Today, I’m excited to hear the perspective of a fellow stylist and mom on a subject that I am passionate about: everyday, wearable fashion for moms. Fawn’s philosophy and mine are similar: comfortable, casual, yet gorgeous style is achievable, and only requires a little bit of planning. “As moms, we want to look stylish but make it effortless and comfortable,” Fawn says. “You just have to put a little bit of thought on the forefront and plan it and then that wardrobe becomes second nature to you and then you are not fumbling for what you are going to wear. It makes getting ready a cinch!”
Isn’t that what we are all looking for? Fawn has developed an outfit formula—a go-to look—that makes getting dressed a breeze! Here, her 3 fashion essentials for stylish moms.
The Maxi Skirt
“For me the number one piece is the maxi skirt. It is all relevant to which part of the country you live in, because they come in a number of different cuts and fabrics. You can get fitted ones or flowy ones that fit your body shape and keep you comfortable in whatever climate. I would choose cute filmy ones in Florida with accordion pleats with a layer underneath. They always look pulled together and like you tried.” Fawn is a big fan of long skirts from Zara.
Fawn likes long skirts from Zara, similar to the one shown here:
My Take: I also love the style and ease and versatility of a maxi, and it does make more of a statement, perhaps, then the Beauty Mommy basic, the stretch jersey skirt, but since I am petite and have to have all maxis altered, I often go for a shorter version. Fawn is also a big fan of knit skirts: “Fabulous knit skirts that hit just above the knee, like the straight knit skirts from H&M, my toe-ring sandals, a necklace and earrings with a tee looks effortless and stylish and comfortable.”
The Black Dress
You may call it the LBD, but Fawn prefers to call it the CBD, the Comfortable Black Dress. “This dress is stylish and sassy but not sexy, and can take you from the schoolroom to date night. Modal or stretch lycra will be comfortable and look great for everything you do,” Fawn says.
My Take: I completely agree that a comfy, cute little black dress is essential – the more, the better. I have a wrap-style from James Perse, a couple of flowy ones from BCBG, and a cute new strappy one from Cynthia Rowley that I got at Marshall’s. I can put it on at 6:30 with ballet flats to take the girls to school, and then change into heels for a board meeting or a date with my husband that night. Here are a couple of favorites:
The Tank
“Tank tops are easy, comfortable and add color without having to understand color or having an eye for color. You don’t have to try too hard. Whether they are the skinny-strap camisole or wider strapped ribbed tanks, it’s cute to layer a couple in different colors with a maxi skirt, jeweled or metallic flats, and a long necklace. The look is beautiful, fashionable and hip,” Fawn says.
My take: I agree with Fawn! I adore tanks—they are an essential layering piece. I prefer ribbed tanks for the hip, casual edge that they lend the stuffiest bottoms in your closet. One of my favorite daytime looks is a tank worn with a super-feminine or slightly dressy skirt, a denim jacket and cute flats.
