I am so inspired by Caitlin Skidmore of Greater Than Rubies, and I know you will be, too. In 2012, she was so moved by the poverty she sees every day in her job as the coordinator of a poverty assistance program in North Central Texas that she gave up shopping. For a whole year. Twelve months without a single clothing purchase. What’s more, her style didn’t suffer for it. In fact, she looked cuter than ever. She found chic new ways to wear what she already owned, and has inspired other women to do the same. Here, her everyday style secrets – no shopping trip required.
What is your secret to getting dressed on a busy morning?
I’ve curated my closet down to items that fit well and work for my lifestyle. At the beginning of every season, I pick 20 items and try to create 30 unique outfits with them. It helps me think outside of the box and reminds me to buy items that mix and match with what I already have. Doing this work on the front end lets me get dressed in about 5 minutes each morning and look put together. I’m not a mom yet, but I’m already thinking about how pieces I purchase will work when I am one! I’ve learned from friends to invest in pieces that are easy to wash and wear, that patterns hide stains, and that it’s worth it to buy a pair of jeans that fits perfectly, because you wear them a lot.
What are your favorite shops/brands?
I love to thrift and shop consignment pieces and mix them with J. Crew Factory, Loft, and Target finds. My favorite store is The Clothes Mentor, which is a consignment store.
Name 5 things you can’t live without. Any style secrets?
Style-wise, a bra that fits, a super-soft tee, a dark wash jean, a cardigan, and a statement necklace.
Do you wear makeup every day?
Yes, I do. I’m not super loyal, but I tend to stick to CoverGirl and Maybelline. I’m waiting for my shade to be available in the MaskCara HAC Pack because the before and after makeovers look phenomenal. If I look half that good, it’ll be my new go-to.
Where do you look for fashion inspiration?
I love to browse Pinterest. My favorite bloggers to follow for everyday style are Audrey of Putting Me Together and Merrick from Merrick’s Art. They combine real life style in unique, wearable outfits.
Describe your signature style?
My style is very classic for the most part. I stick to basics that fit really well and add trends with jewelry or less expensive items, like a pair of patterned shorts. I don’t think I have a signature style, but I always try to wear three items: top, bottom, and some sort of completer piece, whether that’s a blazer, cardigan, or a bold piece of jewelry. Three pieces make your look more cohesive than just two.
What is one thing you do every day to pamper yourself?
To pamper myself, I get up before the rest of the house is awake, make a cup of coffee and have my quiet time. It always gets the day off on the right foot.
If you could only apply one makeup item, what would it be?
Eyeliner. I love wearing a subtle cat eye because it makes my eyes pop.
Favorite denim brand?
Is it un-American of me to say I don’t have one? Even though finding jeans is really tough for me, I’ve scored my favorite pairs from a local consignment store: Joe’s, RUBlue, and a pair of Lauren Conrad’s are the top three.
Color, neutrals, or both?
Both! And a little pattern and shine in, too, for great visual interest.
Name the one signature accessory you are never seen without.
My wedding ring. Troy designed it for me, and I love the detailing. It always makes me feel put together.
I love how Caitlin’s style secrets reflect her values! Her fashion and beauty advice is so accessible – I love gems like these:
- 1. Pattern and shine add interest to a wardrobe of classics.
- 2. Great style is the result of a well-edited wardrobe, not a large one.
- 3. Thrift and consignment stores can be great sources for stylish finds!
