Spring means shopping. Look it up. In some states, it is the law. And for me, March equals spring. Never mind the blustery winds whipping outside your window. Just flip open your laptop and shop soft, summery colors, striking swimsuits and sassy sandals (I promise this alliteration was accidental!) all without leaving your cozy couch. What better way to shake off the winter doldrums than with a cute new purchase? Or 12. Last week, I was picking up some pre-cruise sunscreen and other necessities at Target, when some adorable spring items leapt into my cart. Totally took me by surprise. Gauzy kimonos, lacy shorts and even an adorable coverup with pom pom trim. Naturally, I had to take them home.
If there is one thing you need to know about me, it’s that I adore pom pom trim. And I adore people who adore pom pom trim. If it is cold, and windy, and snowy, you need some pom pom trim in your life. And dreamy spring colors with names likes Strawberry Ice, Scuba Blue, Tangerine and Custard. Don’t the names just make you happy? Trust me on this. Spring shopping is good for the soul.
So, without further delay, and to kick off spring fashion week, here is my completely biased take on the 5 spring trends under $100 to buy and wear now, and all spring and summer long.
(As always, click on the picture and it takes you straight to the site where you can buy it. Dangerously easy.)
5 Spring Trends to Buy (and Wear) Now
1. Kimono
There are some trends that I wish would never go away. This is one of them. It’s like an airy, girly version of a cardigan. I bought a couple at Target and wore them constantly on our unseasonably cool weekend cruise. They look adorable with a tank and jeans, a dress, shorts and, of course, over a bathing suit. Coverage that doesn’t look like your covering up. What could be better? Since it is, sadly, just a trend, this isn’t the place to spend a lot of money. Look for a pretty print in colors that you love, and keep the fringe and other details to a minimum. Except for pom pom trim. There’s never a bad time for pom pom trim.
2. Striped Tee
If you have been taking my shopping advice literally (and I highly recommend that you do), you already own one of these. If not, what are you waiting for. They aren’t going away. The key, though, is to find the right one. A classic in just the right stripe with just the right fit – not too loose, not too snug. This one, from Amazon, is perfect. Wear it now with jeans and under jackets, and later, with shorts, a full floral skirt, or over a bathing suit.
3. Floral Dress
What is spring without a dress, and this season, it’s all about a short(ish) frock in a bold floral. Go bold or don’t bother. After all, isn’t there enough wishy-washiness in life? Take a stand firmly on the site of feminine florals and wear them now, with a jacket and tights, and later, with strappy sandals.
4. Ankle Pants
Unless you live in Florida, like me, shorts are probably still out of the question. And cropped pants are dicey and a little hard to pull off, unless you’re tall and long-legged. But ankle pants are chic and universally flattering, and so versatile. If you don’t already own a black pant in a neutral, now is the time to pick one up. You’ll love how they go with flats and heels and instantly work with everything in your closet. If your neutral bases are already covered, go for a pair in a pretty spring hue.
5. Denim Pencil Skirt
This is the skirt you didn’t know you desperately needed, but you do. You really, really do. It would be so cute with your striped tee or any tee and it’s just so cool and at the same understated and versatile. You can wear it now with a button down or a long sleeved tee and a jacket, and then throw it one with a tank and sandals for the summer. And you will look adorable every time. Look for a style in a medium to dark wash for maximum versatility, and a front slit for movement and flattery.
I am not saying that a pretty new dress will make the winter doldrums go away. Actually, that’s exactly what I’m saying. Pretty just feels good, and who doesn’t need that on a gray day? Fortunately, none of these items are over $100, so you can afford to indulge a little. Which is your favorite?

I’ve been looking for that exact striped tee! Just ordered in two colors. Thanks for the link!
