I love makeup. I just don’t love it enough to spend an hour applying it, so if you’re looking for an elaborate tutorial on contouring, this may not be the post for you. Instead, I focus here on what I focus on when doing my own makeup: quick, fresh and pretty makeup ideas for real life. Most of these tips don’t require complicated techniques or special tools (although there are some tempting ones to check out). They just require a little time and the willingness to experiment. Here, 5 trends that will help you break out of a makeup rut this spring.
Bold Lips
Classic red, bright pink and sunny orange lips were all over the runways this season, and it’s a trend that is almost universally flattering, if you choose the right color. If you’re too shy to go bold, try a lipstain instead, or apply a bold color and blot some off for the same effect. Lipstains deliver the color without the intensity. In addition to bold lips, deep, dramatic hues were a surprising trend for spring, and look fresh when paired with the season’s ultrafeminine tops and pastel shades. A couple of fun new twists on the trend also turned up, including the ombre lip (fun, but hard to pull off without expert help) and the two-toned lip. To pull this off, pick two colors that are equal in intensity, such as a bright red and a hot pink, and apply a different shade to each lip. It’s only noticeable up close, but it’s a fun party or date night look if you’re adventurous enough to try it.
2. Seafoam Eyes
This soft, pretty shade is super easy to wear and flattering on almost everyone. Simply select a soft green shade in your favorite shadow brand, and brush or smudge it all over your lids. No special technique required. I love Mermaid, the pretty ocean-inspired shade from Deck of Scarlet’s latest palette.

3. Draping
Marc Jacobs Beauty seems to be the brand responsible for launching this trend, and now it’s everywhere. Basically, draping is contouring with blush instead of a darker brown contouring powder. You take your regular blush and apply it high up on the cheekbones, then along the temples and up above your brows. Add a little to the tip of the chin and bridge of the nose to tie the look together. I’m a big believer in blush and it’s ability to revitalize and make you look rested, so I love this trend. It’s much easier to pull off then a darker, flat contouring powder, which can be aging if used incorrectly. Intrigued? Check out this tutorial from Marc Jacobs Beauty.
4. No Makeup Makeup
This is one of those trends that can go wrong very easily. You set out to look dewy and fresh and natural and end up looking like you just finished a sweaty workout and forgot to freshen up. Fortunately, there is a way to do as the pros do, and pull of the “no makeup” look with makeup. When done properly, it looks soft, subtle and natural, but not bare. Natural, minimal coverage allows skin texture to show through, while lightly stained cheeks and lips and groomed brows complete this look.
Makeup can quickly get dated and boring, so if you’re stuck in a rut, I hope this post has inspired you to try a new shade, a new line or a whole new technique.
