Tonight, at the Junior League meeting, my friend Erin, whose closet I had the privilege of sifting through a few weeks ago, won the award for biggest donation to the thrift shop for the whole year. She turned to me and laughed, because a part of that donation was the result of our closet cleanup! Afterwards, we joked that about my tough tactics, and I promised I would try to be gentler in the future! But my friends Aimee and Michelle still insist they won’t let me near their closets. So, for those holdouts, here are three quick, easy ways to update your look using what you already have:
1. Break up all “sets”: This includes suits, two piece dresses, twin sets, etc. Wear these pieces as separates instead, and you’ll look fresher and more youthful.
2. Lose the self belt: I thank Yvonne for this one, since it’s her pet peeve. Replace those flimsy fabric belts that come with most of your dresses with a chic leather belt instead. If possible, use the belt to add a pop of color or some texture.
3. Be true to yourself: You know what’s you when you see it, and there’s no use pretending to be something that you’re not. If you’re preppy, like my dear friend Laura, embrace your preppiness and pick pieces that reflect who you are. If you’re conservative and like well-made basics, then stay with what feels natural to you. You can be yourself while still taking the occasional risk, mixing it up a little, and being careful not to get stuck in a rut!
The best way to break out of a rut – go shopping with your girlfriends! So here’s to our upcoming shopping trip!
