Beauty and the Beach

August 3, 2012 By: Nada Manleycomment

Yesterday I blogged about bathing suits. Today, I wore one: my trusty Juicy gingham maillot, hidden beneath an H&M t-shirt dress. Still sleepy and silently cursing the sun, I sat and caught up with a good friend, similarly dressed in a striped cotton dress, while our kids played. I was so not swimsuit-ready. What I need is an update on my Juicy suit – something similarly flattering, forgiving, and easy to wear (even on lazy days). I think this new suit from giejo just might be it. I am a huge fan of the line’s mix and match pieces, but this one-piece is perfect for days when I need to slip something on and go! Find it and other chic styles at shopgiejo.com. A new suit will inspire me to try a new poolside ‘do. Wearing my thick, curly hair long and loose is not the coolest solution on sweltering days. Fortunately, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim 2013 offered lots of inspiration, many created by the hair gurus at Cutler South Beach. My favorite look? The easy, breezy ponytail. I also liked the wet look, but that would involve actually getting into the water…
Another poolside must? Great skin, Local favorite Hawaiian Tropic, the sun care sponsor for swim week, collaborated with swimsuit designer Mara Hoffman on the looks, and the great skin, for her show. (Below, a model applies Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration lotion sunscreen before walking the runway at Mara Hoffman 2013 Resort Swim Collection fashion show presented by Hawaiian Tropic Sun Care during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim on Saturday, July 21, in Miami.)

More fun from Swim Week: Mara Hoffman dishes on trends, skincare, and the beach!

And since stunning skin is the best beach accessory, ever, Hawaiian Tropic offers these tips:

#TIP 1: Protect your skin by applying a luxurious amount of sunscreen.
#TIP 2: Your face requires about a teaspoon of sunscreen for the best coverage, while your arms and legs require about a tablespoon. Adjust accordingly for the torso. For maximum protection, wait for it to soak in (15 to 30 minutes) before indulging in the sun.
#TIP 3: Reapply sunscreen often, at least every two hours. Sweating, swimming, and towel drying can remove sunscreen from your skin¹s surface, so be sure to reapply when needed.
#TIP 4: Drink up. Your body needs more water when you¹re outside in the glorious summer sun. Drinking water is also good for keeping your skin clear, supple and beautiful.
#TIP 5: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! The more you moisten your sun-drenched skin, the more long-lasting your tan and the more luminous your golden glow.
#TIP 6: Exfoliate to prep your skin:
– Before applying sunless tanning products, exfoliate all areas you are planning to cover. This will ensure your glow is as smooth and even as possible.
– Tanning occurs at the lower levels of your skin, where the skin¹s pigment cells are located. Exfoliating ³polishes² your skin and gives it a healthy glow. You¹ll improve the look of your tan by removing flaky surface skin cells that give your skin a dull appearance.
