I know I seem extremely, entirely too young to have gray hair, but sadly, that’s not true. Prematurely gray hair runs on my mother’s side of the family, and I first spotted a few pesky white hairs at the age of 29. A year later, just before my wedding, I walked into Oscar Blandi in New York and enlisted a colorist to cover my gray for the ceremony, and I’ve been coloring it ever since.
I don’t know about you, but there is a long list of things that make me gray:
Deadlines
My kids
Other people’s kids
Stress
News
Elections
Terrorism
Scary or sad movies
Sad animal stories
Orphans
Wow, that was depressing. If the world were a little less stressful, I’m certain my hair would still be completely brown.
Coloring my hair is neither glamorous nor fun. It’s mandatory maintenance, as essential as bathing and brushing my teeth, but far more challenging. My hair is a colorist’s worst nightmare. It’s long, dark, very thick and very curly – and my standing appointment for color every 8 weeks isn’t nearly often enough, but I literally couldn’t squeeze in another appointment if I tried. As it is, I always arrive for the first appointment of the day, breathless and a little disheveled and long overdue, a clip holding my hair back to disguise the grays.
In between appointments, I am often forced to take matters into my own hands, using my handy-dandy soon-to-be-patented car beauty emergency kit.
Sometimes, I use this:
Other times, I use this:
In desperation, I have even tried this. (Messy, messy, messy! Great for eyes, though.)
And now, finally, I’ve discovered this:
There are so many things I love about this stuff:
It takes 10 seconds to spray away gray, and I don’t need to comb it through. (Have you seen my hair? Combing it while dry is impossible!).
It’s feel soft, not stiff, and moisturizes your hair.
It has this applicator that makes it easy to aim the color just where you need it.
It’s only about $10, and you can buy it everywhere: Walgreens, WalMart, Ulta, CVS. But the easiest place to buy it? Online, because through August 30, you can go to GrayAway.com and use code FREESHIP to try some for yourself.
Oh, and it matches my color exactly. Don’t know how it does that! It might even buy me another week or two between appointments.
