There are so many terms and conditions when we go to buy jeans that it’s a wonder anyone every finds a pair. That’s why, if you find a style that fits, you stick with it. Sometimes for too long.
I have definitely been there. But like everything else in life, fashion is cyclical, and styles change. The “Mom” jean, which rocked my world and made me think I was in a bad dream when it first came out, now looks ho-hum. Our eye adjusts. How else do we explain 80s hair?
Today, I am sharing the top denim trends in stores right now, and share some styles that might work for different body types.
My short take on flattery? If you don’t have shape, add some. If you do have shape, keep it simple.
For more on this and more to do with shopping for denim in 2023, read on.

The Trouser Leg Jeans
These jeans are kind of like pants, but in denim. They often feature back welt pockets, patch pockets in the front, a built-in belt, and even pleats, and can be made of a softer and drapier fabric.
Best For: All body types, but especially Blue, Purple, Yellow

The Wide Leg Jean
The wide-leg jean is another style that is almost universally flattering. If you are petite, find a pair that is scaled to you (all of the major brands have one) and it will make your legs look longer, not shorter.
Best For: All body types, but especially Blue, Purple, Yellow

The Baggy Jean
Baggy jeans are largely unflattering and hard to wear, but they are an option for those of you looking for a cool-girl look.
Best For: Blue, Purple

The Straight Leg Jean
A straight leg jean is one of the most classic styles, and is most flattering on women with a curvy lower half, like Orange and Green body types.
Best For: Orange, Green

The Cargo Jeans
Another tricky trend, this a fun but trendy-forward piece that probably won’t be around forever. This is going to be most stylish on women without a lot of shape in their lower half.
Best For: Blue, Purple

The Bootcut or Flare
This classic silhouette is back in a big way, and can definitely show off the curves of an hourglass body type.
Best For: Red, Yellow, Blue, Purple

The Denim Jacket
It’s not just about the traditional denim “trucker” jacket anymore, although those haven’t gone anywhere. Some styles this season are cropped or long, and some have shearling or leather trim, but they’ve been joined by denim blazers, bombers, and vests.

The Denim Skirt
While denim maxis with massive slits are definitely trendy, I think a sleek denim A-line at a knee or slightly longer length is a much better bet.

What do you think of these denim trends? And which could work for your body type and wardrobe? Let’s discuss this in the comments.

Thanks Carolyn! That means a lot to me! I really appreciate it! So the body type system can be found in my free series. You can find it here. https://nadamanley.com/bodytype But roughly speaking Orange and Green are variations on a “pear” body type, Yellow and Blue are straight body types, and Red and Purple are hourglass body types (proportional shoulders and hips with defined waist). I understand the search for jeans can be hard. I would start with Searchbyinseam.com and see if any of your old favorites show up there, and they will give you other options. I would also consider the straight leg styles from Madewell, J. Crew, and Boden. I feel like your best bet would be to go to Nordstrom.com or Amazon Try Before You Buy, order a few pairs, and try them on at home. They have free shipping and free returns and it just makes it easy for things like jeans, pants, and bathing suits. I hope that helped! I also have some clients who find Lee jeans and Levi’s jeans to be the best fit for them. Good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi Nada, I’m glad to see A-line skirts and vests in denim are doing well this season as I have both. I find shopping for jeans very difficult because it seems to me no two companies size jeans alike. I could order Paul Harris Denim jeans online for years, but cannot find that company now. It’s a good thing I saved some pairs that became too small, for I can wear them now since I’ve lost some weight. I live in jeans during the winter in Delaware, but need new jeans. Mine are definitely wearing out. Please help me understand your color labels for body types. I’m not petite at all. I’m 76, was 5’ 9” , weigh roughly 155#, and can still wear straight leg or slightly flared PHDCjeans that I bought in size 12 in 2004. I don’t have a clothing budget for expensive jeans because I’ll wear them every day except Sunday. I cannot wear low rise jeans or pants that have a dropped waist. Do mommy jeans have a natural waist? Thank you so much! PS I really liked your post on Sunday. I like a lot of your posts and have learned a lot from you. I never thought much about fashion until I started reading your emails. Thanks Carolyn
