The tank top is as essential as the T-shirt, but lighter, airier, and even more conducive to layering. Stock up on ribbed tank tops in every color when you find a great deal on them. They are great layering pieces under cardigans and jackets or worn on their own during the summer. J. Crew, the GAP, Loft, and Target all make great ribbed tank tops. For something with more fashion flair, you may want to go more upscale. As always, I’ve categorized these by body type, so if you don’t know yours, check out this handy graphic or click here for a professional body type and color analysis, by me.
And now, my picks for tank tops by body type:
Style Dial #1
This proportional body type looks best in a v-neck tank top or a style with vertical detail.
Style Dial #2
A Style Dial #2 body type has narrow shoulders and a curvy shape through the hips, bum, and thighs, so a style with a horizontal neckline (scoop, high neck, etc) and a straight hem is most flattering.
Style Dial #3
This straight body type, with proportional hips and shoulders (and sometimes, wider shoulders) and an undefined waist is really flattered by ruching, draping, and shirring, as well as vertical necklines. If your shoulders aren’t broad, a scoop neckline can also work. Interest at the hem adds shape to the hips and helps to further define the waist.
Pick the right tank, and you’ll find that this seasonless staple is in heavy rotation in your wardrobe. For more Capsule Wardrobe Essentials, check out my regularly updated Essentials Catalog with hand-picked item for every body type, budget, and lifestyle.
