I always try to look on the bright side. Sure, for most of 2014 the rain in Florida was torrential and monsoonish and for days my hair was in a bun so tight that it resulted in a mini-facelift (see – bright side!) and this went on for infinity and beyond unless you count that one day when the sun came out but my hair still looked bad from the night before. But mostly, the bright side.
At least it didn’t snow.
Still, I know that it is snowing/has snowed on some friends in unsnowy-parts of the country, like North Carolina and Georgia. And I feel for them. The weather has been bitterly cold and subzero and just plain miserable. But at least there wasn’t frizz-inducing rain. (Bright side, again).
My theory is that bleak days call for bright-side clothing -clothing that makes us feel happy just to look at it. And if it’s weatherproof, then all the better. Sadly, if you Google waterproof or weatherproof, you get page after page of sober black jackets and clunky boots and something alarming known as a snowbib. (I would explain the term “snowbib,” but my eyes are still recovering from the sight.) So let’s just move on, shall we. Fortunately, through diligent research and hours of shopping (yes, I do love you!) I’ve managed to find some ways for you to stay dry and look darling, all at the same time. Here, 5 of the most wonderful weatherproof accessories I’ve found:
Melissa Shoes, $75 and up: Chic jellies. I kid you not. Melissa has collaborated with really, really big deal people like Karl Lagerfeld, Vivienne Westwood, and Jason Wu on higher-end styles (hovering in the quite-sensible mid-$100’s) and has lower-priced lines as well, including one for Urban Outfitters. All are girly, glam and a little bit cheeky. And weatherproof. Love. The platform sandal shown, $124, is perfect for summer, but you’ll find everything from ballets to boots. (And if Melissa’s not your thing, look for rubber ballets from RED Valentino, Marc Jacobs, Ilse Jacobsen and Tory Burch!). These are the shoes your inner Barbie wants to wear.
Furla Candy Rubber Satchel, $378: Not all status bags are made out of leather. This superstylish satchel from Furla is waterproof, witty and animal-friendly. And it’s roomy enough to hold lots of stuff!
Valentino Lace Rain Boots, $295: I adore classic wellies, especially the hip, glossy, color-saturated styles from Hunter, but other options tempt me, from Tory Burch’s classic hunting boots to Kate Spade’s bow-bedecked style. I adore Bottega Veneta’s woven version, Gucci’s sleek wine-colored style, Burberry’s studded version, and Le Chameau’s platform, all in rain-friendly rubber. But my favorite has to be the ultrafemme lace-printed style from Valentino. Pitter patter.
Ted Baker “Hariette” patent leather pump, $185: Rubber isn’t the only weatherproof material. Patent is perfect for rainy days, and this style from Ted Baker will make everything you wear it with so much prettier. Love!
Kate Spade Black Stripe Bubble Umbrella, $38: You can’t face a rainy day without an umbrella. Unless you’re me, and it’s buried under piles of stuff in your car even though it is huge and adorned with fluffy red roses, or in the trunk, or inexplicably left behind at home. Bubble umbrellas are not only chic and retro, they are also practical, and this one from Kate Spade just makes me happy, which is reason enough to buy it. And while there is no hope the piles in my car will go away, I might be able to spot this pink handle peeking out from under them.
