Storm-Worthy Style
Okay, I know most people wouldn’t call this weather bad, and it’s not, exactly. Except that for days it’s been misty, which makes good hair days, especially with fluffy hair like mine, a near impossibility. And then there are the gray skies and the breezy 50-degree temps. This weather might be fine for other places, but I live in Florida, and this kind of weather is against the law. When the temperature dips below 70, thin-skinned types like moi dust off the coats and mittens and bundle up against the frigid Florida weather. And I hear, from friends farther north, that some places get even colder.
I shudder at the thought.
But bad weather does not necessarily need to mean bad style. Sure, it’s a challenge, but we are moms after all, and we’re not going to let a little rain or snow stop us from looking fab – and frostbite free. Let’s start with the single item that has the most impact, the coat. Sure, the season is nearing the end, but that means sales are right around the corner. š
One lesson I learned from a few icy winters in Chicago and Boston is that, most days, most people will only see your coat. I often spent hours in Water Tower Place or the Prudential Mall (yes, this was pre-kids) without removing my coat, because then I would have to hold it. What a nuisance! So it’s important that your outerwear be outstanding. My red wool Marc Jacobs coat has become my cool-weather signature, and often, a disguise for the cozy-yet-casual clothes I’m wearing underneath. Here, a few of the most captivating coats I’ve seen.
Mackage Down Coat with Adali Lavish Fur Trim Hood, $650, Bloomingdale’s: Coral turns cozy in this chic parka.
Alice & Olivia Campbell fox fur collar coat, about $250, aliceandolivia.com: Nothing beats the winter blues like a dose of red. This coat is a quarter of its original price and only in small, so if the coat fits…
Via Spiga Faux Leather Trim Walker Coat, $135, Macy’s: White makes a bold statement in the winter, and this leather-trimmed coat is on-trend and ultra-affordable.
Valentino RED Wool-Cotton Coat, $878, StyleBop.com: A swingy A-line style is superfeminine and classic, and although it’s expensive, this is a style you will have for years, until your daughter steals it from you.
Club Monaco “Lane” coat, $389, ClubMonaco.com: Chic, urban style in this colorblocked coat that will upgrade everything you wear it with.
Tommy Hilfiger trench, $91, Amazon.com: A trench is a timeless, rainy-day essential, and this one offers classic style at an unbeatable price.
Jenni Kayne light wool coat, $225, ShopBop.com: This is the fashion insider’s coat – hip and fashion-forward without being over-the-top.
London Fog “Heritage” Trench Coat, $106.80, Nordstrom:Ā Classic style in an upbeat color, this will brighten your outfit, and your day!
Trina Turk Belted Wrap Coat, $365, Nordstrom: A camel coat is an iconic wardrobe piece, and this one checks all the right boxes.
Kristen Blake Two-Tone Wool Blend Coat, $113.98: Cool colorblocking and a shorter length modernize this classic style.
Tomorrow, chic shoes for rain and snow. I promise!
