5 Coats Every Woman Needs

They’re often the only part of your outfit that people see, so make them count. Not only should your coats be cozy (of course) but they can (and should!) also be chic! I think coats are the most potentially elegant and iconic items in a woman’s wardrobe, and honestly wish I had more of an opportunity to wear them (but I don’t want to move anywhere cold!). There’s such a drama and a mystery to a great coat.

The Trench Coat

Elegant and versatile, the trench serves as protection from cool, wet weather and looks super chic in the process. It’s also one of the only coats on this list that can truly serve as the completer piece in a wide variety of outfits. And with its iconic style, it is one of the truly timeless pieces in your wardrobe. Mine is from Anthropologie and I’ve had it (and loved it!) for years, but if I were to buy another one, it would be one of these.

The Faux Fur or Shearling Coat

A cozy faux fur or shearling adds a touch of glamour to your winter wardrobe, as well as lots of cozy warmth. If you have a neutral wardrobe, consider a faux fur in a statement shade, or keep it neutral for maximum versatility. Most of these styles make no attempt at looking natural, but there are brands (like Donna Salyers) that make faux coats that look like the real thing.

The Puffer Coat

Sure, it can look like you’re wearing a comforter, but this practical style is unbeatable for insulation. Plus, there are some really cute styles. The details are going to vary according to your needs, from long and extra snug to short and lightweight, but there’s a style for every woman.

The Wool or Cashmere Coat

This is your classic dress coat, and an investment item you can expect to have in your wardrobe for years. Choose a simple style in the best quality you can afford. It adds instant polish to any ensemble. From the luxurious high-end versions made by brands like Loro Piana and MaxMara to the dozens of versions every year from “mall” stores like J. Crew and Ann Taylor, there is an option for every budget. These are also a wonderful item to pick up secondhand or vintage.

There’s a fine line between need and want here, and while a statement coat might not be a necessity, it’s an instant outfit and mood booster on cold dreary days, and a really fun and simple way to express your personal style.
