Is it just me, or does spring fever make you feel like shopping? And why doesn’t anybody say spring fever anymore, except for me? And is it an actual law that we must all buy strappy sandals the moment the weather turns warmer or did I just make that up? Anyway, I am clearly inspired by spring and all the pretty spring clothes.
Except for some of the bad ones in this post. They’re here for a reason.
You see my goal is to help you pick the best items to bring into your wardrobe. I want you to feel stylish and confident. And to do that, you’re going to have to make the right choices when you’re shopping for spring (or any season). And, even more importantly, skip the wrong ones.
Here, my guide to the best (and WORST!) finds from some popular stores.
But first, a word of caution.
Now that we got that out of the way, let’s move on.
The Statement Jacket
If you’re going to make a statement, make it a modern one. Dated statement jackets, with awkward silhouettes and out-of-style prints, will drag down any outfit.
The overly flowy fit and dated patterns make these a pass.
Whether or not these suit your style, these are modern cuts with contemporary prints.
Just say no to prim, fitted cardigans with classic patterns. Instead, go for simple solid styles that are a little looser and more relaxed.
Fitted, with a high round neck and a too-sweet print. Comes with a matching shell for additional aging.
Relaxed and modern.
Go big or go home does not apply here. If you wear shorts (and I know many women don’t), consider going looser and a bit shorter. Long and fitted shorts can look unflattering.
These are not bad, but there are definitely cuter options.
These are a lot cuter. Look for a slightly shorter and looser style for more flattery.
The Cold Shoulder Top
I know. No one is more surprised than I am that this made the list. They’re back, but before you dig yours out, let me add that they’re totally different.
These are the ones I’ve been warning you about.
These are the new cold shoulders. Many of these come with thin straps at the shoulder or a one-shoulder silhouette. Slouchy cold-shoulder sweaters are also a thing.
Capris & Crops
I’ve written sonnets about my disdain for the unflattering capri, and these pics will tell you why.
Why do they still make these?
There. That’s better.
Keep it simple and you can’t go wrong. Even though embellished denim is a trend, proceed with caution.
These are deadly to your style.
The simpler, the better.
The Statement Blouse
Just like the statement jacket, only more so, because there seem to be so many of these out there.
These make a good statement, and are much more flattering.
This category is one that I’d like to skip over entirely, but since we need something to wear with leggings. I share the worst and best options for you here.
The prints, silhouettes, and fabrics make these a bad idea.
If you need a tunic, keep it simple.
The Statement Necklace
They’re back, but completely different. (Isn’t that the way it always is?)
These are not cute.
These are much more stylish.
Stay away from very classic styles in sweet prints and go for something more modern.
Just say no to floral patterns just at the hemline.
These are much more modern options.
These are generally not recommended, but sets are trending and there are some cute options. Approach with caution.
This has so much going on and looks dated.
This is a much more modern option.
Drapey waterfall style cardigans, jackets and vests have been out of style for a long time. Stick with simple straight styles instead.
This look is so dated and also adds bulk to the front.
Straight and simple is more modern and stylish.
Keep these simple and choose flattering shapes.
Just say no to these.
These are flattering and modern.
