit and make everything look better, so if yours isn’t doing that, it’s time for an upgrade. Here are a few types of bras that can help enhance your shape and improve your outfits:
- A Posture Bra: This type of bra can help improve your posture, so that your clothes look and feel better.
- A Minimizing Bra: These bras can offer support and coverage, and even make you appear slimmer.
- A Maximizing Bra: These bras can amplify your bust and enhance a feminine shape.
- A Back Fat Smoothing Bra: Creates a smooth line under fitted items.
- A Plunge Bra: Won’t peek out with plunging necklines.
2. Not Getting an Annual Bra Fitting
After 40, and certainly after 50, I believe we should move from a bra fitting every other year and make it an annual appointment. Weight fluctuations, hormones, and the realities of aging can all cause our bra size to vary, so make sure you’re wearing the right size bra with an annual fitting. If you don’t have a place in town, many websites do virtual bra fittings. You can find my top resources here.
3. Not Wearing Everyday Shapewear
I’m not talking about double-Spanxing it on a Tuesday afternoon. Instead, choose smoothing underwear that creates a nice clean silhouette under your clothes. COMFORTABLE everyday smoothing underwear is a game-changer.
Not Paying Attention to Body Type
The shape of your body will naturally affect how your underwear fits. For example, if you have a curvy lower half, hipsters and briefs may show through clothes because of your curves. Consider a boyshort or thong style instead.
Not Wearing Seamless Underwear
If you can only pick one style of underwear, make it a seamless style, so you don’t have to switch underwear when you switch outfits. The newest versions create a nice sleek line under clothes and they are also super comfortable.
Not Wearing a Shaping Cami
A smoothing, shaping cami can be a game changer under fitted tops and sweaters, adding light hold and also creating a flattering and modest opaque look. You can find some of my faves here.
Not Owning An Elegant Matched Set
There’s nothing more feminine than a flattering matched bra-and-panty set. Whether anyone sees it or not, you deserve to have a set like this in your lingerie drawer. You can find some of my favorite options here.
Not Wearing The Right Rise
The rise of your underwear should match the rise of your pants. There is nothing worse than a thong or other underwear peeking out over the top of jeans, no matter what the trends say. The only exception to this? When you’re wearing high-rise shapewear that hits well above your waistline. Just make sure it doesn’t peek out.
Not Owning a Good Strapless Bra
A strapless bra may be an occasional item for you or a regular one, but every woman needs a bra that can work under a variety of clothes, especially during the holidays. Even if you never wear a strapless dress, consider this style so that you can skip worrying about straps with some of the new square necklines and halter styles. A longline strapless bra offers great support for fuller busts.
Not Considering Bust Tape
Bust tape is an innovative solution when you need support but are dealing with a fussy or strappy top. It is fully customizable, flattering, and adjustable. Busties bust tape kit is specially designed for big busts and gives the support and coverage you need to wear any outfit.
Which of these tips will you try? And which are you doing already? I’d love to hear in the comments!
