For the longest time, I associated denim skirts with college, when I wore my Guess denim mini with my sorority jerseys, on repeat, because a skirt in denim material is girlier than the pants… This outfit was usually accessorized with Keds or my ubiquitous Sam & Libby ballet flats. (Yes, the Sam, before he went solo and became Sam Edelman). That’s how old I am. And when I recently visited my sister’s niece on the same campus, we had this conversation:
“There was no Starbucks when I was at Stetson.”
She, incredulous: “No Starbucks on campus???”
Me: No. No Starbucks, period.
That stung a little, I’m not gonna lie. All of this to say that I wasn’t born yesterday, so the denim skirt has cropped up a couple of times in the history of my wardrobe. Rediscovering it is like being reunited with an old friend. And this time, that friend is a lot more stylish. Whether you opt for a straight or pencil style classic or the button-front A-line style that’s everywhere, it’s as versatile as your favorite jeans but, you know, girlier.
Here, some cute ways to wear one:
The Best Denim Skirts for Every Budget
There are a few considerations when choosing a denim skirt, but as always with denim, a darkest wash is more versatile if you plan to dress it up for business casual as well as down on the weekend. If you have a SD2 body type, choose an A-line or straight skirt, or opt for a pencil skirt if you’re a Style Dial 1. Most retailers have a denim skirt or two, but a hot new line called Good American (available at Nordstrom) is especially designed for a SD2 body, and claims to prevent that waist gap at the back of your skirts/jeans that happens when your hips are curvy and your waist is defined.
I hope these ideas inspire you to mix it up with your denim skirt, or to pick one up on sale if you don’t own one already!
